What was it like living in the LA area while Richard Ramirez was at large? Do you have any personal stories about him? Do you think that Richard Ramirez killed out of hate or for the sake of hating people for no reason? I’ve always wondered if he was pure sadistic and vile or if he had some kind of Mental illness. Did he actually practice Satanism?

I once overheard part of a podcast chronicling his life.
He did suffer some brain damage from at least one incident during his childhood which knocked him unconscious. He had a horrible upbringing, with his biggest influence being from his murderous older cousin. He was a drug addict, was said to have schizoid personality disorder, and was involved in Satanism. All of this before the age of 15.
He was one messed up dude.
Yes.
I’ll likely be your outlier here.
He was just an broken and abused kid and a drug addict who grew into a rabid animal. I know people revere their image of him, but it seems comical to put him in the same group as those who worked more on a pattern and were methodical in what they did. And it’s been many years since I looked into Ramirez, but I always felt that his killings were secondary to his need to rob a place to get more drug money.
He was just a beyond hope rabid kid that should have been put down when they caught him. Don’t get too caught up in the pentagram palmed kid in the court photo, look back at what a mess their life was.
I recognize his name and I think I even remember his face, but I can’t remember what he did off the top of my head. So no, I PERSONALLY wouldn’t consider him one of the worst serial killers. I don’t think David Parker Ray is necessarily the worst, but his tapes haunt me just a bit. Albert Fish is another one that’s really hard to stomach. Don’t get me started on Peter Scully who is probably the most infamous to me personally, although I’m not sure if he qualifies as a serial killer or not.
Far from it… ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Albert fish creeps me out more
It depends on your definition of “worst.” I think he was among the most pathetic and disgusting, sure. Although that’s a pretty long list.
I don’t really care to know more about him or his motivations. He was a waste of oxygen regardless.
Asked my ex who lived here during the time. He was about 8 at the height of the crime spree. To quote, “It was scary.”
That’s all I got.
As for his motivations, nature or nurture… he did have a brain injury as a kid which is common in serial killers, but he was also influenced as young boy heavily by an uncle (or older brother?) that had done time in Vietnam and showed him pictures of his rape and kill victims.
I think people like Ramirez are the very exact and unfortunate blend of nurture worsening someone’s nature.
And, he believed he practiced Satanism, but he was doing the cheesy movie version. Real Satanic churches aren’t actually doing sex ritual or sacrifices living beings. They’re mostly about protecting the right to defend yourself and your property if provoked and fighting against the legal hammer of Christian radicalism.
No. I would vote for Albert Fish, David Parker Ray, or Luos Garavito
What “Worst” do you mean? If you mean unorganized, completely random, chaotic and virtually unpredictable, yes, he was, his upbring, drug use, and mental illness made him like others said, a rabid animal. If you mean “worst” as in the most vile and sadistic, absolutely not, far more have done far worse.
