Depressed before going on vacation?

r/

Never fails. Going on vacation tomorrow to Disney with the family and then a cruise. Always get an overwhelming sense of depression the day before. Not sure why. Maybe I just hate leaving the normalcy of my life.

Is it the unexplainable disappointment that you are not feeling as excited as you thought you’d be? Kind like on birthdays…?

I think planning for the trip is the first peak of the experience. The send peak is being on the trip. In between there’s a rest and breath of air. This could be the night before, the trip to the airport, the morning of when you’re getting ready… The drop in anticipation may cause some neutral mood and you may see it as depression.

I usually get depressed on vacation after a day or two. Maybe it’s knowing I’ll have to go back soon

I get that feeling too. I don’t know about you, but packing for myself and for my whole family is almost always overwhelming and depressing. I then go on to have a good trip!

Going on vacation doesn’t feel great for me either. I think it’s mostly related to be overworked. Even being gone a few days puts me way behind. I also feel bad that we are understaffed so it creates more work for others too.

I want to add we are conditioned to believe we should travel. But traveling is not enjoyable for everyone.

Grieving in a way? A departure from all the things you usually care for or care about? I do not get depressed but I do get kind of annoyed that I have to leave my familiar surroundings, more so as I age and have my home life closer and closer to exactly how I want it! Also the first few days of any trip are usually mentally draining as are the days just prior as you antcipate and work through all the checkpoints: baggage checks, TSA, hotel check ins, having enough of all prescriptions, anticipating multiple social encounters, etc. So you may be in a “heavy sigh lots of mentally draining stuff just ahead.”
