[Doctor Who] Can Time Lords regenerate into something less Time Lord looking?

r/

To what expand Can Time Lords regenerate? Can they regenerate into less humanoid (Time Lord?) looking creatures and if yes are they limited to races with a similar Body structure and biology (like Ood, Sontaran) or can they becomes even less like that ( for example: Axons, Krynoids, Wirrn,Senorites)?

I think Romana was messing around with that when she regenerated.

Absolutely. Baker era Romana was experimenting and one of her regeneration forms was an alien.

Yeeeeees, technically, but in much the same way that human children can “mature” into coma victims. That is, it can happen, but it’s not exactly a normal part of the process or something people want to happen.

Regeneration can go wrong in a variety of ways – genetic defect, sabotage, poor health, bad luck- and one of those ways is regenerating into a non-humanoid form. But that is the regeneration going wrong.

A healthy regeneration always produces a time lord.

One of the first things the Eleventh Doctor ever says upon regeneration is “Good, I’ve still got legs!”, implying that regeneration into a form that doesn’t have legs is possible.

Yes, absolutely. When you Regenerate, you can choose what species you want to Regenerate into. Gallifreyans just happen to be remarkably similar to humans. The people of Gallifrey find this to be a bemusing coincidence that we also evolved to look so similar to them, if memory serves.

The Doctor said, if need be, he could Regenerate into another species, particularly if the environment was hostile to his current form, but he could only do that when he was Regenerating. He couldn’t change species on a whim.

And while they could Regenerate into a bird-man, or a fish-man, or an Ood, or Sontaran etc, they’d still be a Timelord and have Timelord core biology.

I don’t know about the other ones, but here my best guess. As for Axons, I’m going to say no, since they’re a sort of hive-based shapeshifter.

Krynoids, possibly, but they wouldn’t do so willingly because they’re so fragile and can only live in a specific kind of environment.

Wirrn, they could make a pseudo-Wirrn that just looks like one, but I doubt they’d copy the whole infesting others reproductive cycle or gain many Wirrn special abilities.

    Sensorites, I’d say yes.

When 9 was regenerating he said “I might have two heads. Or no head!” but it’s possible he was joking.
