I’ve recently filed for divorce, and it’s actually the friendliest, kindest divorce I could have imagined. No kids, no real assets. Lots of love and respect, but we’ve just grown apart and want different things.
He’s staying in the house and will keep most of the furniture because it’s all too large for an apartment. I’ll be living moving to a different city in a few more months and we will be living together until then.
I’m envisioning my new space and starting to think about what specific items I’ll buy and/or keeping an eye out for things on Facebook marketplace.
I’ll need living room furniture, a bedframe/headboard, and a kitchen table/chairs. Do you have any of these that you love? On your wishlist? I want to really like whatever I get.

I absolutely love my Interior Define couch (so comfortable but also very nice looking) and metal bed frame from Pottery Barn.
Go and lay on a mattress to see what you like. Turn on your side, flip to the other side. Same with a couch. I thought id love cushy velvet but nope. Leather is where it’s at. Comfy, durable and timeless
One of the things I miss is my apartment before I got married: Getting to pick all the furniture and decor without having to consult with anyone. My husband and I had somewhat different tastes so our home, while nice, is all furniture and design we both could agree on. This means I don’t get my bold leopard print wall paper powder room or a custom granny floral print English roll arm sofa or accent chair with casters.
I don’t have any advice, just want to encourage you to have fun with the process of designing your post-marriage space. Fill it with things you love, styled the way you like, and may it be a place you always want to come home to (or never leave – that may be bad for dating in the future though!) Good luck!
For right now, get yourself the best bed/mattress you can afford. And maybe a nice, cozy armchair and ottoman. I wouldn’t load up on too much furniture and stuff right now. You don’t want to pay to move a bunch of stuff and it may not work in the apartment you end up in. It’s going to be a lot of fun creating your own home! Thrifting and getting stuff off FB Marketplace will also help you get to know your new city.
I just got this couch on Amazon for $300… it’s perfect for just me. My boyfriend and I are long distance and his grandma ruined the old couch when she was here “helping” him move. 🙃 https://a.co/d/283Ykol
Enjoy your shopping, get what speaks to you. Don’t absolutely love it? Pass!
That said, many divorces start out friendly and amicable but don’t stay that way. Please have your ducks in a row and be smart financially and with your assets – ensure you aren’t underestimating the cost of replacing furniture or anything.
My tempurpedic mattress was the best purchase of my life. I recently had to sleep on someone else’s mattress and literally needed OxyContin spin waking, it hurt so much.
Also, think about Facebook marketplace/craigs list for free/cheap furniture right away. That way you can take your time in finding what you really want.
My first apartment after my separation was my safe place. It was more my home than I had felt in a long time. I did buy this great dual reclining couch and a very comfortable bed with such soft sheets. Picked up functional kitchen and bathroom supplies from TJ Max and Marshalls.
I loved scoring random finds on Facebook Marketplace. Financially, living there absolutely killed my finances, and had to get a part time job on top of my full time job, but it was mine. All mine.
I like society six for anything you might want a print on—rugs, curtains, shower curtains, etc.
We just picked up our dining set and dresser at our local habitat for humanity restore. Their furniture selection seems to be better than Goodwill, but cheaper (sometimes) than Facebook marketplace. I think I got the dining set and the dresser for 230 all together? Anyway, if you have one near you, I highly recommend checking them out!
I unironically love IKEA and I will die on this hill. A lot of their things are really well designed with multiple uses. Like this little bench thingy that I put at the entrance so I can put my shoes on, but also stores stuff and can be a night table 😀
Joy about utility intensifies
Oh, I also bought a modular couch so that it can be taken apart for transport and added/reduced seating as required.
