I am not against the death penalty, especially when there is indisputable evidence, but sometimes think it would be better for a person to suffer behind bars for 40 yrs instead of being put to death, but this had me thinking. Do those who want people executed immediately for a crime, do so, because they think the criminal will then spend eternity in Hell?

Some certainly do, others just view as an “eye for an eye” type of deal like you killed someone so now you die
Depends on the person. Some do, some don’t, and some think it depends on whether the person repented.
The ones who are members of a religion that includes a belief in hell probably do, yeah.
But there are people who support the death penalty who probably don’t believe in hell.
Taxpayers (me included) shouldn’t be forced to support a killer/rapist/child molester until they die behind bars
As someone who wants the death penalty for criminals such as pedophiles, serial/mass murderers, school shooters, etc., I don’t even think about them going to hell. I just want them out of our societies and prisons permanently. The longer they’re around, the more damage they do, even in prison. I’d also prefer to offload them to another nation that doesn’t have the death penalty and believes in rehabilitation if they truly believe in what they say.
This is not about societal vengeance, this is about deciding if an individual can be redeemed and made useful for society if he spends enough time in jail.
Execution shortly after conviction is for the purpose of swift justice, not to “make sure they go to hell”
Regardless how you personally feel about the death penalty, there is no practical reason (in principle) to have someone sit on death row for 40 years, by that point any surviving family members of the murdered could have passed away and the criminal outlived them
Justice delayed is justice denied
Also, let’s suppose that Breivik, the murderer of 77 people in Oslo, is only going to serve 15–30 years in prison and is living in a prison comparable to a 4-star hotel — do you think that’s fair?
If it were up to me:
You steal? We cut off a finger for each theft you commit.
You kill? Death sentence.
You like killing lots of people? Then first torture for a certain period, and then the death penalty.
The criminal does 40yrs maybe, but the tax payer does 40yrs too. Just end him and be done with it. Its faster, cheaper, reduces over crowding in prison
Many people are pro retribution even if we get it wrong occasionally (and we do)
In Islam all worldly punishments including the death penalty are expiation for the sin so they won’t go to hell on account of that particular sin.
I’m atheist, so of course not. I just want them forever removed from this Earth.
Funny how people who believe in the concept of hell also believe Thou Shalt Not Kill…
Religion is the epitome of hypocrisy.
