Dexter is cheesy and contrived. Character development is all over the place and changes direction at the drop of a hat. Gimmicky and absolutely not brilliant, not comparable to other crime dramas at all.

You just don’t like Dexter.
When series shows came out on things like Netflix, that was what the Buzz was all about. We made fun of it, calling them soap operas at first. They are all soap operas, just on a more contemporary platform.
bad take
That was the style for episodic prime time dramedies of the time.
Edit to add: have y’all seen Weeds? Love that show. Another good example: Desperate Housewives. Also, to a certain extent, Monk. And Psych. And some episodes of Scrubs.
Dexter is a great show.
It’s my favourite.
I even have a Dexter Morgan tattoo.
it’s wack.
always been wack.
Agree, but on sone fundamental level this applies to a lot of “hardcore” shows like House and Breaking Bad.
I remember being glued to it when it was ongoing, but after one of the seasons with a dumb ending, I realized the whole show had been dumb all along. I still don’t know how it ends.
I can only judge it by the initial series as that’s the only one I’ve seen. Yes, cheesy with a manufactured feel to it. Canned acting by many in the supporting cast. Shabby casting in general.
And yet I continued to watch the entire series because it had an interesting premise. Perhaps also because there was a bit of loyalty to Michael C Hall who was in a brilliant series called Six Feet Under prior to that.
Even with all of that said, I’m still interested in checking out the follow-up series. :/
The premise resonates with people, vigilante justice can be cathartic. Plus, it’s not Dexter’s fault, he’s a victim too. I enjoyed the first season, a guilty pleasure for sure, but it got tedious quickly. I kept hoping he’d kill his obnoxious sister.
I absolutely came to agree with you around when it first ended. Trinity’s even overrated. The character’s great and fascinating and all, but most of the conflict with him is cat-and-mouse due to procrastination for one reason or another. It’s just SUPER frustrating, plot wise. Especially since it leads to the show’s most devastating death.
But when New Blood was announced, I re-evaluated my feelings. Rewatched it, and suddenly realized I could still thoroughly enjoy the show…even though I think it sucks.
So yeah, Dexter is like my biggest guilty pleasure show. Also feel that way about (the US) Shameless now. Probably could get that feeling for The Walking Dead as well if I rewatched it all, honestly.
That’s what makes it good tho
It sucks
Yup, think it’s trash. Sorry but downvote from me not unpopular
agreed. i was waiting for it to get a bit deeper, more about the moral side of everything. there always seemed to be an easy out for dexter
Dexter was great
yeah dexter is a great show in concept but was executed horribly
Typical mid 2000 series that would be completely forgettable were it not for the main actor. See also: Dr. House.
I remember saying this to myself during the later seasons—early on, Dexter had that gritty early 2000s vibe, but it never really felt like a soap opera to me. It was a drama that gave us the point of view of a killer you actually rooted for, which was pretty uncommon back then. Now that kind of storytelling is everywhere. Honestly, I think Netflix’s You is way more of a soap opera than Dexter ever was. Dexter felt fairly grounded in reality, especially in the earlier seasons. Sure, there were plot holes—mostly in the later seasons—but it didn’t lean into that melodramatic, over-the-top vibe until Hannah McKay showed up. That’s when it really started to feel cheesy and soap opera-like, and honestly, kind of boring.
I’m over here like , what? Dexter’s laboratory was great. Until I read the comments.
Peak dexter was a great show. The writing key it down in later seasons, but the first season was pretty flawless in ambition and execution, pun intended.
First two seasons were great.
After that, meh.
I agree on cheesy sometimes. Some of the dialogue is just so slow, and that’s not even counting the long monologue pauses.
Back in the day I couldn’t watch Dexter while high. I would just notice how cheesy everything was lol. Breaking Bad on the other hand, no problem 🔥
