ELI5: Why are stray dogs more likely to chase you when you run?

r/

Are not running supposed to be an impression to them that you are rather not a threat and would like to leave the heck of their “territory”
they are barking for.

If you are running they see you as a prey animal. It’s similar to how you aren’t supposed to turn and run from bears or mountain lions.

Regular dogs are too. It’s because you’re seen as an interesting fun thing because you’re running, running is fun for dogs, so follow! Think from a dog perspective, of things they can do, what is fun? Then keep in mind playing catch, playing with toys etc are limited with strays

Unfortunately some stray dogs can also be aggressive, just like regular dogs too.

You are exhibiting prey behavior and the old instincts kick in for some. Some also just want to play.

I think their old hunting/carnivore instincts are triggered by something running away, same as dogs will chase cars, which are obviously not normal prey items.

Dogs have a natural instinct to chase things and also assert dominance.

Typically it will trigger their ‘prey drive’ (same reason a lot of dogs like to chase a ball). Only prey would run away, therefore you are prey if you run.

Like a lot of dangerous animals it’s best to face them and leave slowly
