CT – neighbor questioned by police/arrested

r/

Location: Connecticut

I saw some police officers at my neigbor’s house and from what I heard, they were questioning them over a traffic violation which ended up in the neighbor getting arrested. There were talking about the incident and I was very tempted to shout at them “don’t talk to the police, get a lawyer!” but was afraid they would arrest me for interfering. Is this something I could have been arrested over? I assume they possibly could have detained me, but there may not be a case to be convicted over. I feel a bit guilty for not saying anything because not everyone knows to not talk to police and incriminate themselves.

This is not something that you could legally get arrested for. Doesn’t necessarily mean the cops won’t respond, just that your actions would not have been illegal.

If you had shouted that, a cop might arrest you for obstruction, but that would be extreme. Better to have shouted: “hey! Is it illegal for me to tell him to get a lawyer and not say anything to you?”
