Anyone else have a similar thing with their parents or siblings? My younger brother is 27 and lives at home with our parents (I moved out and bought my own place years ago). They still all rent and only have about £3k in savings between them. As they’ve always rented, they’ve moved home every few years. At every place, they become extremely hypervigilant of their neighbours to the point of knowing exactly who lives next door, who their extended family are, and any conversation they are having in the street to the point they have huge stories to tell about what the neighbours are doing/thinking/etc.
They’ve got security cameras that capture the front and back of their house and on the rare occasion they are away from home, they will always log into the security app to watch what the neighbours are up to like it’s a live stream of TV show continuously for ages.. e.g. neighbours setting up a family birthday party in their own garden etc. and my brother will say things like it’s a shame they’re away from home if he sees on the app that neighbours are having a party (as they’ll miss out on seeing the neighbours party through the window) so basically he’d rather be watching the neighbours through the window than being out and about.
Even when they’ve visited me, my brother will run down the stairs excitedly to tell my parents if he discovers any “drama” on the camera live stream like a relative visiting them or a party being set up or having a builder around. Whenever I phone my parents to talk to them, every 4 mins (not exaggerating!) my brother will be interrupting the call to tell them what’s going on with the neighbours.
My brother has completed a couple of degrees but only ever worked minimum wage jobs, no hobbies aside from neighbour watching and binging netflix (watching the same show several times), never exercises, never reads books nor does any charity work, doesn’t speak to anyone except the family and has never dated anyone.
They’re very “good” in terms of zero alcohol, never smoking, no drugs etc. but this behaviour still seems odd.
Anyone else have similar thing with their family (especially siblings)?
