ELI5: What does a person who works in risk management in banking do?

    A few things:

    Makes sure the bank isn’t getting involved with anything that isn’t 100% above board

    Checks the soundness of anything the bank would invest in. As in, no to crypto, yes to federally backed bonds, maybe to this or that mutual fund (after they check the history)

    Protects the bank’s reputation against getting involved with unpopular things, like certain political movements or brands.

    I’m it IT, and OUR risk folks makes certain of things like security and outside attacks through vulnerabilities but I doubt that’s what you mean.
