I think after 1 DWI maaaaaybe you should just, I don’t know, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE? I have no sympathy for those who get MULTIPLE DWIs. Anyone who kills a person while drunk driving deserves life in prison. Take a life, get yours thrown away in return seems fair to me. Honestly after 2 DWIs 6 months prison MINIMUM. Maybe more like a year. If you still can’t get your shit together and just NOT drive drunk, which isn’t asking much and get 3 DWIs? A decade for each DWI. And mandatory blow to drive to drive your car FOR LIFE (whatever those things are called).

I don’t think this is unpopular
In my home country the first time you are caught you automatically disqualified from driving for a year
Fuck it, 3 DWIs and license is permanently revoked with no chance of getting it back.
I grew up in a home where drunk driving is normalized. I was headed down the same path as my father until I had a friend tragically die (and kill an innocent) in a wrong way drunk driving wreck.
I don’t know if throwing decade prison sentences is feasible, just logistically, but the pervasiveness is terrifying.
Car Seat Headrest has a phenomenal song about it that resonates very strongly with me.

I think the amount you blow should also factor into play on punishments. Someone who had 3 beers compared to 20 all classifies under DWI.
My dad almost died from someone driving on the wrong side of the road, under the influence, going 80 on a 20mph road. For context he was driving a Kia, she was driving a Jeep.
She got her licensed removed and she gave my dad a lot of money in a civil case. He was inches away from dying, and even though he survived he suffers from heart issues (having previously been the peak of health).
He’s essentially a different man around cars now, someone who used to be fearless suddenly shakes when he’s in the passenger seat, and I don’t blame him. If it was up to me she would’ve been put behind bars.
Nah, it is quite shallow and biased. Distracted driving is as dangerous, and half people are on their phones while driving. Also same goes being tired, sick, under medication etc. And the punishment is concentrated on intoxication only.
Also some people being sober are more dangerous (reckless, rage driving) than many drunk peaceful ones.
Also another dimension is level of intoxication and behavior pattern. In US there is no separation of punishment depending on how much you are over legal limit, as 2 beers and 10 shots of whiskey are also quite different. Same goes for behavior- it is quite different if you are drunk and feeling extra bold and bit over limit returning home peacefully
This isn’t unpopular except that as a society we’ve made a drug part of our culture. We use it to celebrate and mourn, weddings and births. It’s built into western culture. Having super harsh penalties could affect that link and most folks don’t want that.
I don’t know what the solution is but we have ample evidence that incarcerating addicts isn’t a successful policy.
Lemme make this unpopular for you.
Unpopular Opinion: people should be allowed to drink and drive or get as many DUI’s as they want.
If I wanna drink in my car it’s my right to
Depends on the level. .08 really isn’t that drunk. I’ve tested it. lol. So I agree with the penalties they give for that. But those assholes pushing .2?! They should be charged with attempted murder.
Did anyone see the video of the lady that was getting sentenced for ten dui? She got smoked got like twenty years.
The only reason this isn’t a thing is because judges, celebrities, ceos, politicians, law enforcement, etc drive drunk. They would be affected by these types of laws so the laws aren’t made.
If it was predominantly poor people who were drunk drivers then you’d see these kinds of laws passed swiftly.
There is a scaling penalty the higher you blow, the damage done, the higher each is the worse the sentence at least where I live
OP will think this a great idea, until they get arrested, charged, and convicted of DUI, all while being completely sober. Cops are POS and will arrest sober drivers just as easily as someone who can barely walk.
Moving violations in general aren’t penalized well. Fines should be enough to punish without being crippling; flat fines are generally low enough that the wealthy are functionally immune. Periodic re-tests should be mandatory for all drivers, and come more frequently for repeat offenders.
Increasing penalties has diminishing returns. If you double or triple the penalties, you won’t cut the amount of drunk drivers by half or a 2/3. If the goal is to actually reduce the amount of drunk drivers on the road, the community needs to make a converted effort to make it easy for people to get home after a night of drinking: free public transportation in the evenings, subsidized taxis/Uberslride shares, and an awareness campaign to make everyone aware of there resources. Simply increasing penalties is a lazy politician’s solution that doesn’t actually fix the problem.
In my state the first DWI isn’t even a criminal offence and after 10 years, if you get a 2nd one, that doesn’t count as a criminal offence either.
That said, 100% of the people I know with multiple DWIs have alcohol dependency issues. May of the people I know with only 1, ended up blowing right at the limit or like a .09. They tend to become overly cautious and don’t reoffend, even if the punishment was very minimal.
I feel after a single DWI you should have your license revoked and forced to take the driver’s test again. It’s not a perfect solution because I know several people who drive without a license, but it’s a start. Throwing someone in jail until they sober up isn’t a strong enough lesson, even getting a ticket for it rarely stops someone from repeat offending. I see obviously intoxicated people driving home from work all the time and it feels like the cops in my area just don’t care. One guy was swerving in and out of 3 different lanes and there was even a cop pulled over checking people’s speed, but the guy who can’t stay in a single lane for longer than a few seconds is completely fine. No reason to stop him at all.
As someone who’s been arrested for it, I agree. It sucked. It’s a lot of time and money and dumb court stuff but it’s barely punishment and doesn’t deter the crime. I had to take a class and had a guy speak who had like 13 of them in the 80’s and 90’s because it used to be a small fine and they sent you on your way. So at least they’re more aggressive most places now.
I think every vehicle should be equipped with an interlock device that doesn’t let you start your car if you are .08 or over.
I dont disagree, but I do think that the punishment should at least be relative to how intoxicated you are. The fact that someone who blows a .2 get the same charge as someone who blows .08 is rediculous.
Drivers don’t get harsh enough penalties for the laws they break.
All cars should be required to have breathalyzers,, no matter who the driver is
