ELI5: how does the respiratory system of birds work?

r/

I’ve looked this up multiple times, and something isn’t clicking in my brain. Can you break it down step by step, and also includes the significance of each part? This way, hopefully, it will fill whatever the missing part is in my brain.

We have lungs that are open from one side. The air flows in and flows out by the same way.

Birds have lungs that are open on two sides. The air flows through them. They also have two sets of air sacs.

When a bird inhales, one set of air sacs is filled through the lungs. And the other is filled directly. When it exhales, the second set (the one that has fresh air) is emptiet through the lungs and the first one (with the air that went through lungs on inhale) is emptied directly.

This way on both inhale and exhale fresh air goes through the lungs.

Bird respiratory systems are unique. Birds have a very efficient respiratory system with air sacs that allow for unidirectional airflow through the lungs, maximizing oxygen uptake. This is crucial for their high metabolic rate during flight. Imagine breathing in, and the air travels not just to your lungs, but also into air sacs throughout the bird’s body. Then, when they breathe out, fresh air from the sacs flows into the lungs. This constant flow of fresh air is what makes their system so efficient for flight.

Birds have 1 stiff lung and 2 sets of air sacs that can inflate and deflate. The air sacs act as bellows and there’s one set in front (cranial) and one set in back (caudal).

    Bird breathes in and
air flows through lungs for air exchange and afterwards fills the front air sac
air also fills the back air sac

    Bird breathes out and
air from the front air sac (has already passed through lungs) leaves the bird
air from the back air sacs flows through lungs for air exchange and leaves bird

Breathing in, fresh air goes into back air sack. Fresh air also goes through lungs and into front air sac. Air sacs are now full. Front has stale air, back has fresh air.

Breathing out, stale air from front air sac goes out and fresh air stored in back air sac goes through lungs and out.

    Rinse, repeat.
