Do you think Haiti is Latin America?

r/

If you look at the rules of this sub, you can see a map that says Haiti is in Latin America. Is Haiti in Latin America? I wonder what you think.

In Haiti they speak French. French is a Latin based language. I think they’re definitely in Latin America.

    American perspective to your question

    Kind of?

Haiti’s population is descended from slaves and French people so in a very literal sense they are latin as French is one of the Latin ethnicities.

But culturally I don’t think there are many people that would consider Haitians Latin in day-to-day conversations on the subject. The term carries additional colloquial meanings outside of the standard definition.

I personally think it is, in fact, the reason why it’s called Latin America in the first place is because of them since they are the only country that speaks French, which like Spanish and Portuguese, has “latin roots” if not it would be only Ibero-America and historically they had some connections to our regions independence too. But of course the language and cultural barrier with Ibero-America is somehow pretty important so I guess that’s why sometimes it’s left out of the conversation when discussing LATAM.

Yes, by definition, but I find that Haitians typically don’t associate with other Latinos in the same way that Brazilians do despite also not speaking Spanish, so they usually feel a bit more foreign

By all Latin Language definitions of what translates into English, Haiti is “Latin American”, though Anglos define that term differently and tend to exclude Haiti, probably because they don’t like admitting the French are Latins

I mean, their country goes to shit after the US Government keeps fucking with them by installing and ousting governments over and over, it literally just happened in the 2020s.

    Nothing more latinamerican than that!
