    I don’t use shaving cream

I use a safety razor and good shaving cream/soap!

Don’t overdo it. I shave every 3 days or so.

Stop using shaving cream, it’s a rip off. Also stop using the standard throw away gillette nonsense (or similar). It’s all overpriced garbage.

Get a decent, single blade razor with replacement shaving blades. There’s many options here, I use Henson shaving personally. Brand really doesn’t matter. The sharper the blade, the cleaner it cuts and the less pressure you need. Replacement blades are dirt cheap (last time I bought them it was like $5 for 100). If you have to go back over any spot more than once or push with any effort, the blade is dull and needs to be replaced. How long a blade lasts depends on the density and makeup of your beard, and of course how often you shave.

And for the cream, I just use a standard hypoallergenic facial cleanser. Cetaphil works for me, but there’s other options here too.

Finally shave when it’s properly wet. After a shower is best, so the hair has time to absorb water and soften.

In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I’ll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub. And on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Shave every other day, replace the blade when you start noticing a little bit of resistance.

Mild safety razor with a sharp blade. Also, shaving soap lathered with a brush.

The sharp blade allows me to shave applying no pressure which makes it a lot rarer to get nicks and cuts and even rarer to get razor burns.

everyone always talks about single blade razors but in my experience they’re the worst of the worst.

Don’t overthink it. Just accept that you’re not getting a perfect clean shave, use a 3 blade razor, gentle strokes. Rinse. Repeat. Go with the grain. Yes against the grain would make a closer shave but we don’t want high risk high reward, we just want a shave.

Wet your beard well as in the shower, apply desired cream , let it raise your beard off your face before shaving. Sharp blade.

Get a barber that does razor finishing.

Dorco makes decent and affordable blades. I shave with thick hair conditioner from Trader Joe’s. If you cut yourself get styptic powder to stop the bleed fast. I also shave in the shower and wait to get my face super hot and moisturized by the steam. All of this makes it easier.

Sharp razor. Don’t do it on dry skin. Don’t press hard.

  15. kuntwafer Avatar

I used to use conditioner to shave with when i did shave. And more light strokes instead of fewer heavy strokes.

I used to get nicks and razorburn all the time until I tried this one surefire wat to prevent them. I stopped shaving, and grew out my beard.

  17. AllMyFrendsArePixels Avatar

Use cartridge razors – no nicks.

Use shaving foam/cream/soap ++ use sharp razors (3-7 shaves per cartridge, depending how thick your beard is) – no razor burn.

    Simple.

I just take my time. When I rush is when I used to nick myself.

Just found out how good washing the razor in 91% alcohol smooves out those cactus beard hairs and kinda predator cauterizes as you go. 39 but ey never too late for less after pain

Wash first with soap and hot water to remove dirt and oils.

Use a quality shaving soap and brush. I recommend Proraso and a silver badger brush. Apply liberally.

Use a quality razor with fresh blades. Never old, never rusty.

    Shave with the grain.

    Good luck! 👍

I use Mach 3 and Barbasol. Pretty thick beard. No problems.

I recently changed to a safety razor. Absolutely the best decision ever regarding shaving. I won’t mention the brand I went with. I’ll only mention it starts with an H.

I used to get razorburn, ingrowns, and nicks. I had to get a waiver while I was in the army that allowed me to shave every other day instead of every day. I’ve tried all sorts of brands of shaving razors over the past twenty years. This “H” safety razor is magnificent. I can shave against the grain and not have a single ingrown or any razorburn.

Also, the usual stuff: shave right after a warm shower, use some decent shaving cream with aloe and such (I use a classic brand for sensitive skin, nothing fancy), and instead of aftershave, I use an astringent.

I have no clue to be honest. I don’t use lathers or soaps. Sometimes I shave in the shower or as soon as I get out sometimes I just shave when I see my mustache is getting too wild so I’ll just shave it without water or anything. Never had a nick or anything

Let the blade do the cutting don’t push on it

    K. Alright, here’s what’s worked for me after 20 years of trial and error and a thick, coarse beard to test it on.

Take a long, hot shower. Really let the steam soften your beard. Then dry off completely.

Now here’s the trick: grab any modern razor and shave dry. No water. No shaving cream. No lotion. Just the razor. That’s it.

It’s completely painless, gives the closest shave I’ve ever had, and somehow the blades last way longer.

Bonus theory: I’m convinced shaving cream actually dulls the blade. No proof. just two decades of noticing the pattern.

  26. Sad-Variety-6501 Avatar

Use a moisturizer like Neutrogena for Men or CeraVe. Forget shaving cream

  27. HedonicElench Avatar

I shave in the shower, and don’t use a dull / clogged razor.

  28. gerryf19 Avatar

Sharp, fresh razer blades. Don’t try to stretch them over a long period. 5 shaves max.

  29. nola_mike Avatar

    Fresh blades, quality shave soap.

    Most importantly, take your time.

Learning to properly use a straight razor & shavette.

Modern multi blade “safety” razors have drawn more of my blood than a straight razor ever has.

  31. CaroCogitatus Avatar

I used shaving cream for years with crappy results. I got a better shave without any shaving cream at all, although with more ingrown whiskers, which are annoying.

In middle age I started getting scabs on my forearms like my elderly relatives have and fought it with a hyaluronic acid skin cream and decided on a whim to use that for shaving as well.

Works well for me. I get far fewer ingrown whiskers and a better shave.

Clean, sharp razor also helps a lot. Change the blades frequently.

SAFETY RAZOR SAFETY RAZOR SAFETY RAZOR

Ultimate life hack on clean shaves and never wasting money on disposable cartridges again. I spent about $40 on a nice razor that has different heads for desired closeness/sensitivity. Spent another $10 on enough blades to last literal years.

It keeps my necks super clean with no irritation. I don’t go through the trouble of using shave soaps/brush, I just shave with normal gel after I shower.

Watch a few vids on how to do it. Let me know if you want more details.

  33. oracleofnonsense Avatar

Shower, soap, shave. Do it with my eyes closed and a sharp, disposable, 2 blade razor.

I’ve tried shaving creams and multiple blade razors and I always nick myself with those “fancy” razors and creams.
