ELI5: Why do people sometimes cry when something really good happens?

r/

Like when someone wins a medal or sees a loved one after a long time, they just start crying, even though it’s a happy moment. What’s going on in the brain or body?

Crying activates the bodies parasympathetic nervous system, which helps bring breathing and heart rate back to a normal level after a sudden spike.

Intense feelings of joy can trigger crying specifically because it often causes similar physical symptoms (raised heart rate, increased breathing, etc) as does sudden feelings of intense sadness.

Crying is basically the body’s physical expression of emotional regulation, so any intense emotion can cause crying.
