Does anybody have weird stories when it comes to animals while being pregnant?

r/

As in, if you have any pets (or somebody around you had pets) while pregnant, did they behave differently towards you? If so, do you mind sharing the details?

My friend is pregnant and my horse is very interested in her. He likes to stand near her with his nose gently touching her belly. He is an old guy and we joke that he is excited to be an uncle.

I got pregnant unexpectedly many years ago and at the time I had two dogs and three cats. They were all affectionate towards me normally but before I realized I was pregnant they were glued to me 24/7. Everywhere I went in the house it was like I was leading a parade. As my pregnancy progressed most of them calmed down except for one of my dogs who became reactive to strange men when he had never been before. The reactivity ended when my pregnancy ended and he was never like that again.

I couldn’t walk my dog while pregnant because he became aggressively protective of me. Like would lunge and growl at anybody who came within 6 feet of me. Happened with him during both my pregnancies but he went back to normal after both (he’s otherwise never been aggressive or reactive).

He and a dog I had who passed away also knew something was wrong because for two days they were SHOVING their noses in my crotch. I went to the doctor for a checkup and my daughter was tachycardic and I had low fluid so my dogs must have known I had a amiotic fluid leak. It was so slow I didn’t notice any excess moisture down there.

My late cat I think may have known I was pregnant before I was. But very early on in my pregnancy, she built a weird little nest out of socks and stuff under our bed. She had never slept under the bed before, and never slept there again after my son was born and it wasn’t until much later that I realized she was probably building me a “nest” to have my “kittens” in! She was always a friendly, cuddly cat but while I was pregnant she was OB-SESSED with my belly. She would drape herself over it, make biscuits on it, cuddle right up next to it. My son was an active baby in utero and he would kick her all the time, but it never bothered her- she would look down at my belly, and then kind of shrug and snuggle right back up against it. She actually was cool towards the baby when he finally came home, mostly kept her distance for the first little while but then would lie close to him on the floor and sleep in his room. I never let him handle her roughly, and she was always incredibly gentle with him. She died suddenly of a saddle thrombus when my son was 2.5; he’s 4 now and still talks about her.

Yep, one of my cats knew before I did when I went into labor. She was found feral and not normally a cuddler. She was a bit more affectionate when I was pregnant – sitting next to me. The baby kicking freaked her out a bit – so she wasn’t normally on me. Just close.

One morning, I was sitting on the couch eating a bowl of cereal before I had to go into work when all of a sudden the cat gets very affectionate. She was all over me – purring and rubbing her face on me. Couldn’t get close enough. And then my water broke. Her behavior was so completely out of character I’m convinced she knew.

My friend’s maltese went INSANE barking at my stomach when I was pregnant, way before showing etc.

Yes. One of our two dogs became weirdly protective of me when I was pregnant. He normally hid behind my legs when strangers approached or even knocked on the door, but started standing in front of me and would growl and raise his hackles whenever someone became loud or aggressive.
