Found 2 shed antlers in Montana Forest and pulled over and cited in Wyoming National Park
I have been on a month long road trip in our camper van with my husband and we have been camping in various national forests areas between WA, ID, MT, and now WY.
I found two sets of antlers in the National Forests of MT a couple weeks ago while hiking.
I brought them back to our van and my husband thought we needed a tag to keep them.
I looked up the info and according to MT fish and wildlife I didn’t need any tags and we could legally keep the antlers. I strapped them to the roof rack of our van with zip ties and they’ve been up there for a few weeks as we work our way home to AZ.
Last night I was driving in GTNP and pulled over by 2 rangers who said I needed proof of where we got them such as tags. I don’t have those, or photos that identify the location I found them. The ranger had me take them down from the roof and seized them. Then he cited both of us and said we have to appear in court in Jackson on Sept 30th.
I don’t understand what the possible outcome of this would be. Neither of us have criminal records and I thought I was being responsible by looking up the laws when I found the antlers.
I also told the ranger that I was the one that found them and didn’t understand why my husband was being cited for it additionally.
I’ve googled the charge of “possession of dead wildlife parts; such as antlers or nests” and can only find cases of poachers that have over a hundred pounds of illegally obtained antlers for sale. The antlers I found aren’t even that fancy- they are pretty banged up but I thought they would be a neat souvenir for our outdoors area in our house
I’m really stressed out about this and just want to know what to expect.
Thanks for any advice.

You need to be compliant in every state you go to. While it might be legal in Montana to not need tags, looks like Wyoming needed proof they were obtained legally.
What was the code you were cited for?
