As the ice melts, arctic trading routes will be probably the most lucrative to control also Greenland is a hub of natural resources and Denmark isn’t investing enough to its mining infrastructure (according to trumps team).
Prob the access to Arctic resources, the Northwest passage, and possibly climate change.
In not to long a time (decades) it’ll prob be ice free. Lots of fresh resources to tap.
The Arctic ocean is only going to be more navigable and for longer as the climate destabilizes.
Here is a shot in the dark someone else mentioned elsewhere: maybe more habitable in 50years, and most of the continental USA will be much less habitable
Geopolitically, it is a major gateway to the Arctic and guards the primary access point to the Northern Atlantic (from Russia) which may become more of an area of contention in the future. It has also always been a major first line of warning and/or defense for the USA. Presumably the US wants to build more ports and airports and radar warning systems there too – militarily speaking.
Ships are growing larger than the Panama Canal can support, so a northern Euro-Asian shipping route is highly desirable. Control of Greenland would project control over significant portions of that route.
Further, Greenland has significant mineral reserves that are largely untapped.
Look at a globe of the Earth. If that link doesn’t work, go to Google Earth, zoom out, and look at the north pole. Greenland is in between Russia and North American. While I cannot speak to minerals, oil, and other natural resources; it’s a very obvious strategic location when you aren’t looking at a Mercator projection. We have the Mercator projection stuck in our head that it’s also hard for us to see why Anchorage, Alaska has one of the busiest airports.

Melting ice revealing oil/gas drilling opportunities.

Greenland is very resource rich, and can act as a staging area for control of the northern regions of the Atlantic sea.
It is politically important because America is threatening one of its closest allies because of it.

Climate change. Republicans may deny it exists, but they fully plan to exploit it.
Probably going to to be one of the few habitable places left on the earth.
Ridiculous, insane ranting by the Comrade Cheetolini.
