Latin America is anything but united and friendly towards each other, bud.
Fuck no.
We are similar, not united
If we are talking about Individual persons then yeah I would say friendlier than most
Yeah, we bark a lot but we usually dont bite. We absolutely hate each other tho.
What exists in Latin America is Aporophobia from my point of view.
Well we haven’t try to kill eachother for a while so id say we are better than the middle east and some regions of Africa. But we aren’t that united at all, just because we don’t go to war against eachother doesn’t mean that some countries didn’t tried and still want to.
We’re fuck up in every corner so it doesn’t matter
It doesn’t take a lot to be less hostile to each other than the Middle East. I don’t take it as a sign that Latam is united, more as a sign that the Middle East (and maybe some parts of Africa) is excessively adversarial and conflict-prone.
But unfortunately, I’d say no. The more I participate in Latam communities, the more it feels like a bunch of different countries with different types of resentment that often like to pick on each other (or even kick each other while one of them is down).
Being colonized under the same European makes it easier for LATAM to form connections compared to other places.
United? Maybe not. Friendly? Sure. International conflicts feel like they don’t really happen, the last one on this side of the world was between Ecuador and Peru in 1995 and even then, it was more of a skirmish. It helps that most of the countries this side of the world are dominated in the Spanish language.
At this point in time, the continent is on “nothing ever happens” mode. Every once in a while you’ll hear about Argentina saying they want Falklands again or Venezuela saying they want Guyana again but it’s all just talk. Not even threatning talk either.
Well they’re certainly not trying to exterminate one another.
We should but we are not united, our advantage is that religion is not as divisive as in other parts of the world, mostly catholic area but not too indoctrinated.
It’s far from being perfect, there are some underlying hostilities here
But Brazil and Argentina trusted each other enough to sign the only bilateral nuclear peace treaty in the history of the world (yes, this treaty is very unique this way)
So it’s already something
We are like those siblings that usually hate each other but DON’T YOU DARE DOING SOMETHING BAD TO MY BRO! Only I can do that 😤
I would actually say yes. Also, I feel some people here are not taking into consideration what you’ve asked and are just emphasizing the fact that we are not “completely united” or something.
Not really united normally, but if a “gringo” messes up with our “hermanos”, we tend to care more than in other parts of the world. Also, we tend to gravitate towards each other when in foreign territory.
Then we meet at the stadium when our countries are playing football against each other and there may be pretty heavy language.
Also, Africans and Middle Eastern people are not all at each other’s throats. Living in Europe, I saw “regional” gatherings with Kenyans, Nigerians, South Africans, Namibians, etc., sharing common foods and general culture, as well as Syrians, Lebanese, Palestinians and other Arabic peoples gathering like us and our African brothers.
But I agree that resentment against colonialism is the main cement in this. In Europe, it may be a reaction to the xenophobia of certain people: better to get strength in numbers before a nationalist gang tries to attack us.
No absolutely not. At least not more than Middle East and Africa. We dont go to wars between each other nearly as much as they do.
I mean, most of us dont actually want each other dead nor are actually openly warring with each other, so I’d say yeah
No . Everyone attacks and judges each other.
I remember seeing a documentary on why Latin America is actually near perfect for avoiding constant wars and that’s because of geography. Basically nature decided South America fairly well. Amazon forest keeps populations on the coasts same with the Andes Mountains. The Pampas is a fertile land that is perfectly situated and protected. Every region of Latin America forced either side to cooperate or avoid senseless wars. This is only improved by the commonality in languages and cultures which makes it easier to communicate and avoid conflict caused by language.
Latin America isn’t perfect, but in terms of geography it’s better than Europe, and Asia to avoid conflicts. Resource rich, relatively good temperature that creates people that don’t want to constantly fight each other. See Europe being farther North and nowhere as resource rich as other parts people had to have conflict to survive and retain power. Asia also has similar issues and while the Himalayas and the Caucuses keep people divided they also create resource scarcity and water issues.
The Middle East is lacking lots of water resources and prone to drought, while the deserts keep people divided the lands that are fertile are highly sought after and prone to war between people and regions. Be it for resources or security.
The Caribbean islands naturally create natural barriers and the larger islands breed cultures that don’t need constant war the only issue is the lesser Antilles that forces them to raid the greater Antilles and coast lands. Central America is divided by dense jungles and deserts and while Mexico territories breed need for more violence for resource management it isn’t as extreme as in Europe and Africa as well as Asia.
Africa is deeply resource rich, but divided by the Sahara and Congo jungles and this extremes forces cultures to clash for resources, especially when outside pressures for the Nile River, Congo River and resource secure areas and Lake Chad is declining which force resource clashes.
North America is near perfect for resource management and security, but also to force people to war for what can be secured. The only reason North America has an empire that rules the best regions within the North American continent is because of technology, but should USA collapse the region would be prone to war between regions based on resources. Though not at the same extreme as Europe, Africa and Asia.
Australia? It’s largely desert and grassland with a jungle area on its edges. Not much to war for and the animals of Australia make it difficult to live and to also challenge nature. So people have to live carefully and focus on living on the coasts where large numbers can be sustained.
Latin America simply was blessed with high resources, natural barriers and by coincidence enough hegemony to avoid needless conflict and that doesn’t mean wars can’t or won’t occur, but moving troops and equipment through the Amazon, Andes and even through the continent is just not worth it and raiding the coasts is only profitable for so long.
We’re united with the rest of Central America. With the rest of latam no as much.
We just don’t want to genocide each other for religion, ethnicity or nationality
We have mostly cordial relationships with each other
Someone once said that Latin America is too poor to actually go to war with each other.
i think the only time we’re united is when we’re against some global north country, and even that is a bit of a stretch cuz there are obviously some boot lickers with inferiority complex
Middle east? You chose that as a example of people being friendly towards each other???
Literally the most ununited region
Short answer: no. Long answer: noooooo. Nah, but seriously, we’re not very united. There area a lot of petty regional rivalries, and some genuine grievances that keep us disunited. From personal experience, both offline and online, there is a lot of shit slinging between each other.
Less than Europe but of course more than Asia. For Africa I’m going to say that during the cold war there were several conflicts but now I think it’s better. Africa has several conflicts inside countries but not that many from country to country, so I guess it’s similar now.
I mean we throw shade at eachother but irl my only beef is with the US state of Florida.
Oh they’re united alright… by their hatred for Venezuelans.
No, discrimination against Venezuelans are mutually the same in the western hemisphere- similar vibe as how middle eastern & Africans are treated in Europe.
