Location: New York.
Today this dude started banging on my door, i didnt answer because i don’t answer the door for unknown people. He then tried to open my locked door with some force, he walked away and went inside the house upstairs and down the basement steps of the opposite side where there is another locked door that connects to my apartment and then tried to open that one. He then basically proceeded to talk through the door and impersonate the electrical company saying he needs to read the meter, which then switched to “i need to take a picture of it”. I never opened the door and spoke through the door, i said “im not letting you in here and im pretty sure you trying to open my door is illegal, give me a phone number to send it to and ill take a picture of it”.
He gave me the number and i sent the picture, then he starts talking about how there is a leak from my apartment he needs to “investigate” (another lie), to then saying we have to have a talk because hes been hired to renovate the apartment and i need to move out. Landlord was there upstairs the entire time but refuses to communicate with me.
During all this i found out he is a literal civilian, nobody in any official capacity. I told him i dont talk to people who bang on my door with so much force that my curtains came down and illegally enter when i didnt answer. What if my door wasnt locked? This dude could have walked right in on me. If i then hurt him would i be in trouble? I told him “idk who you are but take it to court then, you cant just randomly come trying to make lies and break in” Should i report this? Is this illegal?
