Do the different color heart emojis really have different meanings?

r/

I’ve been watching that new show “adolescent” on Netflix, and in the 2nd episode, a teenager told the main character that each color heart emoji has a different meaning, like, yellow is “I’m interested” and pink is “I’m interested but not in sex”. Is that stuff really true?? I always thought it was just different colors for people who like other colors than basic red

The colors is different, The red heart can be sent to a woman, The men on the other hand cyan heart can be better to show friendship with. This is my opinion. I am not expert especially when I only use the pop emoji. so yeah…

in my friend circle it’s not true at all. i send the pink hearts because they’re cute!!! i’ve never seen anyone use the other coloured hearts

I’m an old teen and I haven’t noticed this. I don’t use emojis, but my friend likes to use the yellow one for basically everything.

I’m around 20 and in my circles the different colors don’t mean anything, it’s literally just aesthetic preference. One of my friends uses the anatomical heart 🫀

I’ve never heard of that, sounds like the show just trying to be hip with the kids. I use different colored hearts because I like the color.

I’m 22. The closest I’ve seen is that sometimes people use the non red or non pink hearts just to be clear that it’s not a romantic thing. Like, signing a message off as 🩷 could be seen as romantic whereas🧡 is more distinctly just a sign off. Most of the time thought it’s an aesthetic choice, no hidden meaning.

They’ve been saying this for decades. Gel braclets used to mean girls did things to guys to get them, and it was colour coded. It’s all just made up to induce moral panic

Not a teenager and was never a social one but no not really. Like I’m guessing some friend groups will have different connotations but it’s not a solid thing

Never in my life have I ever heard that. It sounds to me that they’re making things up.

I have heard some of the hearts have different emotional meanings, but clearly most people use whatever aesthetic they happen to like. There are some groups of people who definitely use them to convey something in particular, but that closed group of people know the code. I compare it to the “rules” florists use when discussing sending flower arrangements. Red roses are romantic love, pink carnations are something else, white roses mean something, some flowers are distinctly “funeral.” But outside that closed group of florists, the rest of us are just out here sending and receiving the flowers we like. Use whatever heart emojis move you. But do be careful about the fruit and vegetable emojis you send 😂

The only time I’ve seen a specific colour heart emoji used as a meaningful gesture rather than just “I like purple!” is in support groups for illnesses. So in the endometriosis support group the “awareness colour” is yellow, so people there tend to send yellow hearts within the group, in fibromyalgia groups it’s purple, ME is blue and so on. But even there a lot of people just use their favourite, whatever that is.

Considering Roses colours have different meanings, I wouldn’t be surprised if people do start associating different purposes to the coloured hearts. However that being said, it would require some form of agreement amongst the community using them to keep some consistency, as I’m sure you wouldn’t want to end up going to university sending a heart to someone and suddenly finding you sent the wrong ‘message’

Purple male friends, pink female friends and family, red for lover.

Anyone remember gel bracelets? This gives me flashbacks to those….

    Simple answer, no

I asked my 15 year old nephew about this after watching Adolescence and he had no idea what I was talking about.

I use the purple heart because it’s my favourite colour. It’s really that deep I think the show just made it up for drama’s sake

  18. CrashBase Avatar

I like to use the light blue and brown because I like them

  19. Aurawa Avatar

On tiktok people use them to identify dem or repub

This is probably old, but I was taught that

    💙 Friendly heart

It’s like the jelly bracelets all over again lol

In Germany, the far-right AFD party uses blue as their signature colour. The blue heart is used as a dogwhistle for support for this party.

I feel like the takeaway is that teens or any subgroup have vocabulary that means something to them, and outsiders won’t get the deeper meanings or subtle implications. Anytime adults write teens the actual lingo isn’t going to be accurate.

I watched that series and at first i thought its just the younger generation thing and its silly. But my group use same color heart emoji to their oshis (just otaku term of who you idolize) to show support. This idea also happens in politics or supporting a cause like black lives matter, i believe

shows with teenagers need teenage consultants.

i guess something like this could exist but it would be specific to a friend group or school. there is no teenage club where they all discuss these things.
