Do you think it is necessary at an older age? For those who do, are you still able to hook it at the back or did you opt for a sports bra or bralette?

I wish it was an option but I need to wear a bra. If I don’t I have back and shoulder pain. Since I have to wear one I have all kinds, front hook, back hook, sports bra over the head etc.
Pretty easy to spot the teenage boy in this post.
(You don’t hook it in the back. You hook it in the front and spin it around)
Nah, I hook mine in the back. It’s easier than spinning it around. But I hook it and then pull the straps up over my arms.
I have front hook ones
I’ve been wearing sports bras since I turned 36. More comfortable than regular bras, and easier to wash. For the last two years (I’m 65), I frequently skip the sports bra if I’m staying home.
I still wear one, but I left the underwires behind when I retired. Just because we are “mature”, doesn’t mean we should let all the standards slip. Unrestrained breasts look very sloppy.
I wear one in public only. I would hate to trip over them
I’m a breast cancer survivor and retired. Bras are uncomfortable so I very rarely wear one. I wear a ribbed, tank style undershirt and layer an unbuttoned shirt or cardigan over whatever top I’m wearing to distract from being braless and uneven. Nobody cares. I’m invisible.
Yes I wear a bra. I’m a D cup and I find it uncomfortable yo just be hanging out there.
I almost never wear at home, the girls just want to be free! My go to is a Shefit zip front leisure/sports bra, so comfortable. I am a 40K and have always been envious of you flat chested women who can go braless in public and wear any kind of shirt you want!
I do and always plan to wear a bra. You don’t need to hook it in the back if you hook it in the front and then spin it around to put your arms in it. I hate sports bras. Those are much harder to put on.
Nobody needs to see this without a bra, including me.
Yes, I do. Hook it in the front, turn it around, and pull the straps up. I never mastered hooking it in the back.
As little as possible—I wear a cami more often.
Out in public in warm weather, bra on. At home, or in colder weather wearing a jacket, no bra.
The girls are definitely on a downward trajectory. I keep em in a sports bra to try to slow the decent.
It’s not April Fools’ Day. So I know you’re not joking. When you get to be OUR age….if you don’t wear a bra, your boobs are gonna be down around your belly button.
Of course I do. I got a front hook bra many years ago and have enjoyed that type for a long time.
I went to a sports bra, so much easier to put on. I can still attach at the back, but bluggh Sports bras are much more comfy ☺️
Yes I wear a bra sometimes. I wear a sports bra, very comfortable.
I stopped wearing a bra at 22 and never looked back. I wish more women would.
I’m a 36J (US sizing) so not wearing a bra is not an option. I even have to wear a soft sports bra to sleep in. If I ever become unable to hook it at the back, I will need someone to help me.
Can’t not wear one unfortunately. I’d honestly like to get rid of these lumps of fat and fiber (it’s all fibrous tissue now).
Only when I absolutely have to!
Only in public as I am more comfortable at home wearing a sport tank top.
The spandex ones. Can’t pull them on over my head, but step-in and pull up. I’m done with wires and pinchy stuff.
Only when I dress up, or in summer when it is too warm to hide in a heavy sweater or hoodie.
Sports bra.
OP have you ever seen or lived with woman?
i’m only 51 but not always. my boobs we’re very small before my implants and silicon doesn’t weigh that much, lol.
i’m more comfortable without a bra but if they were heavy boobs i’d probably wear one to prevent back pain
I only wear one when I’m wearing something that a lack of one would be noticeable, I wear tank tops with a shelf 99% of the time. I’m feral at this stage.
I’m a DD or DDD and no longer wear a bra. YUCK!
I wear Duluth tank tops (shelf bra), and my life has changed for the better. Comfortable, holds me VERY well, even when I’m active outdoors, and I no longer have marks from my bra straps.
I have them in every color. BTW, I never pay full price – Duluth’s sales are awesome.
My wife only wears one if she leaves the house.
As little as possible. And I just hook up the bra in the front and twist it around to the back and stick my arms in and pull it up.
At home I wear a snug fitting camisole top. When I go out though, to doctors appt. I haul out the old playtex or a sports bra.
Still able to hook it at the back??? I’m not sure, but I think most women hook their bras in front & then turn the hooks around to the back, arrange themselves into the cups, & then slip their arms in. How many women can comfortably bend their arms in back to hook a bra in back???
My girls need a house.
Yes, except when I’m on holiday somewhere very hot. I fasten at the front and swizzle.
Yes. It’s necessary for me. At my size I need support. Simply walking downstairs creates too much movement. I wear all styles of bras, depending on my outfit.
I can’t imagine not wearing a bra.
no, only when i am around people. When i am alone first thing i do is take that damn thing off. I hated the bra from the first day i needed one. Now at 56 i let them fly free as often as possible.
I still wear one. My boobs are one part of me that’s still perky and I want to keep them that way as long as possible. I hook in the back.
I am 63 and going braless is uncomfortable to say the least. Due to being brainwashed by my grandmother, I hook the bra behind and unhook it that way as well.
Of course. Who doesn’t? I don’t wear it at home but when I’m out and about without a coat on, I don’t need the stares.
When I (F, 60) am at home alone with my husband: mostly no bra. Expecting someone or going out: bra. I still use underwire (and hook them in the back) but also comfy no-underwire if I’m gonna wear one at home.
I mostly don’t wear one at home. I’ve been doing that since I was young, so age isn’t a factor.
I wear one when I leave the house. I don’t wear one when I am home. I hook my bras in the front and slide it around until it’s facing the right way.
I use more a bralette just to be decent and somewhat contained. I need to have front closers because of my neck and shoulders. It’s getting really hard to get out of t shirts and such.
I have several Allbirds brand bralettes. They give decent support and I just don’t really care anymore. They’re VERY comfortable. Actually, they’ve discontinued the style I like best, so I’ll be up shit creek when these fall apart.
I keep a few, more traditional bras around, but haven’t worn them in a couple of years.
I refuse to answer to such personal questions. it’s weird. Why would anyone want to know that?
Only when I have to. I will wear two layers to hide the nips to avoid wearing a bra. I get hives from the pressure from my bra straps.
I just replaced all my bras, they were probably around 15 years old 🙁 it’s nice to be able to wear an underwire again though, I haven’t had a proper rack in years. I broke a few underwires at work and it got extremely uncomfortable so I had to leave them by the wayside. I mean I’m disabled now, but even if I was still working, applying a locomotive handbrake while braless is something I never want to experience again lol
Yes. Despite what recent “studies” show, they DO prevent sagging if you spend the effort and money to get one that fits correctly.
Also to look decent in public. I doubt anyone would want to see me at my age and size braless.
Of course i put them on correctly. Putting them on backwards and turning them around reminds me of being a little kid with my first trainer bra
I used to get cysts in the crease underneath the breasts. One got infected with MRSA and I almost died. The surgeon (female) who removed it told me in the future to not wear a bra in the house. She said no matter how clean you are that bras rub bacteria on the skin into pores clogging them and causing those cysts. So I only wear a bra out in public.
I sometimes wear camis, but always wear a support garment of some type, and it’s usually a bra. I hook my bra in front and then spin it around back but I can unhook my bra in back just fine.
When I’m going into the office or any other work/professional event I do. If I’m just out and about then I wear a tank with some “support” (not like a built-in bra level of support, just something that’s a bit tighter than a t-shirt. If folks don’t like that they swing a bit, that’s their problem, not mine.
Yep, me too, only in public, and 99% of the time, it’s a sports bra.😋
Yes, in public or out in the yard. D cups just hanging there on an older woman don’t look so good.
Look, I wear an H cup. I cannot have free range tiddies.
Fortunately I’m small enough I don’t always need a bra. Most of the time I can get away with just a cammy.
I do and always will. Without an underwire it looks like I have no boobs at all.
I have very large breasts. I always wear a bra. However, I wear comfortable cotton bralettes most of the time, and a proper bra when I dress nicer.
Yes. I don’t like looking saggy.
Nope! I had a double mastectomy a couple of years ago. No need for bras anymore— Hallelujah! It’s a relief not to have to carry 15 extra pounds, that I had to heave around just to lie down on my side. I have other issues, but gouges from bra straps and backaches are no longer among them!
I’m 40 now but for about 6 years now I’ve been wearing one without hooks; so just straight over the head, no wire but some padding to cover the nips 🤣😂
Don’t think I could go back to wired push ups like I used to wear!
Sports bra at home. Real bra out in public.
No issues doing it up, fortunately.
I have no problem hooking bras. I learned very early to put one one backwards, hook it, twist it and pull it up. I wear underwires in public (I pretty much have to) but I like sports bras around the house and with baggy shirts. Not sure how things will be when I (hopefully) retire at the end of October.
I let my ladies fly…. And I’m a DDD
I was never taught to hook my bra in the back. I was taught that you put it around your torso with the cups in the back, then hook the hooks and rotate the bra around to the cups now being in the front, then you pull it up over your breasts and put your arms through the straps on the way up. Adjust, straighten the back if needed, and you are done.
Mine currently fall so low that my nips are out of sight. I wear no bra at home, but do when I go out. I have both sports and regular bras and tend toward the sports ones, but recently got the newer, unstructured, super stretchy ones with cup pads in them. I am enjoying trying out this kind. Even the one that hooks in the back and the one that zips in the front are nice and comfortable. Today I try the cami/faux turtleneck one!
Only necessary in public. I wear a super comfy one at home.
Only when I have to! Stopped wearing one when I’m not working. Sports bras all week.
I do the spinning technique, always have. But I’ve also added several compression tanks from Express. I order two sizes down, and they make the perfect alternative to a regular bra.
As little as possible. Only when someone other than my husband is around. The minute I come in the door that thing is flying through the air. Sometimes, with a winter coat on, I’ll “forget” to wear a bra but honestly, in the summer, it would be unsightly enough to scare the villagers, especially the young women who wonder what the hell happened. Gravity happened, my friends.
The best bra is an oversized sweatshirt.
I always wear a bra, except once in a while to make my hubby happy. I hate the bounce, it’s uncomfortable for me. I’m a fast walker, so maybe that’s part of it. I also wore one to bed while I was pregnant and nursing, and at 61yo now they actually have mostly kept their shape.
I definitely wear a bra. And at home, I wear a sports bra. I have no desire for my boobs to become long and saggy.
When society gets to the point that men aren’t oggling braless women, then I’ll stop wearing one.
I’ve never been able to hook my bra in the back due to a birth deformity that froze my wrist, so I have to hook it in the front and swing it around. I’ve yet to find a front closure bra that fits properly for my 38Fs.
Of course! I don’t want to give myself black eyes.
Dude. Hook in the back? I haven’t done that since I was 20. Hook in front and spin it around
I always wear some kind of bra, even when I sleep I have my Ah Bra on. They have always been big, but the sagging and settling into my armpits is so uncomfortable. Turn over the wrong way and one gets stretched around my body. I also hate when they stick to me during an inevitable night sweat session.
I have some unpadded underwires that are surprisingly comfortable that I wear when I go out or sometimes around the house.
You know you can hook it in front spin it around and then pull up the straps.
I have switched over to an all cotton Hanes sports bra ..
Only in public, and not underwired although I need it. At home crop sport top vests or free-boobing.
I have several pull on sports bras and several front hook granny bras but I have not worn one for a while. I grew up in the no bra sixties. But back then I was a member of the IBTC. IYKYK.
Almost 50. I wear sport bras. I don’t think I’ve ever gone bra less in my life
I had the girls surgically reclaimed about 15 years ago And they still look really great for being 50. I don’t like a bra but I also I’m not a huge fan of my nipples gouging out everyone’s eyes either And I do want a slight lift, so I wear a form fitting tank top. Not as tight as like Spanx but adequate that it does the job.
Yes. At work and in public.
You can hook them in the front and spin it
At home just a soft jog bra.
For everyone in this thread that says their bra is uncomfortable, please go to

and measure yourself using their instructions. Millions of women are wearing the wrong size bra due to poor fitters and false marketing. Many bra stores will fit you into a bra they have on hand rather than helping you find your true size. Bras should not be uncomfortable, even underwired ones.
Define “older age”.
I have never hooked my bras in the back … how did that even get to be a thing? Yes, bras are worn every day, but I finally found those really comfy ones that have no underwire … The Comfort Bra type thing.
Can’t stand not wearing a bra. I don’t like to boob around boobily, I don’t like to swing free. Serious underwire all day, bralette at night. 34DD, feel very comfortable keeping them contained.
I wear one every day, though I ditched the underwire years ago.
Yes, but I now wear more comfortable bras. No wires, no padding. My favorites are cotton knit wide straps or sports type.
Yes. If you have big boobs it’s much more comfortable wearing one
I used to wear underwire bras every day to work, but I was on the small side – the underwire bras gave me a little extra oomph. I retired 6 years ago and since retirement I put on a little weight – I’m currently a C, after years of being a B. My biggest incentive to stay on the diet/ exercise regime I’ve started is so I can go back to not wearing a bra all of the time. I wear one now when I go out, but you bet it comes off when I get home. It’s been soooo hot this summer too, and I just can’t stand how hot they make me feel, and how constrained. The ones I wear now are bralettes I suppose – those stretchy ones you can pull over your head (I can’t imagine one that would fit over my butt yet still keep the girls in line). I wear them to the gym too. I spend most days in my studio and revel in the freedom. My friends know to call first or deal with the braless spectre before them. A couple of them know they can visit me braless too. It’s spreading.
I gave up on actual bras during lockdown. I only wear stretchy cotton bras now, mostly bra tops, occasionally bra shaped with straps and hooks.
I never wear them at home and it’s the first thing to come off when I get home, after my coat.
I love across the road from a supermarket and never wear a bra to go there.
I only wear bras out of the house. I work from home, my little dog( who just passed on) would cry every time I put a bra on, he knew I was leaving the house🤣🤣🤣
My wife does, but she has pretty large breasts, and as a consequence she thinks it helps her keep them out of the way at work. In public, she tends towards modesty, so she wears one. Thank God she doesn’t wear one to bed (yes I’ve actually had women who did)
Nope
Sports bras only. They’re comfy & inexpensive.
A tank top will do most days. I’m in Florida and a proud member of the Itty Bitty committee 🙌
I wear a comfy bralette at home and for errands and a real bra for social gatherings, because they just don’t stay up on their own anymore and I look better in a bra.
I have a couple front hook ones in addition to the back hook, so if it’s a bad shoulder day I have options.
It gets too swampy under there or they’re too mobile, so I’m still in Soft Bras and still furious at Torrid for getting rid of their best Lightly-Lined Bralettes.
No underwires ever! But only sports bra or bralette if needed. Hate those things!
Absolutely. I’m much more comfortable with support. The problem is finding a bra that doesn’t have an underwire or something else that makes it uncomfortable.
I do. I step into it and pull it up.
Too sweaty if I don’t wear one, but mine hooks in front so I unhook it when it gets uncomfortable, and close it up if we have visitors or if I’m going out.
I am blessed in that I don’t need one, even at age 62. I pretty much gave them up as mandatory as early as high school if shirt/sweater was thick enough. Wore to work if needed only. Haven’t had one on since I retired last year. Feel sorry for those who have to wear all the time. Little boobs have their own rewards!
r/ABraThatFits is about to be your favorite subreddit!
I’m a c cup and prefer to wear a bra when going out. At home, I found some great bralettes on the Jockey website. Those are over-the-head pull-ons. For bras, I do up the hooks by pulling the back to the front, hook up (so to speak), then tug the bra around. Doesn’t everyone still do that? No need to be a contortionist.
I wear bralettes because of the whole nipple stigma and when I[‘m just at home, I don’t even wear that. I don’t have to worry about sagging.
I only wear one when I don’t want people to stare at my nipples poking through my shirt. Really. I hate bras so much.
Went to bralettes, and then a breast lift at 76. Soooo glad.
Nope. I stopped wearing them in my late 20s when studies had found that they cut off the flow of blood to the breasts and were implicated in breast cancer. Further studies found that bras actually decondition the pectoral muscles that hold up the breast tissue and contribute to floppiness. I am fortunate to be a small C/large B cup so I could go without it apart from when exercising. I’m 55 now and my boobs are still as upright and perky as they were in my early 30s.
I haven’t in years. I never did need one
Hell no. I used to jack the girls up and put them on display when I was trying to look pretty. Now they flap free, my back doesn’t hurt, and I have more disposable income because I’m not buying lace cages in size G
No..these days just a tee or a camisole, but if I did, it would have to hook in the front lol
I have implants so I don’t have to wear one but I officially gave them up during the pandemic
Not usually
No
Only in public unless I’m wearing a coat in winter. The stretchy kind that you put on over your head, but not as tight as a sports bra. I never wear one at home, no matter who’s around.
My friends long ago burnt their bras.
I’ve gone one step further, incinerated my breasts.
I did not feel this way when I was a teenager – but I am grateful that I have very small boobs. I no longer where a bra, anywhere, unless I plan on bouncing, in which case, its a pull on sports bra for me. Along with lots of other responders, I’ve never been dextrous enough to hook them in the back – I was a hook and spin girl.
I wear one except when sleeping. It is uncomfortable to not wear one. But, as my left boob told my right one, If we keep hanging around together like this, people are gonna think we’re nuts!”
Do what makes YOU feel comfortable.
I wear one if I’m going out past the boundaries of my front or back yard.
Edit: From the time my mother showed me at age 12, I’ve put them around my chest, hooked them in the front, and then spun the cups around to the front.
