Fan casting is weird and stupid

r/

There is more to casting than looks. Way more. Throwing a bunch of A-list actors together because you think so-and-so looks like how you imagine this character to look is cringey and weird.

This is particularly true when it comes to the backlash about Bella Ramsey being cast in the Last of Us. Ellie is supposed to be 14. Grown adults are mad that they can’t sexualize the character anymore. These same adults are not mad that Pedro Pascal looks nothing like Joel from the games. People are fan casting Ellie, insisting that so-and-so would be a better choice because she looks like the game character. That’s so weird and annoying and cringey, and these people need to touch grass.

    She’s 19 at this point.

I was a little irritated that neither Ellie nor Joel look like their game characters. But that’s completely overshadowed by the fact that Pedro and Bella were the perfect casts for the rolls they have. Honestly can’t imagine anyone else doing those roles. Appearance or not, they did the characters justice.

It’s really not that weird for people to prefer the character looks like the character being adapted it doesn’t really have much to do with sexualizing Ellie.

There was a backlash when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker; a lot of people thought it wouldn’t work.

Best to leave these things to the professionals.

Okay but thats only because you haven’t heard MY ideas/j

But seriously, Elijah Wood as Moleman is right there

Welcome to the world of gamers, the saddest cohort of humans to ever walk this earth.

Not being able to goon to female characters is these days a real complaint. Just today someone was upset at the “defeminization” of a tree character in Oblivion.

Sure, a lot of this lunacy is rage bait, but a lot is this bizarre entitlement that came to light when the world of gaming started expanding around the turn of the century.

Fancasting is just supposed to be fun. I personally like doing it specifically for my own concepts for stuff. Yes, a lot of people don’t look deep enough, but at the end of the day, people are just trying to have fun, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I mean, it’s not really possible to fancast unknowns.

In my opinion the show Ellie looks like Doug Heffernan but I’m not invested enough in it to actually care.

But you know you can just not look at stuff you don’t want to see? It’s cool that you find it weird but there’s nothing wrong with people being superficial when it comes to that stuff. I just assume whoever casts people for shows knows what they’re looking for (more or less) so those fancasts won’t happen anyways if they’re not a fit in the casting persons eyes.

Nothing wrong with someone crushing over imagining an actor in a certain role

People are big mad that an actress doesn’t look like their fantasy animation, it’s weird to be that attached to a drawing. It’s very much based on looks as comments are more forgiving about Abby’s casting because the actress is more conventionally attractive despite her also not looking like the animation in the video game.

Fan casting doesn’t necessarily mean just picking the person that looks the most like the character, its about picking the person a fan believes would do the best job at playing the character. As for issues with people sexualizing it, that’s something that is not unique to fan casting unfortunately.

    I agree with this.

It’s still several notches less cringe and pathetic than shipping, but it’s up there.
