I wanna see if anyone agrees with me on this because everyone online is giving it so much praise. Am I crazy or was the plot so bland? Every characters lines were so boring, there was no synergy it looked like each person was filmed separately then edited together. The final fight was dumb, some of the acting was a snoozefest (except pedro he’s a good actor). Visually it looked great though. anyone agree? I just think it doesn’t deserve the praise and hype it’s getting. maybe people are just starved of a good marvel movie so they’re easily impressed, and i say this as a big marvel fan

Upvote for extraordinarily unpopular opinion
So, multiple Batman/Superman/Spider-man movies.. yeah, I can mostly get on board with that… multiple Fantastic 4 movies? Seriously? The comic wasn’t even all that interesting when I was a kid… what is so special that it warrants four or more different versions?
It definitely felt like they wanted a tone very different than any other MCU movie. Very “Tomorrowland” or even “2001”. I enjoyed it, but not for the reasons I’ve enjoyed other MCU movies.
It was definitely a very forgettable and highly predictable story. It felt like nothing happened.
this isn’t THAT unpopular of an opinion
Some random Brooklyn women falling in love with a giant rock monster was kind of hilarious to me
I mean, no matter what it’s EASILY the best Fantastic Four movie. Extremely low bar, but still, it blows the others out of the water. But I’ll agree it’s not the best superhero movie out right now (it’s Superman).
I thought it did a great job showing fear, determination, and heroism. But the quips were bad, and I thought Reed was an idiot to tell the masses about Galactus’s offer. It was also dumb that Sue was able to turn an angry mob with a speech. Otherwise I thought it was a good movie.
Yea I rated this 1 and a half stars on my letterboxd. The writing and script were very weak and it did not explore any interesting concepts. It also was very event driven but the events didn’t hold any weight for me because the characters were underdeveloped. Also, for me, the comedic moments didn’t hit.
It’s straight up terrible. What the fuck were they thinking when they made the human torches main power translation?
..and I paid imax for that crap
Super disagree… I don’t think it met the levels of depth or world building some other really solid superhero/ comic movies have… but I felt like it was a solid comic book movie.
Easily better than the last two attempts at the franchise.
My Unpopular Take on this Movie is that Galactus is very disappointing to me that idk why does everybody suddenly praises this.
Yes, it’s a huge upgrade from the last Galactus Cloud, but still not The Galactus that actually eats planets.
This one is just as big as a building, barely used his telekinetic powers (should’ve used it back on his own ship), and can’t create portals that he ended up getting stuck at the edge of the universe.
The ending would’ve made more sense if Galactus is a true Unstoppable Force that the F4 can’t win, and the only way they could survive is to jump to Avenger’s Universe. But since they didn’t do this, Doomsday will start with barely any build-up at all.
Mr fantastic genius idea was literally Patrick’s “Lets take Bikini Bottom…and push it somewhere else!” idea.
Dislike Pedro. They could have put a cardboard cutout in his place.
Johnny learns languages in a few hours? wtf
The baby as mcguffin seems design to keep a longer storyline alive and that took precedent over making actually great movie.
Way better than previous incarnations but not particularly good.
I hate most superhero movies and liked this one. Was happy it wasn’t just boring fight that’s like every other movie over and over.
Way overrated. It was watchable but that’s it
It was awful, thank you for saying this
They cut John Malkovich from it that’s why
Would not say terrible
It’s just a mediocre whatever movie
Decent if we go with the marvel rating Board from p4 to this Phase
Thunderbolts is also only a good p3 movie not more not less
If it didn’t have the 1960s aesthetic, it would be the most boring generic marvel movie ever. it’s a basic coat of paint to make it seem different than your regular capeshit.
Wasn’t horrible, wasn’t great
Would’ve been much better without Franklin imo
It was good but not great marvel seems to have forgotten how to do the awesome action scene still
I agree completely.
I am baffled at the praise this movie gets. I thought it was terrible.
I had a long conversation with a friend where we talked about all the ways that it was bad. That conversation lasted longer and was far more enjoyable than the movie itself was.
It was a snoozefest
It was better than the 2010s Fantastic Four movie, but still meh. I think the 2000s Fantastic Four movie is the best of them.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but it’s impossible for me to be truly objective since I’ve been an FF fan for 50 years. I’ve seen bad FF movies in the past (three of them, in fact). This wasn’t a bad movie.
It was boring and I didn’t get invested at all. I’m surprised it was so well reviewed.
Honestly it was just really boring, also Vanessa Kirby has that Botox face that shows no emotion so when that scene where she was using her powers to her limit, and she was supposed to be trying her hardest , she had a model face going on.
It was a movie. A fantastic 4/10 in my books .
I agree, fant4stic was terrible
Didn’t have as many silly one liners that Marvel movies usually have. I say it was a step up from their usual product.
I enjoyed it well enough for what it was, but I also don’t disagree with most of what you’re saying. It’s a movie I can’t see myself ever watching again.
I haven’t seen it. I have no opinion.
Yeah it was a fantastic bore
Fantastic Four is just kind of lame in general.
“The final fight was dumb” a family fighting to save the life of their baby (ultimately the earth) yes very dumb.
It passed the hideo kojima test of expanding on his review so yeah you might be crazy
I see a trailer for a superhero movie, and I have zero desire to go watch it. I don’t understand who these movies appeal to. Keep in mind, I have never read comic books.
The aesthetics were nice but it was formulaic and really quite dull in places.
Slightly unrelated but looking at the replies- it’s just the same old “superhero fatigue” complaint.
I’m just sick of the “I’m tired of superhero movies” crap that people keep saying. If it’s not your cup of tea then don’t watch them.
If they’re simply just tired of seeing them everywhere outside of self-interest, like ads and unrelated conversations, then I get the point. But otherwise why?
What is Marvel gonna do instead? Make romance movies? The complaint makes no sense.
Terrible take, it’s the perfect Fantastic Four movie. Maybe to someone who has no idea about the FF they might not like it as much.
I think people have lost track of the difference between “not a waste of time” and “good”. Fantastic Four was fine. It did some things well. Some things not well.
The pacing was weird in that every scene had to propel the plot forward with the exception of two scenes with The Thing and Natasha Lyonne. Nobody was given any time to breathe. The Galactus stuff oscillated between being different and being completely generic. The Silver Surfer was a complete waste as she just didn’t have a lot to do to really make an impression. The whole sacrificing the baby for the rest of the world thing was clunky and the entire planet(minus Doom) waiting around for the FF to solve all of their problems seemed like a wasted opportunity to show some growth.
The bottom line is that it was a decent way to kill a couple hours, but I’ll probably never think about the movie again. It left me with nothing of substance.
The movie was pretty ass, much prefer the 2005 version
Super boring, the characters are awful, barely any action. They took all the fun from F4 and superhero movies as a genre.
I just kept thinking these people should not be in charge of a baby! Just one bonehead decision after another.
Oh the latest shitty movie in the milquetoast superhero genre that just needs to die already wasn’t good? Shocking.
I gave it a 6/10. Superman also wasn’t much better.
Thunderbolts was the best superhero movie this year.
I liked the aesthetic, I liked it was self contained, I liked that it had a decent if as you say a bit bland plot, I liked the characters, and the general vibe.
Was it a great film? no. was it a good start for the team to be introduced and set the tone for them? yes.
its a solid foundation to build upon.
It was well-acted, had great production design, and had very fun action set pieces (especially the part with the Silver Surfer chasing the Fantastic 4 into a black hole).
Otherwise, I felt very meh about this movie. I didn’t particularly like it, but I didn’t hate it either. The story was bland and predictable. There weren’t really any character arcs that helped me care about any of the characters. Reed starts off anxious and neurotic and ends anxious and neurotic. Ben felt very much like a side character. He meets a girl he likes and then… meets her again. Johnny is a quippy smartass (we’ve never seen that in the MCU before), and Sue becomes a mom and fights evil with the power of her love. Groundbreaking stuff.
People keep giving this movie praise because it’s better than the previous movies, but that’s a low bar to clear. People are also excited about the characters feeling comicbook accurate, which is cool but is also a low bar to clear. I’m not a reader of these comics, I don’t remember the 2000s movies very well, and I’ve never seen the 2015 version. So, I don’t have the context of poor adaptations to colour my opinion and justify giving a passable but weak movie so many passes.
I think people will come around on this like they done with No Way Home in a few years.
I loved the way this movie has two super powerful characterizations of the divine feminine with Sue Storm and Shalla-Bal. It wasn’t the best comic book movie of all time, but that particular aspect really worked for me.
I thought it was great, I think people who don’t like it are overly critical or just hate fun lol, I still believe Superman was better though.
Especially compared to the other Fantastic Four movies which are dogshit
Terrible, not at all. But it was definitely a slow burn.
I honestly enjoyed the phase 4 movies more. But I’m just happy that people are praising a marvel movie
The idea of moving earth into an entirely different universe was just downright nonsensical. The plan to have galactus stranded millions of light away from earth without his ship was good enough.
The film was about family, love and empathy for others over being only concerned for self combining to defeating a force of nature, temporarily.
It delivered.
Though it had its bland parts, I really enjoyed the movie.
Yeah, it was kinda boring. They build up this big bad, then, like, push him in a hole and its over.
Hard disagree, it was really good
On its own, F4 is a bottom-tier marvel movie down there with dark world, eternals, and black widow. Compared to all of the previous F4 movies, its the best one…
Fantastic four 1st one was cheesy superhero, this one is just generic superhero
It was a very safe movie but far from terrible. Definitely the best F4 movie (the first fox one was a more fun watch) by a decent margin but it also didn’t feel like it followed the MCU formula which is a plus imo. It has be interested in how the family will be used in the long run
Did anyone else think it was super quiet? Like the climax of the film is a slow quiet walk through the city with noone actually in danger. Was anyone actuality in the movie? The 5th person in the credits is the news reporter from like 2 scenes. It was kinda fun but for a superhero movie with the Earth or a baby at stake, I felt no urgency. It was so calm
the general consensus is that it was a fine movie. You act like this movie won best film award
It was fine. But I’m also baffled that both the critics and people generally just keep going on and on about how great it is. The number of random people I know who were asking me “Have you seen FF yet? OMG is so amazing!” after it opened up was just crazy.
The 2015 fantastic four was a terrible movie.
This was thoroughly decent and whilst not profound filmmaking it was a return to form for Marvel which has been pretty run of the mill lately.
Main cast was solid and I really enjoyed the retro-futuristic design of this alternative universe.
OP, give specifics. What was bland about the plot? How were the character’s lines boring? What concluded to your supposed lack of synergy? I hate generalized posts like this, that give zero details or examples, and people automatically jump on the bandwagon. Do people really think generalized statements without supporting examples are a thing??
I did like it. But I hated how the baby got so much focus. Baby storylines are literally the most lazy type of plot writers can come up with. Also, it felt like there wasn’t enough character building and really just moments between the whole team. I particularly would have enjoyed more time with Johnny, who was the stand out to me. And a bit more action would have been nice (the last two issues could have been solved with a longer run time).
My biggest issue is how they could have easily dealt with Galactus. I don’t like when heroes have an easy way out of the main conflict. And there was an easy way out here: give him the baby! Billions of lives vs one life, it’s an easy choice. And Franklin would have died anyways if Galactus consumed the earth. My parents said I would understand if I was a parent, and maybe I would. But I still think Sue was an idiot for not giving up her baby when that was the clear and obvious solution. And then despite not giving Franklin up, they still won against Galactus anyways, somehow. It like have made a lot more sense if they lost and had to escape to the main MCU universe.
I wouldn’t say it was a terrible movie, but it wasn’t good either. The acting and story were average, but the pacing of the movie was completely off. A lot of things about it didn’t make sense. The way the Earth reacted to the threat, and the plan they had for defeating Galactus were especially bad.
What I’ve noticed for a while now is that reviewers and audiences, for some reason, review marvel movies less harshly than they do other superhero movies.
Pedro did not deliver in this movie. He felt very bland.
Almost every new movie is terrible so I think u are right,
Unfortunately I agree with everything you said.
I found it to be extremely flat and disjointed with weird editing. No real energy to it at all. I could see what they were going for though.
It’s weird because I’m normally pretty easy to please with that sort of thing, so hearing endless praise makes me feel like I’m missing something.
I think it was a fine movie. Net neutral if you will. I think k they did the characters generally justice, its just the fantastic four arent that dynamic of characters to the average viewer. None of them are someone’s “favorite character. ” they have a pivotal story for marvel, sure, but that’s tied to their villian rather than them.
The CGI was bad. The characters were so stunted especially hated Johnny Storm. Instead of any depth to Ben they just had him look at his reflection a bit. I thought it was a flop I was shocked to see the praise of it.
I was shocked at how bad the ending fight scene was and when they had Susan kill herself using her powers only to get resurrected? No way it was so corny
Not terrible but it was definitely mid. It barely had any action. Mr. Fantastic and the Thing barely used their powers. It was clear that the creators hated Mr. Fantastic’s powers because they look goofy. They should take an example from the One Piece Live Action where the main character has the same powers and they’re not afraid to embrace the goofiness.
Fantastic 3
Ben did nothing for the plot of the movie
Terrible is a stretch, but I was kinda bored the last hour and 30 mins 😁 mid af 5/10
It’s not great but it’s been a long time since anything great has come out.
Just ok is all of a sudden the movie of the decade.
It is, EASILY, the best comic movie I’ve ever seen.
Shit take
Superman couldn’t come up with anything better than John Wick.
I watched Thunderbolts yesterday, and these were exactly my thoughts: bland , forgettable, waste of time. I was really confused when people on Reddit claimed it’s the best MCU movie after Endgame . Is the bar for MCU movies that low, or am I missing something ? Ironically, the only MCU movie I really enjoyed after Endgame was the Doctor Strange sequel, which was weirdly criticized by fans for some reason.
Superman was…. superior. But fantastic four was still fantastic.
Saw it once, won’t go back to see it again. Have seen Superman 4 times and plan on seeing it in the theater again.
Yah I feel like fans just hype up average movies because it wasn’t complete dogshit
Utter shit
It was a letdown
It wasn’t terrible, but just meh… I was expecting better. Specially from Pedro. I think it was the most depressed Mr Fantastic I’ve seen.
I enjoyed it more than I expected to.
Why is this a unpopularopinion?
The characters were good, but the story and Galactus sucked. The scene on his ship was cool, but when he got to Earth? Dude was like 10 stories tall and barely used any powers…like, I’m supposed to be afraid of the guy playing with the stretchy man? He’s supposed to be a Galactic threat, but Sue can push him around?
THANK YOU!
I honestly dont understand all the praise that this movie has been receiving or all the people who seem to be willing to die on a hill trying to find excuses for its low box office numbers.
I’ll tell you why the its box office sales aren’t great. It’s not because it had to compete with superman. Its not because people are struggling financially. It’s because the movie kinda sucked. I’m sorry to shatter your illusion, but it was NOT a good movie, and it definitely was not better than the original 2005 version.
The original version had amazing actors with great chemistry, well written dialogue, great outfits, and a cohesive storyline.
This movie had a group of b-list actors who had very little chemistry, poorly written dialogue, stupid turtleneck sweaters for their “superhero suits”, and the worst contrived bullshit plot I’ve ever seen in a superhero movie. Yes, I know its science fiction, but this movie asked to you suspend your disbelief WAY beyond the realm of what could be considered reasonable cause…plot Armour.
The ENTIRE PLANET universally agreed to not force Sue to give up her baby just because she’s like “nah nah I totally care about you guys as much as this baby. His life is just as important as the BILLIONS OF PEOPLE on earth. Lol NO! I dont buy that for a second. It would be 2 milliseconds flat before the Chinese government would demand the baby be launched off into space to be given to Galactus.
And the fucking “workaround” that Reed came up with is so dumb. Even if an entire planet could be teleported (which…are you kidding me? Going from an egg to a planet would take DECADES of research), it would be immediately destroyed because the gravity would change, the velocity would change, the atmosphere would disappear, etc. If you know 1 tiny bit of physics, you would realize that nearly everyone on earth would likely die immediately if the whole planet was just teleported into a completely different orbit around a different star in a different galaxy. SO. DUMB.
Don’t even get me started on how 3 verbally spoken words could NEVER be used as a “Rosetta stone” to reverse engineer an entire language. A written alphabet would need to be used. Like…how dumb did the writers thing the audience was???
Also, Ben Grimm just sort of exists, but literally does nothing important in the whole film other than flirt with Natasha Lyonne a few times. And then that story went…nowhere.
Mr Fantastic was also useless since he couldn’t stretch more than like 15 feet without breaking.
And Galactus was stupid. If he can choose how big he is, why would he choose to fight humans at human scale? He could’ve threatened to just eat the whole earth in one bite and waited till the UN forced Sue to give up her baby.
Idk. I try to find something redeemable about this movie and I really can’t find much. It was just such a crappy film, and I hope to God that they don’t make a sequel.
It wasn’t perfect but I think it’s kind of hyperbolic to call it terrible.
I thought it was the best Fantastic Four movie so far. Should it get a criterion collection? Nah. Does it need to make some sort of AFI list? Of course not. No marvel movie ticks those boxes. They’re really fun popcorn movies.
Fantastic Four is probably in the upper third of marvel’s 30-some-odd film canon. Where in that third? I dunno.
I assumed I would dislike it due to reviewers I usually like but I thought most of their criticisms weren’t really valid and I was surprised to really like the film.
FF was great.
I didn’t think it was terrible, but it felt very bland to me. There were some good elements here and there but it was missing something. I had pretty much the same feeling coming out of Superman.
It was fine. Could have been better. By far my favorite part of it is when the choir in the theme goes “FAN-TAS-TIC FOOOUURR” and sounds really cool.
Thunderbolts was a better recent Marvel movie, and Superman was a better recent superhero movie in general.
Whilst there were issues present I had from most to least significant: Shalla-Bal going MIA after her Johnny redemption could’ve had more time, Ben in general with how reserved he is & sideplot that had nothing and barely goes anywhere, Reed’s intelligence outside of techno-babble & the teleporter inventtion feeling weak and leadership weak in addressing a crowd, and how easily Sue eon them all back.
But outside of those I loved Sue and Johnny especially, former for being the heart of the team from being the one to support Johnny, dedication 5o protecting Franklin, having the urgency as a character to have the one feud amongst the four eith Reed. Johnny for proving himself with language linguistics, willingness to sacrifice himself, whilst still feeling like the energetic womaniser aspect is there. Didn’t feel like they loaded it with action scenes and said scenes from the chase to the final battle were good in my opinion, and as you said worldbuilding was solid.
My unpopular opinion is I think of the superhero films released this year I thought it was the best. Thunderbolts had a good 3rd act but the 1st 2 felt more bland and played out for MCU with a worse balance if the cast, Superman is arguable as it had higher highs but more lower lows for me.
My problem is I just don’t give a shit about the Fantastic Four. Even if the movie were the most amazing movie in the history of movies I’d still skip it.
I would completely agree and was hoping someone would say it. For me it’s among my bottom Marvel movies but I have admittedly not seen every single recent project. It seemed too rushed, the fight scene in my opinion sucked, Galactus seemed to be a giant Ant Man with even worse CGI, and I thought Johnny and Reed weren’t quite right. I found myself just waiting for the movie to end. I couldn’t get into it. I know this is a very contradictory opinion. I also have Superman in my top-10 all-time superhero movies, which may be equally controversial.
It was mid at best.
I’m so sick and tired of “this is the best Marvel movie since Endgame!” Honestly, most of them have been pretty shit.
oooff. truly an unpopular opinion.
FF was alright. Not great, alright. One on point thing I read here on Reddit was that while Pedro was a great Reed Richards he was a pretty shit Mister Fantastic. Don’t know if he just didn’t want to stretch that much but since that’s literally a nickname for him…and someone tried to say Invisible Woman was the lead and it’s like “yeah no”. It’s literally the definition of an ensemble film; if anyone had a little less time it felt like it was the Thing.
I get they kind of dialed down Johnny from being a manslut like he was in the 60s but…it kind of made him boring. I would have been happier if he found someone who could keep up with him or even better went straight to Alicia Masters.
I’d also love for someone to explain to me how in the actual fuck they were supposed to read that central display in the spaceship. Was it supposed to be binary with the lights or what? Yeah Reed’s one of the smartest men alive but I can’t see Johnny or Sue picking up that shit. Maybe Ben.
Its not getting so much “praise and hype”. You need to watch more movies if you think this was “terrible” tho lol
I enjoyed the family themes
I agree. Bland plot. Not terribly interesting. But the overall look and feel of movie was really cool. The set design, the retro-futuristic look, costumes.. all stellar. But I am not sure if I see it as a too 5 Marvel movie.
I love the Fantastic Four generally, and they finally did this comic book Justice .
I thought it was great but I know how you feel because right now everyone’s loving the Naked Gun remake – a movie I find insufferably bad as a fan of the original.
You have never seen a terrible movie if you actually think this.
I enjoyed the aesthetic but what really charmed me was the worldbuilding and sense of community littered throughout the film. That’s what really got me to like the film. The amount you could feel other citizens love their heroes and the communal effort with the towers just gave me such a sense of whimsy and hope similar to “batteries not included” or “amazing grace and chuck”
I understand the desire to have more connective tissue between the cast but it was either have them all feel like the same person/unit or make them all their own individual characters.
But good god the Thing’s subplot was the most unnecessary and half-assed. Shallah-Bal’s to an extent too because most of her actual character arc seemed internal and offscreen for most of the film.
It was sweet and charming film with a decent fun adventure so that was enough for me.
I went to movie, I was entertained, and I haven’t thought about it since.
Some of you don’t know how to enjoy things.
It wasn’t amazing but saying it was terrible is a little much. There are FAR worse marvel movies.
Turned it on last night. Fell asleep 15 minutes in. Woke up with 15 minutes left. Didn’t enjoy any of what I saw. Seems like a movie made for everyone, making it a movie not really for anyone except Marvel children, maybe.
The irony of there being 4 movies now and they’re not fantastic at all.
