Do you have to wash your hair with shampoo?

r/

My brother told me that you shouldn’t wash your hair and if you leave it your hair will clean itself naturally – is this true and can someone please explain

Thanks in advance!

Commenting so I can find the answer too. But my guess is that your hair doesn’t naturally clean itself. But the oil is not necessarily bad to have either?

You should wash your scalp with shampoo – use conditioner on the ends/length.

You don’t have to wash your hair with shampoo, but you do have to wash your hair in some fashion. Shampoo is a relatively new thing, and came out in the late 1800s. So there was a whole lot of time before that without shampoo.

There is a sub called r/nopoo if it’s something you actually wanted to try. Just be sure to read the subs info bar, as you can’t just stop washing it with shampoo and that be your routine. There’s many methods from water only with mechanical cleaning, ACV washes, cowashing, etc.

Your hair will not clean itself naturally. That’s just not a thing at all. You’ll end up with greasy hair that everyone around you will notice and smell.

Ask him – what exactly is the mechanism your hair uses to clean itself? Your scalp excretes oil and then… That’s it. More oil forever. It never cleans up the oil.

If you don’t want to have a greasy head, you need to wash your scalp. Depending on your hair type, you condition the rest of your hair, or leave the rest alone entirely.

The oil is good for the hair and scalp, but it’s got to be removed periodically. I’m a hairstylist…The smell coming off of my clients who do not shampoo regularly is….well, not pleasant. Be mindful of how you smell.
