I’m not even in college and it just feels like every year it’s a trend for men online to shame and laugh at sorority girls for posting recruitment videos.
It feels like women can never just have fun.
These ladies put effort into coordinating and producing these videos and while they might not be my cup of tea, it’s nice to see their teamwork and that they are having fun.
Comments
Men tend to hate seeing attractive women that they know they can never get. They also tend to hate seeing women in better positions than they are, in this case educated and happy with a large group of friends. So they devalue them, their actions, and their accomplishments as a way to try to make it seem as though they are not more successful than the men are. Because God forbid, women be more successful than men.
Sounds like a social media thing.
Honestly I won’t be defending extremely wealthy people engaging in wealthy people behavior. I don’t care if they’re women, the amount of money these ladies are paying to participate in the Greek life could feed my family for a year. They’re fine.
I get more annoyed seeing that these racist, classist, misogynistic organizations persist.
No, these organizations specifically don’t get my sympathies.
I see both men and women in the comments of those videos, which are stupid by the way. All the sorority girls look so plastic and fake. They all look like clones of each other. I’ve never understood why people pay for friendships.
So…I don’t care if people make videos. It is absolutely hilarious when they all copy each other so much that every recruitment video looks identical except the greek symbols have changed. I would make fun of that regardless of the gender. I laugh at that for the news, too, where you can track the regurgitation of forced news stories by the exact phrase repeats they do.
Montages of identical things that are supposed to set you apart and show how you are unique is very funny.
Their efforts for recruiting or the girls themselves should not be laughed at.
When everyone’s marketing is identical and they all use the same ads to sell the same kind of product, it is hilarious.
But also, people should be allowed to respectfully criticize regardless of gender.
As a non-American, they just seem like clubs for generic looking white women. Maybe there’s more to them than that but 🤷
Yes and no. I personally don’t like them because they are usually sexist, racist depending on where you are, classist (thousands for what??), and again depending on where you are homophobic. Men make fun of sororities because they are sexist.
I’ve been a target of that type of girl’s “teamwork and having fun.” It’s not fun for everybody.
Though I do like cheer teams and dance teams for their dedication, technical skill, enthusiasm and precision, I’ll pass on sororities. Too much vapid and mean spirited nonsense, and I can get that from watching Fox with my dad.
I am a college professor. One of my colleagues oversees the school newspaper. A sorority girl submitted an op-Ed article about how the (Insert name of) sorority isn’t bound by DEI practices anymore and how it’s wonderful for everyone all around. Their sorority can keep a ‘certain aesthetic’ and the ‘DEI people’ can have their own sororities. I can’t give anymore specifics because I don’t want to out anyone, but it was gross. Like, a full segregation-is-best vibe.
My colleague did not accept the article because it would have been a shit show and it was poorly written.
But, yeah. That’s all I am thinking about as I see these videos op up on my feed. That some of these groups are probably glad they can all accept the same white-Texas-pageant-queen type.
I’m a recovered sorority president. Those organizations are anti-feminist and patriarchal to the core. They shouldn’t exist
I’m not sure that’s man exclusive. You’ve got racist organizations doing the most cringe dances in an attempt to convince people to pay money for friends.
Lots of people are going to side eye those videos. Lol
The conformity of the hair, outfits and dance are just overwhelming. its like wow… so much blonde.
Nah, sorry.
Sororities are the same shit as fraternities, and I hate both with a vengeance. Anything that contributes to tearing that system down in its entirety I welcome with open arms.
A broken clock is right twice a day. These men are chronically online, yelling at women for not being depressed lonely losers like them. It just so happens that that sororities deserve the smoke. They’re just a social club for racist, rich, popular girls that aren’t self aware enough to realize a house full of women just like them is a recipe for disaster.
It’s not about girls having fun, it’s about the gross misogynistic hierarchical classist structure these sororities create and uphold. I’m in an SEC college and most of the top sororities wont even let you join if you aren’t pretty/skinny/white/cishet enough for them. And if you’re accepted as a minority, it’s because you’re either a diversity hire or “one of the good ones”. Those things are rich people cults.
They’re cults.
nope. I’ll get downvoted into oblivion but you’ll never get me to feel sorry for a bunch of privileged, wealthy white women. Never. I don’t cry for billionares either.
As long as no one is threatening physical violence or harm, I’m not bothered.
Those videos give me the creeps.
greek life deserve to be made fun of
Really, it’s the videos that annoy me, along with the existence of sororities (and fraternities).
White sororities uphold racism and patriarchy. I’m happy to see them get belittled. They are racist to their core
No one ever gets up in arms about Black American sororities and frat life because it’s inclusive.
No. I think Americans need to step outside their culture for a sec and see how weird some of these cult-like rituals are. All those “greek house” groups are weird, creepy, gender normative, and often racist and violent. Those recruitment videos are deeply perverse rituals of gender performativity. I know that many men mocking them are probably coming from a place of sexist intent but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a very valid feminist critique of those videos that exists.
Those videos are confusing. They would make total sense if someone were recruiting for the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders but they don’t have much to do with young women getting an education.
Definitely agree that this happens every year, but tbh the narrative that I am seeing on X this year is from white supremacists saying that these sorority videos are proof that “America is back.”
Yes because they’re laughing at them for all the wrong reasons
I lived with some sorority girls while they were doing recruitment. Absolutely insane situation. Fuck em
Men hate what they can’t access.
They hate what they CAN access too.
Men are unhappy no matter what.
I think about all the girls they rejected and probably bullied during recruitment and I don’t feel too bad for them.
Honestly, perspective from outside the USA? Fraternity / sorority stuff is toxic to the point of being baffling.
This post didn’t go the way OP wanted.
Nah, they are annoying AF and these girls are super mean rich girls, pickmes who live for male validation and side with the abuser when frat boys rape someone, racist and vote red, fuck em
People have hated sorority girls long before tiktok. I get annoyed seeing the videos, hope they have fun but I don’t care.
Nah, those types of people would hate crime the shit outta me, they can handle some online criticism
I haven’t seen anyone make fun of “sorority girls” for posting videos. I’ve only seen the videos shared on reddit and frankly, they are off-putting and stupid to me.
You’re dreaming if you think these videos are about “women just having fun.” They are about money and influence and conformity. (Chapters and individual officers get rewarded, often financially, for recruitment.) You’re projecting your own ideas about “fun” into what you see.
Alt opinion (ironic to call it alternative considering topic lol) :
Greek Life probably saved my life. Helped me see myself as someone who could be smart, beautiful, social, happy. Changed my life when I could have gone down a darker path.
