I’m asking since I’ve heard stories from people that they wish they went to K9 or SWAT or full on homicide detective
Former (and even current) LEO’s, if given the chance what unit or specialized team would you join if you could go back x amount of yrs?

The only place I never worked that I wanted to was narcotics.
I worked crime suppression as a deputy and supervisor, been on the swat team nearly a decade and sniper team.
It was the opposite for me. Was just excited to get on the job. Didn’t think about specialized units. Through fortuitous events managed to get on SWAT. Did that for 14 years.
No. I got to do everything I wanted to do in the job. Firearms instructor, K9, undercover narcotics.
When I first got in the job, I would have been interested in swat but after I had to call them out a few times, I had no interest anymore.
When you are on swat, you were on call 24/7. SWAT calls are not as sexy as they look on tv. It’s usually a lot of hours of waiting while you’re trying to negotiate.
In the units I wanted. No need to go back.
Fugitive Task Force and/or Homicide detective would have been interesting before I had a wife and kids.
None. I’d study every test the second I was eligible and move up the ranks and make the most money I could to walk into work
All these years later I finally realized chasing units is a suckers bet. It holds you down and those who are less qualified and good at their job as you become your supervisors.
I’m a bomb tech. I would have joined 10 years earlier if I could do it again.
I’m a crime scene investigator, which is the job I’ve always wanted. If I got bored with this, I’d probably move into Intel.
I’ve never had the slightest desire to do K9, SWAT, or any of that “high speed” stuff.
I’ve had several friends try to get me into detective positions, but I don’t like talking to people. I’m much more comfortable taking pictures of bodies.

In my career, I have been an FTO, Sgt. Currently a lieutenant.
I worked ag/marine, property crimes, street crime/bunko, sex crimes, motors, firearms instructor, driving instructor, non -lethal, combative. CIT, Peer.
I’ve never been a K9 officer, but I would love to be in the aviation unit. I’d trade my 38 years on the job for that.
If I had to go back local I’d go back to my narcotics unit all day and 2x on Sunday.
Not a cop but I feel like if you can cross deputize into Marshals or another federal unit, you have a lot of play if you wanna go fed. If I did go sworn, that would be what I’d want to do.
I would’ve stayed in K9 and not take the promotion to sergeant
