I have seen in movie and show saying ‘see you at dinner at 6pm’. Do you really eat dinner this early? If yes don’t you get hungry around 10pm while scrolling reels? Or is it a name for something else?
Damm thanks guys for responding. I’m surprised so many people in the comments have work so early so yea this dinner time makes sense, Thankss gg
Comments
I do, or even earlier. As for being hungry at 10, I have to get up early enough to get my kid to school that I’m asleep before 10 most nights.
Yup, give or take an hour and you’re probably reasonably within a standard deviation.
You might be hungry again later and have a light snack. Or, be like me, and make utterly irresponsible choices.
Yes or even 5pm.
i do.
i’m not up at 10pm scrolling reels. i’m in bed.
Sometimes we eat dinner at early as 5:00, other days as late as 7:00.
>If yes don’t you get hungry around 10pm while scrolling reels?
I’m not sure what “scrolling reels” means, but I’m rarely still awake at 10:00 PM.
Eating dinner at 6:00 is not really considered early here for most people.
I eat dinner at 4-5pm and am in bed by 9
6:30-7 is usually when we have supper.
As a teacher who starts the day early yes I eat between 5:30 and 6:30. I don’t like to eat close to bedtime. I’ve always been an earlier in the day eater.
Yes. Most Americans are hungry after getting off work. I’d hate to get off work, then wait five hours and then eat.
Yes. You must be from Western Europe ☺️
Dinner is our biggest meal of the day, so we can last longer without eating afterwards. But we do also have dessert haha
Yikes! 10 PM is not dinner around here for anyone I know. Maybe a late snack? I leave for work around 6 AM. Lunch is at 11:30 AM. I’m hungry by 5ish but we eat around 6:30 PM usually.
Yeah, it’s a pretty comfortable time to eat – typically around sunset in the winter and a couple hours before sunset in the summer – perfect for a post-dinner walk when it’s cooled down to the 90s. I’m rarely hungry late at night.
We have dinner anywhere between 4pm and 6pm in my house. My husband and I are old and boring, we are in bed by 9pm most nights. Staying up late for us is 10pm. The kids wear us out, our boys are feral.
I prefer 7 pm. If I leave work at 5 pm sharp, I generally get home by 5:30. Getting in and set up, then cooking dinner usually takes more than a half hour.
I prefer to eat dinner even earlier if I can.
Yes we get hungry at 10 and that is why we invented DoorDash
We’re all over the place. Dinner might be anytime between 5 & 8, depending on how the day is going.
Sometimes we do, if we want to have dinner before our toddler goes to bed. A lot of times we have it just after she goes to bed (she obviously eats earlier) around 7:30/8.
6 wouldn’t be considered a suuuper early dinner time here. But I do feel that 7ish is more common.
Im asleep by 10pm
When I worked we ate dinner between 5:00-5:30 and I was in bed at 9:30, I had to get up at 4:45am for work. Now I don’t even eat dinner, I only eat breakfast and a later lunch
I eat around 7, have a snack of fruit around 9, and am in bed by 10.
Just curious what time do you get up and go to bed in your country?
I stop eating at 5PM and usually eat again the next day around 11 or 12.
It’s not really good for you to eat a full meal at 900p or later, then go straight to bed. And as a lot of us have to get up at 600a or earlier to get ready for work or get the kids rolling, not many in those categories are staying up past midnight.
Lots of people do. We eat around 7-7:30ish.
So OP, what time do you eat dinner and go to bed and wake up in the morning? And going four hours without a full meal is really considered a huge burden where you’re from? Is snacking not an option?
(I’m asking genuinely!)
Yes, as a family with school aged children, we eat between 6 and 7.
School starts at 7:20, so the whole house is up by 6. Kids to bed between 8-9, I’m in bed by 10.
6 PM is pretty normal, though it depends where you live to some extent. It would be considered slightly early here in NYC, where I’d say the average dinner time is more like 7 or 8 PM, and it’s socially acceptable to sit down for dinner anytime until about 9/930 (though that is fairly late). Growing up though, my parents in the suburbs would always prefer (and still do prefer) dinner at around 6 PM. Only retirees really eat dinner before about 5 or 530 PM – you’ll often see that restaurants have special deals at 3 or 4 PM for dinner, and that’s typically for elderly people who eat super early.
Between 5:30pm till 7pm is the average dinner time
Sometimes
I wake up at 330 am everyday to open my store for all the other people who get working early, none of these people care what time foreigners prefer dinner.
We eat dinner around 5pm or 6pm or 7pm or 8pm or 9pm. At times it might be 10pm.
peace. 🙂
I have a 2 & 4yo. We eat dinner at 430/5 and are in bed by 9pm 😂
Yes, compared to most of the world, Northern Europe & the Anglosphere do things earlier in the day, whether it’s sleeping hours, meal times, or working hours. Definitely a culture shock for a lot of our South American and Southern European friends in particular.
Yes I eat around 6 but I’m getting ready for bed by 9 so I can be asleep by 10, and trying to get up again by 5.
When are you doing these things?
Bro I’m in bed by 10.
We eat at 5
I work 7am-8pm shifts when I’m on day shift, so dinner at 9pm is kind of a necessity.
My parents usually ate at 5 because Dad worked a physical job and was usually pretty hungry at the end of the day. With my family we generally eat around 6-ish because my job isn’t as physically demanding as my Dad’s was. And the evening snack is also a thing though I’m trying to make it as healthy as possible it doesn’t always work out that way.
Yes, around 6pm. I try to have 4-5 hours of time between my last meal and bed time for sleep quality.
Nope. Between 4-5pm. I have bad reflux and if I eat any later than that, I wake up coughing in the middle of the night. I used to eat later, but now that I eat early, I actually prefer it. I sleep better.
That’s my secret, Cap. I’m always hungry.
Yes, for sure. Then I don’t eat for 12 hours at least (this includes sleeping, so whatever). I’d say 6 is probably the perfect time for dinner and anything after 7:30 is waaaay too late.
Yes every American sits down at 6pm, pledges allegiance to the flag, and eats a fast food meal.
Dinner’s between 5-8 for most of us. If we’re hungry at 10pm we’ll have a snack…or just learn to eat more at dinner.
No, I eat dinner at 3:30 pm and go to bed at 9 pm. Wake up time is 5:45 am and lunch is 11:15 am.
I eat at 8-9 pm, when I’m actually hungry.
We always ate at 6:45 when the kids were young. As we get older, with just one child still living here, we are slowly reverting to our previous 7:30 – 8:00 dinner time.
I eat dinner around 9:30am most days, with breakfast around 7pm and lunch about 3am depending on how busy work is.
But yes, for most families 5-7pm is normal
I eat dinner at 4:45-5 pm, because of intermittent fasting.
5pm
Sometimes we even eat dinner at 4:30.
I eat “dinner” whenever I get home from work and that could be at different times, depending when i finally get off work.
It depends on the family and their culture.
I grew up in the US and ate dinner at 8 PM (hispanic).
Now I live in Spain and eat dinner at 10 PM.
I do. Eat a light dinner at 6pm, in bed by 930pm, up at 4am to go to work.
Why is 6 seen as early?
Eat at 6, chill out and bed by 10. Wake up at 5
I’m the odd one here, but no, I don’t – if I ate at 6pm, I’d be hungry before bed.
I eat dinner around 8:30 – 9 pm, usually.
Between 6:30 and 7. I don’t want to do all of the work of cooking and clean up after remotely close to that late.
6-7 pm is normal, yes. Lunchtime is typically 12-1, so that’s around when you’d be getting hungry again (maybe had an afternoon snack too, maybe not). Some people eat a snack at night between dinner and bed, popcorn or chips or ice cream while you watch tv. 10pm is a pretty typical bedtime, so a lot of people would be going to bed by then and not have time to get hungry before bed. A lot of people don’t like to go to bed on a full stomach (causes indigestion, heartburn etc), so eating several hours before bed is seen as a good thing.
On the other hand, I don’t see how people wait until 9-10 pm for dinner 😂 wouldn’t you get hungry long before then? I guess the answer is similar, you have snacks. Unless your lunchtime is also very late compared to ours. It also seems unappealing to go to bed right after dinner, on a full stomach.
Depends on the job you have. Office workers who work 9-5 jobs will generally eat between 6 and 7 during the week. Those who do not have a ‘traditional’ job will eat whenever they get home from work. So while you do have the core group of people who tend to eat at that time, there are a lot of people that have dinner at other times of both the day and night.
The general rule of thumb for most people is to have ‘dinner’ within an hour or two after getting home from work, whenever that is.
I’m not sure what “scrolling reels” means but I’ve eaten dinner around 5:30 or 6pm my entire life. I suppose I’m hungry at night but not hungry enough to eat another meal.
One thing American TV shows lie about is what time work starts for most people. They always show people rolling into their jobs at like 9 or 10 AM and that is not reality. Most of us have to be at work at 7 or 8 AM, which means most of us are up and getting ready by 6:30AM. That means we go to bed earlier than most countries (in my experience).
Hell no. I eat at 5
Hubs and I eat dinner between 5-6 most nights, sometimes a little later. I’m virtually never hungry at 10pm. That doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally nibble on a dessert around then, but that’s a sweet tooth thing, not a hunger thing.
Our portions tend to be substantially larger than other parts of the world, however.
We eat dinner at 4:30pm during the week. My children get home from school at 4pm and usually have to be at their respective sports/activities between 5-6pm. If those activities go til 7pm we wouldn’t be able to eat dinner until maybe 7:30pm. I don’t know about you but I hate going to bed immediately after eating and, with a 4:30am alarm to get my exercise in, it is a must that I’m in bed by 9pm.
Yes. At 6pm, I’ve been up for 13 hours. I’m hungry and after that im tired
Yeah. I usually eat about 5 and I’m in bed between 9:30-10 since I have to be up early in the morning.
We always chuckle at people on Below Deck telling the chef they want dinner at 9:30 or 10.
Even on vacation, that’s well past our bedtime.
My shift starts at 0600. Luckily, I have an 11-minute commute, so I can stay up until 2045 and still get 8 hours. So yeah, dinner at 1800.
Not unless I’ve skipped lunch. Dinner usually 7-9 but I also go to bed around 11 most nights
Typical traditional workday ends at 5. Eating dinner anywhere from 5 to 7 I would say is pretty normal. Most people eat dinner pretty soon after they get home from work.
American dinner tends to be the largest meal of the day, so you’re usually not hungry after. Some people do have late night snacks or “midnight snacks,” but I wouldn’t say it’s necessary for everyone.
Usually I eat dinner at 6 and then stay full until breakfast.
I’m flipped because I work nights but I wake up at 6PM have to be at work at 8PM get off work at 7AM. I’m in bed by 10AM.
I eat breakfast at 6 – lunch at 12 – dinner at 6 and then if I’m hungry again between 7 -10 I’ll grab something.
Probably most of the country. NYC restaurants reach peak business around 8 pm though.
I do because my ass has to be up at 5am. If I’m awake at 10pm it’s an emergency.
There are a lot of people in the US.
We don’t have a national mandated dinner time. You eat dinner when it works best for you.
Some eat dinner at 6pm. Some at 4pm. Some at 10pm. Night shift folks eat dinner in the morning.
But, yes, between 5 and 7pm is probably the most typical dinnertime.
I don’t eat at 6, I eat at 5. Then I go to bed exhausted. I work 12-14 hours so my dinner time reflects the inflexibility of my work schedule.
My work does not afford me a flexible schedule in which I can afford the time for leisurely, multi-course meals. It’s not just meal times that are affected but socializing, entertainment, and relaxation are not as available to me as someone who has more control over their daily work or a job with better hours.
Get hungry around 10pm while scrolling reels – i.e., fooling around on the internet … YEP. That’s why we have Taco Bell, for Fourth Meal. It’s like a Hobbit’s Second Breakfast, but for American college kids.
Joking aside, Americans start work earlier than elsewhere and work longer/harder during the day. Lunches are often only 30 min unless you’re on salary and in a comfortable position. Also, you need to get home if you’re out for a meal. There’s no walking home – in the big eastern cities transit can take a long time, if you’re in the suburbs then you’re driving after dark. If you’re anywhere else, you’re driving anyway. And you gotta get up in the morning, bright and early.
Yes, between 6-7pm is standard (I’d even eat earlier on my own, but wait until my husband is home from work) because we have to get up about 6:30am for work. I don’t like going to bed too full and generally try to get to sleep between 10-11pm. I never feel hungry before bed on this schedule.
Keep in mind American work schedule is such that we basically work 8-9am until 5-6pm with *at most* a one-hour lunch break around noon (but often only 15-30 minutes to grab something/eat at our desks or otherwise on site.) I know the culture in other countries is much different, like in Italy with morning hours of maybe 10-1pm and then 3 or 4pm-7pm. There it makes sense to have a larger lunch and then not eat until later in the evening.
What country are you from, and when do you typically eat dinner? Also curious how bedtime, wakeup times, lunch time, etc also differs.
Yes. Some of us have dinner even earlier, especially senior citizens in retirement homes.
If you live and work on a farm or ranch, getting up before dawn is very common, sometimes as early as 3 AM. A 6 PM dinnertime is pretty normal for such folks, and bedtime is usually around 7 or 8, maybe as late as 9 PM. Breakfast is anytime between around 4 AM and 6 AM. Lunch is around 11 AM or noon.
If you’re hungry just a few hours after eating, you’re probably not eating enough, or you’re eating Chinese food. A couple of dinners of chicken fried steak with country gravy and some biscuits or cornbread, and maybe some peach cobbler for dessert, will keep your belly full until morning for sure.
Here at night people sometimes go out to a movie, talk to friends by phone, watch television, walk, etc. Because we tend to do evening/nighttime activities, we eat earlier.
5:30, but I also have young kids 😵💫 sometimes I’ll just feed them if I’m not feeling dinner that early and I’ll eat later after they go to bed.
Yeah, we eat dinner between 5 and 7. If we get hungry again later we make popcorn, or have leftovers. But I don’t like to eat right before bed, I prefer to eat early in the evening and then be done.
If I eat dinner at all, its by 4pm. I get up at 3 to start my day and in bed by 7-8,
I wake up around 4am and in bed by 9pm so I prefer eating dinner around 530 as long as I am home but if I have to wait until after 6 I usually just won’t eat more than just a small snack
Usually. Depends on whether we decide to eat out or not, we eat earlier if we go out.
6pm is perfect because I work the night shift, and if I’m off, that’s about as long as I can put off eating after sleeping all day.
The dinner at 8-9pm thing does not play well with my acid reflux.
I usually get started cooking around 6 and have dinner around 6:30-7:00. My bedtime is 9:30 so I’m sleep by 10pm usually.
I’m Dutch on one side and American on the other. Both my Dutch and American relatives eat around 6-7pm. This is not uniquely American.
6 is late.. I’ve been asleep for an hour or two at 10
My family in NYC eat dinner very late and stay up very late. But she has an atypical lifestyle of entertaining clients, running around the city for work, etc.
I typically get hungry at 5-7 because I’ve had lunch at 12-2. If I go to the gym right after work, then I want to eat after getting home and showering. Sometimes we do eat as late as 9 on those nights because I have to get home, shower, clean, then cook dinner.
I eat breakfast at 5am, my scheduled work lunch is 11:00am, so I eat dinner at 4:30. I don’t really eat much food from 5pm to 5am.
You can never eat too early or go to bed too early. 400pm to 600 PM. I go for hour walk early morning like 2 or 3 AM then eat breakfast around 400AM brush teeth take nap if needed then begin day 600am lunch is early around 1100am with snacks in between. I sleep early couple hours after dinner. Works good for me but am retired in my 70s so can do whatever I want, take naps anytime.
Most Americans start their work/school days early. Anywhere from 5-7pm would be considered an average dinner time depending on your schedule. I work from 7am-2pm, so my lunch is at 11:30. This, combined with hungry kids who get home from school around 4 means we try to not eat dinner later than 6pm.
Yes, if I’m up late enough to feel hungry again I just drink water, or eat some dinner leftovers.
Yes, we eat dinner at 6:00. I got to bed at 8:30 because I have to be up at 4:30 a.m.
I work till 10:30pm most nights, but I still usually eat dinner around 7
I grew up eating dinner early, and I try to serve it between 6 and 6:30 pm in my own household. For a while it was a little after 7 pm, when my husband worked late.
I always found it easier to cook immediately upon return home from work, or generally before I tire out for the day. Then a quick cleanup and kick back and relax!
I usually do eat at around 6:00. It fits our schedule of breakfast around 7:00, lunch around 12:00 or 1:00.
We eat late. Usually 8 or 9. Still have not adjusted to the time change, so it is closer to 10. I am going to try to shift it back earlier and hopefully go to bed earlier. My regional manager tries to be in bd by 9 or 9:30 so she can read and honestly that is one of the most impressive things I’ve ever heard of. I’m a night owl and don’t get nearly enough sleep.
No, and I don’t understand how it’d even be logistically possible for someone working a “9-5” job, which in the modern era is typically 8:30-5:30.
I eat breakfast while I start my work day. I have lunch around 2pm. I get off work at 6. Most evenings, I have a dance class or practice starting at about 7 or 7:30 and going until 10:30. Then I eat dinner.
On Mondays and Fridays, when I don’t have dance class/practice, I’ll probably eat a little earlier, like 9.
If I ate dinner at 6pm, I’d be too hungry to sleep when I got into bed at 1-2am.
I eat at 5 or 6pm. By 10pm I’m already asleep
Yes. Dinner at 6pm. Homework/reading/Ipad time or play outside. Showers at 8pm. Kids in bed or room by 9.
I usually eat at 8pm. I only eat at 6pm if I skip lunch
Growing up dinner was around 6:00-6:30.
Now that I’m older and cook for myself, dinner is around 6:30-8:00
10pm would only be 4 hours. If that’s your threshold and your eating dinner at 7pm, does that mean you ate lunch at 3pm?
Dinner at 630. A little snack at 8. Try to be in bed by 10 & not have a full tummy. It works for me
I eat dinner between 3:00 and 4:00.
Thsts when I eat dinner. I don’t like to go to bed with food on my stomach.
I know a lot of people who eat that early and I don’t understand. How are you not starving when you go to sleep?
You’re not starving at 6pm? Breakfast at 6-7am, 5-6 hours until lunch around 12pm. Another 6 hours to dinner at 6pm. 6 hours from there would be midnight, and I’m fast asleep. 10-1030 is usually bedtime.
We eat at five, lol
Remember that we don’t have siestas, and 1+ hour lunch breaks are more uncommon than common. Most people only get 30-minute lunches (if that), and don’t have time to go out for lunch, or eat a huge meal. It’s usually something quick, fast, and can’t always be calorie heavy. The short breaks also mean we don’t usually have a chance to take a mid-day nap. We often have to get to bed early and have a full night’s sleep if we want to get through the next day. If you’re a typical 1st shift adult worker over the age of 25, you’re in bed by 10 or 11.
7 or 7:30 used to be normal for me, but since I had a kid we started eating at around 5:30 so he can be in bed by 7. I do get a little snacky at night.
I get up for work at 3:30am so I eat early so I can go to bed.
With our kids sports schedules, we often eat 5:30-6:30ish, or we wait until 8. It’s not ideal, but otherwise they don’t get to eat before leaving for their sports practice. Of course that’s constantly evolving and in 2 weeks, one of the kids won’t get home until 7:30ish, so it may all change
I don’t but I should. I get up at about 5:00 and go to bed by about 9:30-10.
I get up at 3:30 am. Do chores. In the gym at 5. Hit the road at 5:45 for an hour-plus commute to work at 7 am. Done at work at 3:30 pm. Another hour-plus commute. Chores 5-6 and dinner about 6:15. In bed by 7:30 to 8 pm.
6 sounds typically about right. There’s no way I’m conscious at 10 pm.
Yes! LOL. It’s crazy when I traveled to Spain or Italy they eat sooo late! Even in Mexico they eat late too.
At least in Italy, I can go apportivo.then have dinner later!
It was brutal when I traveled for business, and colleagues would invite me out to dinner! Are we going right after work?
No Gringa, we will pick you up at 9:30 pm at your hotel, We have reservations at 10.00 pm. Hell, I’m on bed by 10!!!
I’m British and that’s pretty similar to us. Between 6pm and 7pm.
I would estimate most eat between 5-7, depending on when they get done with work, of course. Dinner (the last meal of the day) is often the largest in the U.S. and it’s not good to go to bed full of food.
I wake up at 5:30am and get off work at 4:30 so yeah
I have to be up for work at ~4:30am and I’m usually not getting home until ~4:30pm (16:30) so yes I usually eat basically as soon as I I get home, workout, and I’m usually in bed ~7pm
