No matter what I eat, no matter where I eat, my nose runs. I try to catch it immediately, but the little bugger is fast! (ha…)
But seriously-, during the course of any given meal, I’ll have to blow my nose at least 2-3 times. I don’t recall having this issue as a child… I believe it began some time in my mid teens.
Thing is, this is true of all of the women in my family, to the point where we talk about it. I find it to be frustrating/annoying, somewhat embarrassing… and interesting.
DAE experience this? If so, are you male or female? (Only asking this because I haven’t ever heard a man speak about having this issue.)
Have you found anything that helps?
Comments
Mine doesn’t, unless its spicy food, but I get a phlegmy cough very often when I eat. It is caused by a combination of acid reflux and post nasal drip. Drip goes into lungs, acid irritates throat, cough from irritation brings drip back up. It’s pretty gross.
Runny nose from eating can be called gustatory rhinitis and it isn’t really an allergy or anything else that can treated, as far as I know.
Only if I eat soup or wings
Yes, with all food
Mine does. A friend of mine was trying to lose weight, and got the stomach band surgery. He told me his doctor said, stop eating if your nose starts running, it means you’ve eaten enough. I tend to eat a large dinner and my nose runs before I finish every night, but I never noticed it until talking with my friend.
I do, and it’s annoying as hell. If I forgot to bring tissues and I’m at a restaurant that gives cloth napkins, I have to ask for extra paper napkins to wipe my nose with. I’m a trans man so idk how/if that impacts things. Medical problems in trans people are under-researched, but there’s ample evidence that you experience health conditions in the same way as whatever is the dominant hormone in your system, so I’ve been transitioning long enough that I experience things like any cis man would
It doesn’t happen to me, but it does to my mom. It’s called gustatory rhinitis.
Usually. And when I brush my teeth. And sometimes when I talk.
YES…me like all of the time and I actually found out what it could be thanks to of course Tik Tok. It could be something called Gustatory Rhinitis. So basically when you are chewing it stimulates the trigminal nerve to activate your parasympathic nervous system. This is the system responsible for salivation but in this case also mucus production in your nose.
So…those with hyperactive parasympathtic nervous systems have an issue that when they eat their nose runs.
Hope that helps. I guess we will have to find something that doesn’t overstimulate our nervous system LOL
Yes w everything.
Absolutely, every single time, so much so that I have a separate napkin waiting to blow my damn nose, I hate it, I wish it would stop, happens a lot less with ice cream/cold foods, but damn it’s annoying. Also when I eat a fuckload of sugar really quickly my nipples tingle.
No, but since my brain surgery left the left side of my face paralyzed, every time I eat, my left eye just pours tears.
I assume the action of chewing is stimulating my tear ducts in some weird way.
Look up Gustatory Rhinitis. When specific foods are consumed, they stimulate the trigeminal nerve, which sends signals to the nasal glands to produce more mucus.
I noticed this at beginning of the pandemic. I was sitting with family. And I mentioned this. Me and like 3 other people we all have this problem. I always bring it up. Nobody seems to be bothered bye it but me. Like I felt like the only person that found it strange.
Yes, a constant water drip throughout the meal. Hate it.
I’ve seen this question here before, I remember reading that it’s a condition some people have, usually with specificfoods but in some cases with any food
Yes. There is a surgery called ClariFix that is used to treat this.
Clarifix procedure
The ClariFix procedure is a minimally-invasive treatment that uses cryotherapy to reduce symptoms of chronic rhinitis, such as a runny or stuffy nose. It involves freezing the overactive nerves in the back of the nose to disrupt the signals causing excessive mucus production. The procedure is typically performed in the office and takes around half an hour. During the procedure, the nose is numbed with a local anesthetic, and a cooling device is inserted into the back of the nose. The device is held in place for about 30 to 45 seconds in each nostril. Patients may feel slight pressure, a cooling sensation, or some discomfort during the procedure, but it is generally well-tolerated.
Recovery time is minimal, with most patients able to return to normal activity the same day. Some patients may experience increased congestion or mild discomfort for a short time after the procedure due to normal post-procedure swelling. Long-term relief from symptoms typically begins within two to six weeks after the procedure.
The ClariFix procedure has been shown to be effective and safe, with no major adverse events reported in studies. Minor adverse effects include post-procedural pain and discomfort, headache, and palate numbness. It is generally covered by most health insurance policies, but patients should check their policy cover and may need a referral letter.
Yep! I assume it has to do with mastication
Same for me but only for hot (as in temperature) and/or spicy food; I think it’s called gustatory rhinitis
It’s called Gustatory Rhinitis
Yep, doesn’t matter what I eat – bread, cereal, soup, ice cream. I’m a female in my 40s and this started about 10 years ago for me.
My ENT doc and I just discussed this on friday! Apparently there’s a procedure to make you have less phlegm and it can help with the eating/snot thing.
Yes. Every time.
No, but I sneeze three times after meals frequently. It is very annoying.
Yup. I believe it has to do with my vargus nerve. I have to stop eating or slow down when I start sneezing or if my nose starts running… buuuut I had a gastric bypass.
However, before surgery, Chinese food made my nose run like crazy and a head ache later. I think it’s msg.
YES!!! I hope someone on this thread has a reason why!
I had this exact problem to the point that eating was a chore. I had an operation that 90% fixed it.
Yes! It happens to me all the time! Nobody else in my family does this, I thought I was the only one!
Female here, my nose runs like yours anytime I eat, Tho I am trying to figure out if its pepper or not that sets it off. It is embarrassing!
I sneeze when I’m full. I looked into it a while back and it’s something like the weight of the food tugs in the stomach and hits a nerve which makes you sneeze. Perhaps it’s connected?
Can guarantee though. Three sneezes means I’m full. One is a fluke, two is sus and three is full.
Only when I eat spicy food
Mine only does this with spicy or sour food
my husbands nose runs while even eating ice cream. literally eating anything, like you.
I get phlegm. I don’t have a runny nose.
I get watery eyes. Close.
It’s called gustatory rhinitis. Had it forever.
Only from chilli foods, or if its cold outside it pools on outside bottom of nose until I blow it off or it drips
Yes! I’ve never met anyone else who has this issue. I always have to blow my nose after eating.
34y Female here, this happens with me, my mom and her dad/my grandfather (although his was more of a drip).
I finally got to see an ENT (Thank God for Canada and free Healthcare!!) and in my case it’s a functional issue (something that cannot be corrected with surgery), not a structural issue (like a deviated septum).
I have rhinitis which is a reaction that can cause nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, or itching. Most types of rhinitis are caused by an inflammation and can associated with other symptoms in the eyes, ears, or throat.
In some cases it can be caused by allergies but in my case it’s more of an inflammatory issue and is triggered when eating/brushing teeth.
Ultimately I have a drying nasal spray (I think) that I take in the morning and a steroid nasal spray I use at night because at night it feels like my nasal passages are totally clogged and I can’t clear them.
Gustatory rhinitis is a known medical condition, one which I also suffer from.
I forget the name of it. Your doctor can give you a nasal spray for it.
No, but my nose runs every time I get cold, without fail😂
Look up vasomotor rhinitis and go see an ENT doc.
Loving the responses here.
Yes it happens to me, female, 25.
YES!!!! but this recently started for me like in the past months, i’m so shocked to see this come up in my feed, i didn’t realize this happens to other people!
Mine runs with exercise!
My eyes tear up from carbonated beverages
It runs when I eat and also after I cum. Go fig.
My mom had always done it and I recently started it too after having my first child, figured it was a mom thing lol
It’s most likely genetic.
If I’m eating a full meal I definitely will have to blow my nose at least 2 times. Not if I’m just having a little snack but for a full meal yes, every time.
edit: am male
omg, my husband and I (45f) talk about this regularly. When we set the table I get two napkins just so I have one for my nose. No idea when it started but I hate it in restaurants because, not only do I have to either go to the bathroom or be kind of rude, my nose is LOUD. It’s awful.

This happens to me, but only since I got pregnant. I assumed it was a weird pregnancy symptom? Dining table tissue box is a new essential.
It’s called gustatory rhinitis
Yes! It’s so embarrassing.
Dude. Yes. It’s hella annoying and I have no idea why it happens. I have no allergies.
Yes, all food does it to me. It’s not horrible, but there’s definitely enough that I have to blow my nose at the end of the meal if I don’t want to suck it all up.
I used to date a guy whose nose would start running like crazy every time we would start kissing or doing anything intimate. That was always a bit awkward.
Mine runs constantly food or no food. I went to an ENT in 1997 to find out why. He had no idea. I am 52 now. I got so tired of running out of Kleenex. So I just use paper towels now. What can I do? I am so sick of blowing my nose. Can someone give me an idea please? I carry a paper towels in my car and purse. It is embarrassing to blow my nose in stores and everywhere I go.
This started happening to me when I was like 25. It annoys me so much bc I hate blowing my nose in front of people.
I’m a woman, and my dad and brother also have to do this every time they eat. I personally think it’s just a combination of your nose continually growing throughout your life (hear me out) and that you change as you grow older; I have different seasonal allergies than I used to, and simply more nose to cause problems. You know how you wash your face with hot water then need to blow your nose? I think eating warm food is similar. Your whole face is near your sinuses.
I’m in really good shape now compared to when I was younger so I don’t think that has to do with it, in my case.
It’s happening to me right now and I ate two slices of turkey bacon and coffee for breakfast.
Yep!! I’ve gotta have a stack of pocket tissues in case there’s no boxes around.
there are two common forms of a food related to my knowledge
The first is a condition where chewing stimulates the same nerves which fires when your nose is irritated. This causes your nose to run as it thinks there’s something in there.
The other is the fumes from the food irritating the nose. Anything like strong smells or even just steam. The vapour either irritates the lining (e.g. spicy food) or triggers the hairs (like steam) causing the nose to run.
I have the runny nose, but it’s the sneezing that frustrates me. Nearly every time I eat, I sneeze 3-8 times, then my nose runs for about 10 minutes. I was having persistent asthma exacerbation, so I had a full allergy workup. I was told mold was the likely cause of the asthma flare up, and the sneezing was gustatory rhinitis. We did find the mold source and fixed that, but the sneezing continues. Gustatory rhinitis describes the symptoms but doesn’t explain why. Human bodies are weird.
Yes, but this only started when I developed LPR at age 50.
no but everytime i do my makeup it does!
Mechanical rhinitis! Yup!
Yup, mine does. It’s super annoying (and a tad bit embarrassing) when I’m out with friends or colleagues for lunch/dinner. It usually begins a few bites in and bothers me a lot.
