David Goggins is addicted to exercise and shouldn’t be glorified.

r/

Goggins is often put on a pedestal as this amazing athlete that people admire for his work ethic.

Here’s the thing, I don’t think goggins can turn it off. He’s addicted to exercise so he doesn’t have a choice about it.

Broken feet, no cartilage in the knees, extreme physical pain? He keeps working through all of it. He does it not because he is mentally strong, he does it because he’s addicted and cannot stop himself.

Edit: goggins is definitely mentally strong and will carry the boats and the logs for all of us. Im saying that his obsession with exercise comes from a place of addiction, not discipline.

I wouldn’t say addicted to exercise, I would say he uses it as a coping mechanism/ uses the fatigue to offset internal issues.
It depends on what you think is and isn’t healthy.

  4. capt-yossarius Avatar

I don’t believe he is addicted to exercise. I think he’s is addicted to the image he has created for himself. Who would pay attention to him if he exercised a healthy amount?

  5. SixskinsNot4 Avatar

What if he’s just addicted to getting better. Wants to push himself past the limit of what’s possible. People care to much about what other people do

  6. smoovelball Avatar

so your opinion is “david goggins shouldn’t be glorified as an amazing athlete because he’s addicted to being an amazing athlete?” do you want him to be nonchalant about it or something?😭😭

  7. HehroMaraFara Avatar

A common criticism of the fat and unhealthy for those that stay active. It’s a compensation for them knowing they are lazy and unmotivated.

Goggins during his next jogging vlog

    “So I heard OP talking……on Reddit…..the other day…..talking about ME……what OP……doesn’t understand……is that I……am not about to let my inner-bitch…..tell me…..when enough is enough…..too many people……let their inner-bitch…..tell them……it’s too much…..”

Saying Goggins isn’t mentally strong is insane lol. Take my upvote.

  10. terdferg88 Avatar

THE ONLY THING GOGGINS IS ADDICTED TO, IS GRINDING THE PAIN OF LIFE INTO TOOTHPASTE SO THAT EVERYONE CAN SEE THE PAIN. THE PAIN SHINES THROUGH AFTER I MAKE IT MY BITCH. ITS A VENEER OF LIFE MOTHER FUCKER.

  11. Tenenentenen Avatar

Maybe you just don’t know him son

I don’t think he’s addicted to exercise, I think he has a really unhealthy mentality though; and I was in the Army, I totally get where it comes from. Some of the stuff you go through for Rangers, or BUDs is insane on the mental, and the no-quit-the-weak-are-meat-the-strong-eat mentality is pretty much required.

I think his advice has certain merit: yes being healthy is on you, yes you need to do stuff even when you don’t want to do it.

Do you need to run 12 miles every single day? Get up at 3AM? Work out constantly?

No, most health or fitness professionals will tell you that’s stupid and will harm you more than help you.

David Goggins’ strongest attribute is his ability to endure situations that most (not all) people could not, but I don’t think it’s an addiction – it’s just who he is.

  13. Person7751 Avatar

he has done some stupid and unhealthy stuff. running until you cause serious harm to your body is not healthy

  17. Big-Routine222 Avatar

I listened to his audio book and he also says plainly that what he does isn’t normal and that people probably should t do it because of the health issues that can occur.

  18. 214speaking Avatar

He’s addicted to pain and suffering, yes. We don’t have to glorify it, but you have to respect it because he’s showing how far the human body can be pushed and he still won’t break.

  21. I-Despise-Trump Avatar

I’d agree in so far as that I think anything can be taken to utter extremes. However, calling him not mentally strong is an insane take. The man was a Navy seal, and it takes a lot of mental grit to push through his pain, addiction or otherwise. It takes mental grit to wake up at 3-4 am to run every morning.

Most people who exercise do it for health and to be in good shape. It’s a really bad idea to train as much as David Goggins, though, as you’re basically just destroying your body. But I feel like Goggins has to do that to maintain his image. No hate to the man, I respect him a lot.

  22. Baron-Von-Mothman Avatar

Some people do heroin, some people overwork their body in a gym bitching on the internet about everyone else being a bitch.

  24. NastyLuv Avatar

I don’t know Goggins. Barely seen anything about him. I was a Marine. I got “addicted” in a way to running. I had to run about 6 miles at least as day, or I would feel nauseous. I talked with a lot of staff sergeants and Gunny’s, (E6-E7) and higher. And they all had the same thing going on. Once you really FLIP the SWITCH, not is a thing I can’t attest to. But it happened to me.  It only seems weird to normal people bc normal people don’t need to run 7 miles a day to not puke.

  25. Minimum-Wait-7940 Avatar

Addiction doesn’t mean you don’t have agency.

Even if he was addicted and couldn’t stop it wouldn’t matter because there’s no UL on the benefits of exercise. It’s all good for him.

This horseshit we’re constantly being told now about how everyone is “overdoing it” on cardio or whatever is just something lazy couch potatoes in the west invented so they don’t have to feel so bad about binge watching Netflix and having every day be a cheat day as they gradually sink into DM2 and obesity like everyone else.

I get he’s got discipline and it’s impressive he can do what he does. I disagree he’s not mentally strong though, he is. You gotta be to push yourself that hard.

But at the same time I find him so incredibly corny and cringeworthy.

  31. spb8982 Avatar

I’d hit a plateau in my training and had gotten over 300lbs again for the first time in 20 years. I saw an interview with goggins that made me think of a different idea for my training. It jump started my training and I’m down 25lbs in 2 months. I had seen hundreds of videos and interviews with him and this time it just clicked. Maybe it hasn’t clicked for you but he’s motivated a lot of people.

I think he’s just insane. Like similar to the people that spend their whole lives believing and loving for a conspiracy theory type of insane.

Still gets me pumped when I listen to him.

  34. kejovo Avatar

I don’t disagree with your thoughts that he is addicted to it BUT he is a motivating individual for a lot of people. I’m not one of them. I haven’t found ANYTHING that can motivate me to work out on a regular basis.

  35. blue0231 Avatar

    Both things can be true?

Michael Jordan was probably “addicted” to basketball. He not worth celebrating anymore?

By your logic, only people who are worthy of being celebrated are casual engagers.

  41. DrBlaziken Avatar

If you think running till your knees explode is his message, you’ve not understood what he’s trying to say.

That’s what HE does. He never tells anyone else to do that.

  42. HorsedickGoldstein Avatar

Sounds like your inner bitch talking

  43. ShinyToucan Avatar

It’s simply not practical for regular people. I have a full time job and a child at home and it’s a miracle that I can still hit the gym for a ONE hour workout 3-4 times a week.

I see these videos online of people trying to copy goggins and I’m just sitting here wondering if they even have a job or do anything else aside from the “goggins challenge”. On top of that some of these guys are out here injuring themselves thinking the key to being in “shape” and being ripped is just to fight through all the pain. Just be tougher!

  44. Beautiful-Fold-3234 Avatar

What i think is key here is that he managed to become this person, despite his natural state being the exact opposite. It is not just about what he does, there are others who do the same, it is about what he had to overcome to get to where he is.

Being naturally eager to exercise is great, but its not something a lot of people can relate to. Being fat and lazy and turning your life around is a much more inspiring story.

  45. dam_sharks_mother Avatar

LOL it’s not just his obsession, it is his career. It is his identity. And good for him. If you are a nobody with no professional career and all you have to do is exercise and talk shit on podcasts to make $500k a year, wouldn’t you do the same?

I only tangentially know about this dude, never listened to him say a single word. No interest.

  46. kanahl Avatar

I’ve never even heard of David goggins.

  47. FooFootheSnew Avatar

You know what he will never have that many of us will? Enough.

Imagine having to prove yourself to yourself that much. It would be one thing if he just really enjoyed it, but the whole inner bitch thing is sad. Like, you couldn’t be happy with 5 miles? It has to be 35 huh?

I’m definitely not into complacency, but there comes a point where achievement becomes almost cringe. I guess it depends on how you get there. People hyper focused on one thing typically are shit at other things in their life (relationships, personality, etc.).

Also, not him so much, but I’ve seen others similar where it borders on hypomania.

  48. Careless-Hyena-4650 Avatar

Rather have him glorified than some body positive influencer mf promoting diabetes and an early life lol.

For every goggins that gets away with this level of self punishment, there is 10,000 men who have completely fucked themselves up physically for life and have a severely reduced capacity to perform physical activities regardless of surgery or PEDS, based on that exact same mindset

I had to teach myself how to calm the fuck down , due to repetition of injuries leading to long term degradation in physical performance and suffer the life long effects of obsession with exercise to this day
