Disney’s Belle and Gaston would’ve been a good match

r/

Gaston “ever since the war I’ve been craving a sense of [je ne sais quoi]” and belle “I want so much more than this provincial life” like ??? Yall could explore the world together! He could tell her stories of being in the 7 years war (heavily implied by the live action movie), she could help him find his sense of exploration and intellectual stimulation which he is clearly seeking out.

True, the cartoon Gaston is MUCH more of a d-bag and wants her to be some weird dumb trad wife but live action Gaston? Her intellectual match for sure.

Yeah, but he was an arrogant twat

    I for one, embrace neo-Gastonism.

She had higher standards. She wanted a Prince and a life with magic and excitement, and it worked out for her in the end. Plus that castle is far more gorgeous than any rustic hunting lodge.

Cartoon came before the live action so your argument kind of lacks there.  Also most Disney live actions have been PC pleasers and sunk pretty hard…..

Didn’t he lock Belle’s father up in an asylum in the live movie?

God it’s so nice to see a post in this sub that’s an actual subjective opinion most people disagree with and not just somebody having no clue how something works or “It’s ok for me to be a jerk and everyone should still be nice to me despite my actions.”

    Well done, sir/ma’am/preferred honorific.

Hard disagree btw but that’s what the sub is for lol

Are you referring to the live action Disney movie? Or one of the others?

Pretty sure that treating your partner as just another trophy for you to show off while actively degrading their interests and intelligence means you aren’t a good match

I mean, you have to have a movie. But I agree if Gaston got a little humility and didn’t do so much crazy stuff to manipulate his way to Belle, he actually would have been a fairly decent guy.

Gaston is the type of guy you cover your drink around.

Oh Belle would never be allowed to travel. She’d be too busy being barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen

I can almost get on board with this, but for me it’s more that he’s about a step and a half away from what WOULD be a good match for her. Even cartoon exaggeration aside, he’s pretty clearly shown to be a twatwaffle in a number of ways, self absorbed, and convinced that he deserves what he wants.

I 100% see where you’re coming from though, and lowkey love the dynamic of the adventurous world traveller and the endlessly curious more bookish one, too. Absolutely can’t fault you for this one.

The best argument for Belle hitching her wagon to Gaston was the upcoming French Revolution. Who would you rather be married to during the Reign of Terror, a salt of the earth hunter from the French countryside or a literal Prince living in an ostentatious castle?

Gaston didn’t actually care about any of Belle’s wants or needs. He wanted her because she was beautiful, and he thought he was entitled to the most beautiful woman in town. He also seemed to view her turning him down as a challenge. He continues to push her into marrying him even when she says no. This all culminates with him trying to force her into marriage and then locking up her and her father when she said no.

This Gaston is the same misogynistic ass he was in the cartoon. If they married he would make all the decisions and would force her to accept. Doesn’t matter if Belle wants to travel and explore and find adventure. All that matters is what he wants. Belle was a trophy for him, nothing more

He’s also not “intellectual” at all. She tries to have a conversation about what she’s reading and the best he can manage out is “you know….books.” Compare that to Adam, who has a full library that he gifts to her and spends hours reading with her
