Location: Texas. My estranged father passed away recently, and it took more than a month for word to get to me, as it had been 20+ years since we were last in contact. A sibling is working on filing all the paperwork to settle the estate, which is a piece of land in a rural area and the condemned home he was living in. The police officer that did the wellness check where he was found deceased said the roof and floors were caved in, everything looked destroyed by the weather, and couldn’t imagine anyone living there and that from the road, it didn’t look like a home was even there.
None of his children live in state, and since the home had been described to us in an unlivable state with anything of value potentially ruined, we’re not in a rush to go down there to try to enter or secure it.
However, this weekend someone got in touch with my mom to say people had been entering the home and property and cooking meth.
Could any of us be responsible for not securing the property and someone hurting themselves on it? What should we do to secure the property? Have it bulldozed? I don’t live in the U.S. anymore, and I don’t want to fly home and deal with this trashy BS unless I really have to.
