Howdy.
Location: Texas
Yesterday, a friend came over to look at purchasing my motorcycle. I allowed him to test ride it down the rural road infront of my house. Just a half mile from my home, an 89 year old man hit him causing critical injuries. Police stated that the elderly man is solely at fault. Police took the bike to an impound yard for evidence.
My bike is destroyed, and my friend is possibly looking at amputation of a foot. I only had liability on this motorcycle as I do not ride it frequently. Friend also has motorcycle insurance as well.
Never dealt with a situation like this, what are my next steps? Do I file a claim with the at fault parties insurance or do I go ahead and get a lawyer?
Thanks

Your friend may need a lawyer (personal injury) but your property damage isn’t high enough to justify a lawyer (or have one be interested). What was the value of the bike, what were you selling it for? You make a claim against the man’s insurance, and if that doesn’t work, you sue the man in small claims court (which may or may not be worth it).
