I feel quite strongly about this since I’m subjected to this garbage every so often by people who adore it. My criticisms:
-
The melody plods along lifelessly
-
Thom Yorke yawns through the whole song
-
The lyrics are either straight-up lazy (You’re just like an angel) or lazy attempts at weirdness (Your skin makes me cry)
-
This piece of shit song is way too widely renowned as romantic (instead of whiny)
-
Or as profound (instead of adolescent)
As far as songs centered around unrequited love, dissatisfaction, or some kind of emotional distance, here are my suggestions of better music choices for “Creep” fans corresponding to the above enumerated criticisms:
-
“Blush” by Mr. Twin Sister (soft and slow with an incredible arrangement and atmosphere)
-
“The Downtown Lights” by The Blue Nile (seriously strong vocal range from Paul Buchanan)
-
“Little Round Mirrors” by Harvey Danger (absolutely masterful pop songwriting)
-
“Bizarre Love Triangle” by New Order (wistful and sweet instead of thirsty and impotent)
-
“Aphasia” by Pinegrove (teenage angst has never sounded so meaningful)
