Location: Washington/Texas
My husband’s father passed away in Sept ’22 as a resident of Washington state. He did not leave a will, and his only property in Washington is a tiny house we’re not interested in. Problem is, he owned quite a lot of land in Texas (where we live) with mineral & surface rights up in the air, and we’ve gotten a different answer from every lawyer we’ve spoken to on where we have to file probate and how long we have to file it. We already tried dealing with one Washington lawyer a couple years ago and he screwed us out of $5000 and didn’t file anything.
Do we need a lawyer in Washington or Texas? Do we have to show up in court in Washington? How much time do we have to figure this out?
