Fighting homelessness

r/

I am a 27 year old divorced homeless veteran who recently got evicted due to not being employed for 4 months while going through a divorce. I’m not perfect and I’ve made not one, but two handfuls of mistakes. I’m currently working making good money (around 60k). I’m fighting tooth and nail to try and find someone who will rent out to me because of my eviction. I have gone through the VA and several other avenues to try and combat my situation. I have the money to pay rent, but no one is willing to rent out to me. It’s now been 3 months and 5 denied applications (the only ones that even made it that far). What can I do? I have no family, no friends anymore, no support structure other than my currently miserable life that I am fighting desperately to change. Please anyone give me some advice on what the hell I am supposed to do.

Try looking on Facebook marketplace, ask any old friends for reference or drop in to any office that helps with rent/ housing issues. Or until then find a cheap motel that is not too bad. I don’t know how it feels but I do know that you will get through it. You’ll find your way.

u have to tough it out. just sleep in ur car and get a gym membership (or the showers). try to make some connections at work. there are probably some organizations that can offer help to u locally as well. if u have money, youll be fine. just keep grinding.

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation, the system does not make it easy if you have evictions and such. Definitely keep the VA and their case management in the loop. But you might have a better chance looking for a small-time landlord, like someone who only rents out a couple of units. You can usually find these listed on Facebook Marketplace or even Craigslist. They can be easier to work with if you explain your story as they are not hampered by the strict policies a rental company might have. You can offer to put extra money down (pay more months ahead) as a security with them to make the offer more enticing despite your eviction. They might willing to accept that.

Fall back to a room to rent or a roommate scenerio

Motels that rent by the week. It’s not ideal but it’s something.

I would consider buying a used RV and living in that. It’s much easier to find an RV spot than an apartment and you can move it.

Va home loan and buy a house. Fixer upper or not. If you can afford to rent, you can afford to buy. And owning is better than renting, regardless of debt

See if you can be someone’s roommate.

In a similar situation. The good part is you have income. There are multiple websites for rooms to rent. Hotpads etc. Look for private owners as well. For now get you a extended stay hotel they come with kitchenettes. You can stay in those as long as you want. This way you can work on your credit score etc.

I would look on Facebook for a room to rent! People do it all the time! And it won’t cost as much as a normal place so you can still save money while you stay there!

Also, you could post to Facebook maybe on marketplace that you’re seeking a room for rent!

Buy a camper van then live where ever your heart desires never pay rent again

You need a small private LL who would have the ability to work with you (eg. Not be subject to pre-set standards that are non-negotiable)

Drive around the area you want to live in and look generic “for rent” signs – not the professional ones, the ones one could buy at Home Depot or Lowe’s and write their phone # on.

Go on FB Marketplace and find something. Try renting from a private homeowner they’re more understanding. Hopefully you have a good amount of money saved up to pay a couple months rent on the spot they won’t care about an eviction then. I hope everything works out for the best for you and your situation becomes a lot better. I’m an Army veteran and had friends in your situation.

P.S. I think someone else said it but a camper is a great idea too and probably a lot cheaper in the long run.

Find your local YMCA and see if they have any housing programs. I would also look into charities looking to help veterans gain housing

Check it out, keep looking. Look for places with no application fees. That usually means no credit check. No credit check, no eviction notice. Look for rooms to rent, go to the local homeless shelter and ask for resources. (Try not to sleep there, they are usually bed bug n scabies infested) idk if it works where your at but calling 211 usually will give you resources. You are working and have money, so your miles ahead. You have a car? I was homeless in my car for 4 years.it only sucked the first year. After I got a bigger car, income and a gym membership to shower everyday.. it wasn’t so bad. It actually kinda sucked to start paying rent again. But.. laying here in my bed with my dog next to me.. doesn’t suck so bad after all.
    Good luck!

Yea, I’ve heard either reset and find a room in an existing place with someone or sometimes if you tell the landlord “hey I’m willing to give First, last, security deposit and…” Plus my pay stubs sometimes ppl are more willing to take the risk

Sneak into Mexico and demand they pay your healrhcare, food and a 5 star hotel like the Roosevelt in NYC.

Show up with the rent and deposit check with another cashiers check for another 2 months. If you’ve not been paying rent but have been working, you should have some money saved. People rarely say no to up front money.

Try flatmates, or marketplace on Facebook has listings. Generally won’t need to be added to a leaS if someone is renting you a room
