Experience w Alfalfa Butterfly swarms?

r/

Lots of the US they have alfalfa fields, so have you have had experiences with these butterfly swarms, and if so, what did you associate them with?

I’m not from an alfalfa growing area so I’ve only seen them once or twice on the highway and don’t have any associations with them.

I understand what all of those words mean, but when you put them together in that order I have no idea what you’re talking about.

I don’t think we have a lot of alfalfa. Maybe ask Canada?

I don’t even know what alfalfa really is. I definitely have never seen a butterfly swarm.

Ok, so in the rural parts of the state we have a bunch of alfalfa fields and yes, there are butterflies in them. I haven’t personally seen any swarms though. I’ve moved pipe in many a field… Just a beautiful green field with butterflies, bees, and other insects.

I live in alfalfa country, and I do see these (or at least sulfur butterflies, I’m not great with butterfly ids) but never in swarm form. I love bugs so they bring me joy. I can’t wait to start seeing some butterflies!

I live in a very rural area, actually have some alfalfa fields. I have never seen what I would call a swarm of butterflies. We have a lot of butterflies in the summer, painted ladies, the yellow and white things, and the occasional monarch. But I dont think I have seen a proper swarm.

Im not super sure what you’re asking, but I have spent a good amount of time in rural northwestern Nevada and have experienced this. At least 4-5 times driving next to alfalfa fields, just plowing through clouds of butterflies. They’re like a pale yellow/white in color. Windshield wipers up. That’s all I have to share.

We put up roughly 10,000 square bales of alfalfa and 500 round bales of grass a year. Butterfly swarms are indeed a real thing. But much less in size over the last 20 or so years.

What do I associate with them? Lower yields from damage from their caterpillars.

We used to feed our animals a lot of first and second cut alfalfa. There were a lot of dead butterflies in that alfalfa.

I’ve never seen an alfalfa field or a swarm of butterflies.

Had to look them up, and, kinda? Not swarms, but they’re abundant to the point where certain times of year everyone has one or two stuck to the grill of their car.
