It makes eggs taste way better. It makes a lot of things taste better for that matter. If there’s salt, pepper & sugar on the table to increase the saltiness, spice & sweetness, respectively, of the dish, then why not have MSG on the table to increase the savoriness.

Accent the flavor enhancer
No, MSG is one of worst ways to enhance umami. It tends to be one-dimensional. There are far better options for adding depth and richness, like cheese, anchovies, miso, soy sauce, or fish sauce depending what cuisine you are having.
MSG can be useful if you don’t have access to those, especially for college students or you don’t have access to certain items. But in most cases, it’s a shortcut. Like if you can’t get miso in your city, MSG is a fine replacement.
But you are talking about restaurants. Many restaurants have better umami enhancer on hand if you just ask.
I recently bought little travel sized spice shakers to carry with me when I go out to eat. One for salt, one for MSG, one for a special Vietnamese red pepper flake variety I love. Empower your own culinary journey!
