Doing free manual labor for your friends is the ultimate test of loyalty. Most people will complain about helping someone carry a couch up a flight of stairs. Committing to a full scale home renovation for absolutely zero dollars is a level of generosity that should be met with endless gratitude and free pizza. But one guy on Reddit recently found out that no good deed goes unpunished when his friend’s entitled wife completely disrespected his time and effort.
The Original Poster is a guy who happens to have a lot of incredibly valuable skills. Because his father was a handyman and a contractor, he knows exactly how to do maintenance, repairs, and major upgrades on a house. He even owns all the expensive tools required to get the job done right. So when his friend and his friend’s wife bought a fixer upper for their first home, he generously stepped up to help them out.
Keep in mind that this guy works a regular job and is actively spending his precious weeks off doing free manual labor for his buddy. Over one weekend, he was tackling the dining room. He had all of his painting supplies meticulously set up exactly the way he wanted them. He laid down a very clear boundary and explicitly told both of them to just let him do the work in peace.
That boundary was instantly violated. For some f*cking reason the wife decided to casually let their dogs wander right into the active painting zone. Anyone who has ever painted a room knows that pets and wet paint are a disastrous combination.
Predictably total chaos ensued. One of the dogs immediately stepped right into the wet roller tray and then happily jumped all over the Original Poster. Instead of apologizing for ruining his clothes and his setup the wife just laughed it off like muddy paw prints were no big deal. Her careless attitude meant he had to completely throw out the batch of primer because it was now full of mud and dog hair.
Pushed to his absolute limit the guy decided to send a very clear message. After he prepared a brand new tray of paint he took his roller and wrote the word F*CK in giant letters across the dining room wall. But here is the brilliant part. He wrote the massive curse word using only primer.
For anyone who does not know how painting works, primer is just the base coat. It is designed to stick to the drywall and create a solid surface so the actual colored paint goes on smoothly. You literally have to paint over it for the job to be finished. It is entirely invisible once the final color goes on the wall.
The wife walked in, saw the giant wet swear word, and completely lost her mind. She started screaming about how he was drawing profanity in her brand new house. He calmly reminded her that it was just primer, told her to stay out of his way, completely finished painting over the word, and went home.
Later that night the friend called to demand an apology. He claimed his wife was deeply upset by the childish stunt and declared the Original Poster was not allowed back in the house until he formally apologized. The guy hilariously asked his buddy to provide a picture of the offensive word. The friend obviously could not provide one because it was completely buried under a fresh coat of dining room paint.
The friend kept demanding an apology for a word that technically no longer existed on the wall. The Original Poster firmly stated that his buddy wanting an apology was in no way the same thing as him actually needing to apologize. When the friend reiterated the ban from the house the guy happily accepted the terms. He was thrilled to get his time off back instead of doing free labor for ungrateful people.
The reality of the situation hit the homeowners two days later. The friend had to swallow his pride and call back to ask if the guy was coming to finish the painting. The Original Poster casually replied that he was not ready to apologize yet and maybe he would think about it when he got back from his three week work trip. He added that he probably will not ever apologize.
Now the wife is running a smear campaign. She is telling everyone in their circle that he is a sh!tty person for leaving a job half finished. But whenever anyone asks him about it he just tells the absolute truth. He was working for free and they explicitly told him not to come back. Now the entire friend group is fighting and nobody else is volunteering to help the couple. They will either have to half a** the job themselves or finally pay a professional. He is definitely not the a**hole for walking away from that mess.
