No matter how old I get or how many I drink, I can’t ever enjoy artificially sweetened beverages. Aspartame, sucralose, and even natural sweeteners like Stevia are repulsive to me. I’m aware that they are known to have an aftertaste, but everyone just seems to ignore it or even enjoy it. Yeah, it’s harmful for your body to consume processed sugar. If you drink normal soda regularly, the calories add up. But if you’re trying to watch your weight, why not just drink water instead? Unless you really crave the taste of soda and the caffeine or whatnot, I get it, but those sweeteners just ruin the drink for me. The worst part is that everyone in my family loves zero sugar drinks, and they regularly drink them. I just stick to water most of the time. It’s healthier anyway.

Most people who like soda dont like diet soda, not unpopular.
That would be more of a personal preference than an unpopular opinion.
I genuinely love the taste of Coke zero
im weirder i genuinely prefer the taste of diet / zero sugar drink over ordinary sugary drinks i always choose zero sugar
>why not just drink water instead
Because I like the taste of my diet cream soda more than I do water.
I’m diabetic, don’t really have a choice in drinking diet and zero sugar pop.
Some people just want to stay skinny and still have Sodas 🙌🏻.
I’m with you buddy. And they put those shitty sweeteners in pretty much everything these days.
People enjoy the taste of different things differently. Shocker!!
I agree. Give me my sugar and chemicals dammit
I’ve been on a Zero Sugar Dr. Pepper kick lately.
How is this unpopular? No upvote for you
Coke Zero and Dr Pepper zero are far superior to their normal/full sugar variants.
Water alone is fine, but I want to drink things other than water also 🤷‍♂️
Regular soda is sickeningly sweet.
I agree.Â
But I do find it interesting that if I ask other people who like diet drinks what they taste like. They will say stuff like “it tastes really sweet”, “it tastes the same”, “I don’t get any aftertaste”.Â
It’s like the trick works on some peoples tongues but not others. People definitely experience them differently.
We got unlucky not being able to enjoy both artificial sweeteners’ taste and the health benefits. We have to pick one.Â
Hopefully they develop a sweetener in the future that tricks my tongue.Â
Sprite zero is better than original sprite. It’s way more refreshing and not as sickly sweet.
I believe that, how some people think cilantro tastes like soap.
that artifical sugar as well, to some people, tastes like asshole/cancer. we are of those people.
I’m glad they exist but I’m sticking to regular. It’s how I got me my type 2 diabetes but it’s worth it if it tastes better.
First off most “diet” sodas are unhealthy for you in general but also something you should avoid if you’re actually trying to, you know, diet or lose weight. Because most of that artificial stuff lowers your metabolism which is the worse thing you can do for yourself to get/keep the weight off.
For me, Coke Zero and similar, I suppose they taste better than their “diet” versions, which I suppose still use nutrasweet, but they still don’t taste that good.
Diet coke > coke
I agree with you. Water is the best drink anyway.
Agreed, I see ppl say that diet versions taste exactly like regular ones and they do NOT. The zero varieties also taste very different as well. Drink whatever you want, like whatever you want, but don’t lie to my face when I have taste buds too, lol.Â
I’m of the opposite opinion. I grew up with a diabetic sister, and I haven’t drank regular sodas since 1991. When I accidentally get a sugary drink, I’m very grossed out by it. I get almost instant heartburn from sugary beverages. I also actually like the taste of aspartame.
I always get Zero Sugar Sprite because it’s the only thing sold practically everywhere, as part of an effort to cut sugar out of my diet entirely.
At first you hate it, then you get used to it. Before long, you want that over anything else besides water. Now any regular soda is disgusting.
I prefer the Zero variation of drinks over diet.
I only drink water and Propel and coffee
Fully agree, esp diet energy drinks taste terrible. Just drink water man.Â
Yeah I just want something sweet sometimes and drinks other than water (that doesn’t have my daily dose of sugar in one serving). I won’t drink it constantly but one is nice here and there
This is definitely a popular opinion. Most people act like I’m a freak for liking Coke Zero. But hey, I’ve lost 50 lbs, at least in part, due to cutting out sugary soda.
Interesting thing… If you get Coke Zero at a fountain, and the ratio of syrup is off (too strong?) it has a cinnamon aftertaste. I rather like it!
I agree. Coke Zero and diet coke have the same shitty aspertame taste to me.
Aspartame is poison
I WISH they were good. I can’t really drink fake sugar and even if I could it tastes gross. Diet, Zero, I tired. It’s just awful. I want a 1 for 1 of sugar.
Diet drinks taste like chemicals.
Yes and what’s even more odd is there worse for you packed with artificial sugars replacing the all ready bad enough corn syrup with cancer ya I’m good…
Even Coke Zero?
Coke Zero was invented because it mimiced the taste of Coke much better than Diet Coke.
I assume a reason they still sell Diet coke is because people adapted to the taste of Diet Coke and prefer that.
You’ll pry my Diet Coke out of my cold dead hands.
Most people dislike diet drinks, not an unpopular opinion.
I prefer the taste of diet soda to regular soda.
I haven’t had any soda pop for 5+ years.
I grow stevia in my garden and dry the leaves that I then use to steep with my loose leaf tea. Not the white processed powder stevia, just dried stevia leaves. For me it’s the chemicals and processing that produce the after taste, not the plant itself.
YMMV.
Nah… everyone thinks they are disgusting… they just get used to them after a while because sugary beverages are too sweet.
For some reason beverage companies can’t just make something in between. Use real sugar but less of it.
Diet Sodas rule lol. Beat it nerd.
Regular coke makes my teeth feel chalky…but coke zero is my crack Cocaine.
I am generally with you, but I will say Diet Dr. Pepper is quite close to the original. There are some Gatorade Zero flavors (Apple Burst, Berry, Glacier Freeze) that are also pretty decent. Propel is also not bad if you’re trying to watch your weight but want something other than straight water.
The fake sugars are absurdly sweet and taste terrible, the worst part is the drinks have little to no calories so there is no point in drinking them. Give me full calories or give me water (which is also 0 cals but good for you)
They’ve gotten better over the years, and also taste better the more you have them as the palate adapts.
I don’t drink as much diet soda as I used to, but I think regular soda is gross at this point. If I’m in the mood, I’ll put up with the aspartame aftertaste over the 40 grams of sugar per can.
Those that say “just drink water” are the no-fun crowd. We’re living life, and perhaps it’s nice to enjoy a thing called FLAVOR. Also there’s always the in-between, which is flavored seltzer. People might consider that unappealing, but again it’s something one has to develop a palate for.
Allulose is the best but I have IBS and it gives me gas.
For me as someone who doesn’t drink soda all the time (my sugary drink fix is usually in sweetened teas or juices), I typically treat myself to diet soda. There is a LOT of sugar in sodas. A crazy amount. Sweeteners aren’t the best for you ever in the world, but they don’t do much harm if you aren’t consuming them all the time. And even then, compared to if you had a soda a day with full amount of sugar? Do people think that’s better for you or something? That amount of sugar adds up. And throws off your body’s balance. I like the taste of soda, but I seriously don’t need 55g of sugar. A little aspartame and stevia is better than a killer headache and a bunch of acne the next day for me at least.
After a few years of diet sodas your taste buds get so vitiated you can’t tell the difference.
I like the coke brand zero drinks, but you have to drink them cold and fast. The carbonation lasts like half as long as a regular soda
Diet soda is for people who needed to give up soda, but couldn’t cope without it
I just water down simply lemonade or other juices. In Europe they just water down juice to minimize calories and sugars
As a diabetic, diet/zero sugar drinks are my only option for soda. But I’m also not trying to lose weight or eat extremely healthy. People switching to diet soda for dieting reminds me of smokers going to vape as an extra step to stop.
I rarely drink soda, but when I do, it is cane sugar soda. I hate what the high fructose corn syrup does to my body now I’ve worked so hard to reduce it as much as is possible. I also can’t stand the taste of diet.
It tastes better too.
Classic sugar addict
I always call it the ‘splenda’ taste. Only because that was the first artificial sweetener I remember tasting like that. Never been a fan lol
Zero cal monster guava is delicious
The way it films your mouth over is really off putting to me
I can’t do any diet drinks, I clock the aspartame, stevia, etc, right away. I tried those Bai wonderwater, Olipop, and Poppi, too, and didnt like any of them. I get a lingering aftertaste, but it’s not that bad.
I’ve tried the Sparkling Ice drinks, and they are okay. I still taste the sucralose, but it’s not as bad.
I think their only value is that they are useful as the sort method of tricking your brain for awhile that youre still drinking cola or whatever and can help make the translation to water a bit smoother.
It’s a taste you can get acquired to, if you really want to avoid processed sugars, like most people should, but still have a sweet tooth.
Soda in general is disgusting
I was drinking lots of Gatorade fit for a while but it didn’t last in my area. Thought it tasted great tho
Diet drinks suck but for some reason zero drinks taste far superior
Yup they are all garbage. People who like them are NPCs sorry
Unpopular opinion? I mean I happen to not mind artificial sweeteners, but it seems like a pretty even split between people who like them vs people who don’t.
Dr Pepper Zero is nearly identical to the regular. And everyone I’ve spoken to has said the same thing. Other diet sodas? Bad.
I’m with you. I don’t drink sugary drinks that often, but when I do, I want it to actually taste good. Otherwise I can just drink water. But some people don’t even taste the difference. When I was still at school, I had a teacher who claimed you can’t distinguish regular coke from diet coke. So the whole class did a blind tasting and every single student got it right.
Artificial sweeteners wreck your gut biome
How it feels to be a Sprite enjoyer and then move to the UK, a place where non-diet Sprite doesn’t exist
There’s regular versions of most drinks but for some reason Sprite is not one of them
Is this in response to the post on the pet peeves sub where theirs was people critizing them for drinking diet soda?
Am I the only one that thinks Diet Coke and regular coke tastes the same
i actually find that it is so varied by an individual. I love aspartame and sucralose based stuff but stevia tastes like grass to me and adds zero sweetness. My gf can’t drink anything with aspartame, says it tastes like baking soda to her, sucralose is too sweet and stevia actually tastes nice and sweet to her. I have no idea why this is so but different sweeteners feel different to different people
