My girlfriend and I got in a funny debate so I’m asking here – DAE bring their own toothpaste when traveling – hypothetical scenario would be you are staying at someone’s house you know. Do you pack your own toothpaste or do you assume/know you will be able to use theirs while you are there?
Comments
I have definitely read this post before cuz total deja what?
Yeah, good to have just in case and it won’t make a real weight difference.
Toothpaste is part of my dopp kit. So it just comes along when I pack up to travel.
Always. People often have a guest bathroom that is not normally stocked with toothpaste.
I bring all my own toiletries wherever I go.
Always bring my own. I have never shared mine.
If I’m staying a night at my best friend’s or at my mom’s, I’m not bringing it, otherwise yes. Also because I prefer my toothpaste over other flavours.
Great guests make few assumptions of their hosts.
I bring my own. I like a specific brand and flavor of toothpaste, so it goes where I go.
Not only do I bring my own tooth paste but I bring my own tooth brush, back brush, soap, mouthwash—everything I “think” I may need.
wait what i’ve never even heard of the option of using someone else’s toothpaste
Ofc. I can’t function without mine.
It depends on who I’m staying with – i have a few family members who have amazingly stocked guest bathrooms. I love staying with them and using all the bits and bobs they have out for guests!
If I don’t know for sure, i definitely pack my own and, if I’m going to a hotel, I always pack some.
of course I pack my own toothpaste… and dental floss
I travel for work so it’s always packed in my travel kit
I had no idea that anyone DOESN’T take their own toothpaste everywhere!
Pretty sure everyone brings their own toothpaste. I need SLS free so I’m not going to assume I will be using theirs. It’s kind of a weird thing to share outside of with your partner. Does your gf bring her own deodorant or just assume she will use theirs?
Always
I’m bringing toothpaste
I bring my own toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
Sure! I always bring all my own stuff like that. I don’t like going without my own stuff I like to use.
always forget… and just go to the location’s convienent stores buy
Yes, I always do. A few travel size tubes and I’m good for 6 weeks.
I always pack toothpaste.
I have Celiac. I carry my own everything everywhere. I love my silverware kit.
No way I’d be using someone else’s toothpaste.
>DAE bring their own toothpaste when traveling
Literally everyone packs their own toothpaste when they travel. Nobody assumes that if youre a guest in someone’s house, that youre going to use your host’s toothpaste, nobody.
Yes, always.
…im sorry is your girlfriend the redhead from the office??
“I don’t pack a toothbrush because there’s always one everywhere I go”
Don’t use other people’s toothbrushes lol of course I pack my own
I always pack my own toothpaste. Today I learned some people don’t. This was news to me.
You obviously don’t travel at all because hotels don’t usually supply tooth paste. Just soap, shampoo and cream rinse. If they do supply tooth past they also supply the toothbrush as well.
I bring all my bathroom stuff. I like the toothpaste I have. I use the cleanser and lotion etc because it works for me. Who knows what I will find in another house? I’ll borrow or share in a pinch, but otherwise I bring everything I use.
I had someone stat at my home and use my toothpaste and while I didnt say anything jt REALLY bothered me. Honestly I was more bothered by how they squeezed the tube like a heathen and LEFT IT than by the fact they borrowed it. But it seemed weird they’d use my toothpaste. I’d never assume someone was ok with me using their stuff unless they explicitly said I could.
I always pack my own toothpaste. Just the thought of my toothbrush touching another person’s used toothpaste lid is nasty to me
My husband I might share one or we might bring our own.
I always have toothpaste and anything else I may need (shampoo, etc) in my hygiene bag. If I know I’m staying overnight somewhere it’s with me.
I was a traveling consultant for six years, flying and living out of a suitcase about every week. We had a psychologist come and speak to us for a professional development session. She said road warriors should work to keep as many things the same as home as they could…soap, shampoo, lotions and yes, toothpaste. She said this reduced some of the stress of travel and would be comforting. I did it, and I do think it helped.
I take my own toothpaste whenever I stay somewhere else. I don’t like certain types and some toothpaste hurts my gums/lips so I always use my own.
Doesn’t everyone do that?
I pack my toothbrush and toothpaste everywhere I travel. I also bring my own shampoo, body wash, conditioner, etc. Im not having my hair and skin dried out while on vacay
Always.
I always bring my own toothpaste. I didn’t know this was something others didn’t do lol. If someone came to my house and asked to use toothpaste I’d get them a new tube out of the cabinet and tell them to keep it lol.
I always take my own toothpaste no matter who’s place I’m staying at
It’s just in my kit that I drop into my luggage, so it’s there whether I need it or not.
The same toothpaste that your host has touched to their toothbrush????
Always pack my own. The thought of using someone else’s toothpaste (aside from a romantic partner’s) is so gross.
OP, I must know which one of you thinks it’s acceptable to use someone else’s toothpaste?? And does the host know someone else is swiping their toothbrush on their tube of toothpaste?
I’ve never found toothpaste in a hotel bathroom as part of the kit, and I have never used another person’s toothpaste outside of at my parents’ house, so I absolutely bring my own tube whatever I’m traveling.
Yes. I wouldn’t want to burden whoever I’m visiting with asking for thier toothpaste. Maybe if I forgot or ran out. But thats on me
Even then, I’d go buy my own
If someone stays with me who forgot their toothpaste, I provide them with a mini travel toothpaste of their own that they can take with them.
No way I would use someone else’s toothpaste
Unless I asked ahead of time, I just bring my own. Like when I was still living with family, I might not because someone else was bringing some, & its just one extra thing to pack.
Some toothpastes also cause me to have an allergic reaction though, & I end up with contact dermatitis, so it’s normally best if I just bring my own that way I know I’m all good.
I bring my own, better to have and not need than to need and not have.
I try to always bring my own, but ive used other people’s when Ive forgotten it before
I don’t stay in other people’s homes when I travel. I stay in hotels, and toothpaste is not provided.
I pack my own toothpaste. Fun fact, my partner is severely allergic to mint so we buy fun flavored toothpaste from Australia. It’s surprisingly hard to find non-mint toothpaste in retail in America.
My toothpaste has to be stripy or I don’t like it, so I always pack my own to be sure!
Why on earth would I assume that I’m going to use someone else’s toothpaste?? Of course I bring my own toothpaste when traveling!!!! Would you use their comb instead of bringing your own? Yuk!
That’s gross. Using someone else’s toothpaste is like using their brush imo, always take your own!! Rude to assume otherwise.
Different with children staying over though, that’s probably the last thing they think to bring, toothpaste 😂 and I always have spares and mini ones for guests just incase
I pack my own. Everyone in my immediate family has their own toothpaste tubes. No sharing!
I’ve never seen someone NOT bring their toothpaste unless by accident
Yes, why would I share with a friend? Their tooth brush touches it, ew
We do. Why not?
Always brought mine own. When I go traveling, I have a shaving bag, that I put a travel size toothpaste and a toothbrush in, along with soap and mouthwash.
Pack my own. But one family kept new (wrapped) toothbrushes and toothpaste for guests
Depends whose home im staying at. If my Mum & Dad then no as it’s known I’m welcome to use theirs. Anywhere else inc brother or non immediate family then yes.
I bring my own stuff. The one time I asked a friend I was going to be staying with if I could use her hair dryer while I was there and she said of course. Well it turned out to be a big dramatic thing and never again will I consider not bringing my own stuff
I’m picky about toothpaste specifically because I prefer a certain toothpaste brand and flavor. I bring my own everything even when I’m staying with someone I know (toothpaste, floss, soap, shampoo/ hair products, deodorant, lotion). The only exception is if I’m going to my parents house, I know they always keep extras of a lot of stuff that is compatible with my routine.
lol. I read this as “toothbrush” instead of paste. I couldn’t believe someone was asking that!
Ewwwww! I would never use someone else’s toothpaste!
I pack my own everything.
Yes. Always.
Yes, of course. Sharing is nasty. I’ve never heard of anyone that did that.
I take my own. Too many allergies and really sensitive teeth. I most likely can’t use what was there even if it was offered.
Both my husband and I each pack a toothpaste just incase we lose one.
They sell travel sized toothpastes so you can bring them when you travel…
Why wouldn’t you?
I pack my own toothpaste. I’m picky about toothpaste.
So there’s someone in this world that thinks they’re gonna go to someone’s house and scrape their toothbrush. They stick in their mouth onto someone else’s toothpaste receptacle so that everybody’s sharing each other’s germs? No thanks. I just bring my own.
I keep a travel sized tube in my toiletry bag when I travel.
When I visit my brother, I share a bathroom with his 3 and 6 yeah old. I’m not interested in bubble gum toothpaste.
I take every single item I will need for my personal care, relying upon the host is crazy to me. They’re already hosting, not caring for my every need.
When actually traveling I would pack mine, if just staying the night at a friend’s or with family I would assume it would be no problem to use a squirt if I forgot mine.
I can’t imagine any host denying their guest a squirt of toothpaste, how selfishly petty that would be. Most hosts say “If you need anything at all please let me know” or “My house is your house”
I also would expect to be provided a guest towel, like I provide my guests and all my hosts have provided.
Depends. If it’s my parents’ or grandparents’ homes, I usually expect to be able to use their toothpaste. If it’s a friend, colleague, or third party accommodation, I absolutely bring my own. Either way, I always keep a travel tube in my travel toiletries bag, so it’s kind of a moot point.
This has never been a question for me as I always pack my own toothpaste. In fact, I prefer not to use others’ toothpaste because some people rub the bristles on the opening of the tube which I find gross, or it’ll have clumps of dried up toothpaste.
I mean, yes. Pretty much anywhere I travel I take my toothpaste. I like my brand and if I’m staying with friends I try and leech off them as little as possible.
No way. We pack our own toothpaste and shampoos
always. the flavoring in most toothpaste is a chemical that tastes vaguely of mint. some of us are allergic to it.
so i always bring my own.
I have to bring my own toothpaste. All others make me gag. They sell travel sized toothpaste for a reason you know.
Who doesn’t have a toiletries bag that just stays packed at all times so you can just throw it in a suitcase and go?
Yes, people should come prepared for as many eventualities as possible.
This definitely includes bringing your own toiletries.
Of course you bring your own along with the other toiletries you are likely to use. God what a question!
Even when I was traveling and staying in hotels on the company dime, and the hotel provided a brand new tube of toothpaste every day, I still used my own.
Maybe that’s where I fall on the spectrum but using unfamiliar toothpaste is unsettling.
My wife agrees. No funny debate here.
Yes because I use an enamel repair toothpaste that I special order and I don’t expect any friends or hotels or Airbnbs to have it
Always. 100% of the time. Most hotels don’t give it to you anymore. Unless you’re traveling in Japan, or staying in really high-end places, you need to bring it.
Pack your own
If someone was staying in my house and used my toothpaste, I’d be shocked.
When traveling I assume I can use theirs if we are family tbh, I never pack it. Not friends tho unless I ask
I find this question kind of odd. I always bring my own toothpaste, not all toothpastes are created equal and some taste gross. Plus…. the act of squirting toothpaste onto a guest’s toothbrush seems gross because of the tube touching the brush that you put into your mouth.
Always. My own pillow too!
Always bring my own! There’s something icky about the thought of sharing a tube. Like you’re making out with everyone who uses that tube.
Blech. Yes I bring my own.
I always use my own. I can’t imagine using anyone else’s even if a family member.
Of course!
If I’m going to my in-laws house where I know they have shampoo, conditioner and body wash in the guest shower, I won’t pack those.
But I’m certainly not going and asking if I can use their toothpaste. 😂
I always care my own toothpaste when traveling even if I am traveling to visit my Dad or my Siblings.
Literally always bring it… It’s a staple and a standard thing that should be in your dopp kit. This comes from somebody who is not a pro traveler. Ever gotten stuck somewhere? Ever not made it all the way to your destination? Know what you still need in either scenario? Toothpaste!
hell no yuck. i don’t even share toothpaste with my husband
Of course! What else would you do? I usually go to the drug store and go to the section with the travel sized toiletries.
I always bring.
Other people’s toothpaste skeeves me. Also, I like the brand I use
All the time. Just don’t trust if a hotel room’s toothpaste was tampered with or not.
Always. Especially a small tube when on a long flight. Gotta get up and brush after napping/sleeping.
I have a travel hygiene kit with far more then toothpaste in it 😄
If I’m visiting someone else I definitely use my own stuff.
An Airbnb we went to had stuff but it was all open which felt really gross…
If it’s a hotel depending on how long we are staying and what they offer I’ll use some of their stuff but still bring some of my things. Partner don’t care he’ll use all the hotel stuff lol
I do along with electric toothbrush
Absolutely
Of course.
I don’t even share toothpaste with my traveling companion.
I don’t even share in my own home 🤣 my bf and I have different drawers with our own tooth brushes and tooth paste
Wait… are there people who DON’T bring their own toothpaste?? They just… expect to use their host’s toothpaste??
I always pack my own toothpaste, yeah.
Toothbrush and toothpaste go together. You bring both. If you see no problem with using your hosts toothpaste, why not save yourself the effort of packing, and use their toothbrush too?
Always bring a tiny tube
I keep my own in my bag. I’ll use whatever is available but prefer my own.
I think it’s extremely rude to expect hosts to provide any toiletries. If they do, that’s very nice, but it shouldn’t be expected!!
Only time I wouldn’t bother is if I’m going to my parents’ house. But I also use sensitive toothpaste so I’m not relying on other people to have the right kind. (I know my parents use the same kind.) Never really occurred to me to be grossed out by sharing, that’s never been my motivation for bringing my own, but I understand why people feel that way.
Always bring my own. Now especially since I’m allergic to the new stuff.
I always pack my own toothpaste. I wouldn’t expect it to be provided anywhere, even at hotels, unless you ask, and I’d be expecting a room charge even then.
I can’t imagine not packing a travel toothpaste at least?
I bring all my own toiletries when I visit someone. Even when visiting family. Hygiene products can get expensive. I’m not going to burden them with using their supply. Also I’m particular about the brands I use. I might not even like what they have on hand.
I’ve always taken my own when traveling. I never assume I can use someone’s stuff. That seems kinda rude to assume. If you forget and ask, that’s different. Assuming is just rude. I mean going to my moms house, sure I’m not worried about that if I’m staying the night there. That’s different, though. So I suppose it depends where you’re staying.
Yes….always ,
First toothpaste are personal items like the openinh touches their used toothbrush u wouldn’t use someone elses toothbrush
2nd some people have really weird toothpaste flavours
(I have seen orange? Srsly? Orange????)
I pack my own.
Yeah, that’s normal, most hotels ect don’t supply toothpaste and it’s also weird to assume that someone else will let you use theirs without asking beforehand.
Always pack toothpaste.
I bring my travel size. If it was a long time boyfriend where we’re intimate and share germs, I would ask if I could use his toothpaste. If he objected to sharing, then no big deal, bring my own every time. Not a hill to die on.
always. i’m picky with toothpaste, partly because i only like certain tastes/textures but also because my teeth aren’t exactly healthy after a childhood of not being forced to brush my teeth and depression in my teen years. so only certain toothpastes work for my teeth. i have to bring my own every time. plus you never know if someone is going to provide toothpaste for you, so better safe than sorry.
If you’re close enough to stay in their home, you’re close enough to use their toothpaste. Bring your own toothbrush though.
I always bring my own. I don’t share with anyone except occasionally my husband. Grosses me out.
1000% I bring everything I expect to need/use.
I use a specific kind. Something with Stannous fluoride. Recommend by my bff/dental hygienist.
I had a go bag in my car. It would have essentials (and plenty of non essentials) tooth brush tooth paste, baby wipes , soap, deodorant, face cream, pens, spare make up I’m ugly as fuck and need it with me for the sake of humanity, spare underwear and plenty of socks, pjs, hoody, shoes for walking , water, cans of coke, chewing gum , I had dog food and spare leads too.
The boot of my car had pretty much everything in it if I chose to stay at a pals house. Especially since we smoke a bit of green and I don’t drive when I’m high or intoxicated so I like to have my shit with me.
I also liked to hike so spare socks and walking runners was a must, my dog used to come everywhere with me so the spare leads and food for him was also essential.
Yes I pack my own every single time
Yes, bring your own.
My toothpaste, my toothbrush. I might have to borrow a little from my husband’s toothpaste, but I generally take enough for the whole trip.
I would never use someone’s toothpaste.
You just steal another man’s toothpaste in his own home? Do you use share his deodorant and wife while you’re at it?
Hotels in Canada and the US do not provide it. You better bring your own!
… Why the fuck would I use someone else’s toothpaste?
Who the f travels without toothpaste?
All of this is so gross. Please do not come to my house and a) wipe your nasty finger on my toothpaste and b) use my tube… we all have the back of a drawer somewhere filled with those little tubes from the dentist’s office, just ask, don’t assume
I bring everything. What kinda question is this.
I have my own toothbrush and toothpaste in my purse everyday… so vacation is a no brainer.
The vast majority of people bring their own toothpaste. Why on earth would you NOT bring your own‽
Better question. Does anyone else not bring their own toothpaste when travelling?
My husband and I definitely bring our own when we travel.
BYOTP
Ew don’t use theirs. Yes I also bring my own
Always bring my own toiletries, including toothpaste. I save the little giveaways from the dentist for travel.
Always bring my own and I’d expect my guests to bring their own as well. I’ll share a lot of things but toothpaste is a little weird to share imo
I always bring my own. I’m also a little weird with things like that. If I won’t share a drink with someone, I won’t share my toothpaste.
A little travel tube of toothpaste is a travel essential.
I always bring my own.
Um, unless the person you are visiting is your partner/lover/fiance or maybe going back to your parent’s house where your old bathroom has toiletries just for you, then it is always BYOT. I do keep a drawer in my guest bathroom for my daughter and her fiance to keep whatever products they like here in our home so they don’t have to fly with stuff, but all our other guests use their own items. I also have a little bowl of sample/mini sized toiletries for guests who might have forgotten something. But the mini tube of toothpaste is not meant to be shared among others; I would toss it out if was even partially used if the guest did not take it with them.
TIL there are people who don’t bring their own toothpaste when they travel.
