Fucked up my GPA at 18-22, completely lost on what to do now (24)

r/

I started my (community) college career at 18, flunked a ton of courses and didn’t start caring until I was 22. Parents pay my tuition and can continue to. I would’ve finished my degree but my GPA is too low to graduate (1.79, have to be 2.0).

Meeting with an advisor, she basically made me feel like I was nothing and I’d never be anything because I fucked up when I was younger. She kept bringing up all my failed classes and making me feel horrible. Said the only thing I have going for me is I have a stable job (7 years, restaurant management, don’t wanna pursue a career in it though). She made it seem like I was stupid, talked down to me the entire time, and really drilled into me how much I fucked up and how much I failed myself.

Parents will pay for more classes for me to fix my GPA (and I’m thinking of fixing it to a 2.5 to get a GAA for my state) but I have VA benefits from my mom (2 years fully paid) that are gonna expire soon. I can’t help but feel like a fucking loser. I constantly feel like I’m behind and I should’ve “finished” already, that my past completely screwed up my future and I basically should completely give up. I mean, who the fuck takes this long to finish community college? Feels like my younger self completely screwed over my future because I went into college immediately when I wasn’t ready.

Looking for advice… maybe just some encouraging words?

Pick yourself and get back on your feet. Demand to meet with a different advisor. College is about not giving up as much as it is about intelligence.

You may have to retake classes, but that’s ok. A lot of people do it. Remember to withdraw instead of taking the F next time. There is very little downside to W on your transcript.

There’s nothing wrong with staying at community college for a long time. Like literally the worst outcome in the situation is you stay there for a few more years and you get busy with work. You have to go to diploma mill school online and finish slowly. (Don’t do this are your first option though, go to a real state school).

College credits rarely expire, you can pretty much keep them forever.

I failed out of community college. I’m doing pretty well for myself I suppose. I’m definitely not the prime example of success but… Those numbers on a page told everyone in the world that I would succeed everywhere in life. 96% average and I’m so smart. I’ll be so successful. But I’m not I’m autistic and I piss my bosses off and I’m slow because of my processing disorder. Yet I’m still able to make a livable wage so far. I will be the first person to tell you that numbers on a page mean nothing on your success. Just because your numbers are low doesn’t mean somebody can tell you you can’t succeed. I mean I thought it would be an engineer with my grades. But no I drive trucks. And maybe it’s not the best job in the world but it is a job and it pays me well. And I’m successful in it so. Yeah I’ll take it. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t. Any education you get is good and surely you’ll be able to take some job that will pay you decently. Then it’s just a matter of working your way up from there.

Hey dude, don’t beat yourself up. We’ve all made mistakes. Here’s the hot take: there’s no ‘right’ timeline for life. It’s a game of 7 billion players, each with their own strategies. So what if you’re a late bloomer? You’ve got a chance to make a comeback- seize it! You’re more mature now and in a better position to make the most of your education. Besides, your survival in restaurant management for 7 yrs ain’t no joke. Sure, you slipped, but you’re strong enough to pick yourself up. Stay strong, mate. You’ve got this! Don’t let a pothole become a sinkhole.

    Join the military

I’ll try to make this short

Got 2 A.A degree. Gave up school and GPA went from 3.3 to 2.4.

Was 25 with no bachelor’s and working at amazon warehouse

    Went to military

I am now 29 with a job that pays $50/hour (business love military)

I also go to school and get GI Bill, BAH, and work paycheck.

I found a job that requires B.A and pays 65/hour

CHP and U.S Marshall’s also offered me a job, personally

Hey, I just want to give you some encouragement. I’m finally getting my associates degree from community college after 17 years since I took my first class there. I actually don’t feel lame at all for doing it, I’m excited to have something on my resume. I would love a bachelor’s degree but one step at a time. I’m proud of myself. 🙂

What do you aspire to do for your career?

I did the same thing when I was young. I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish, but then one of my advisors mentioned that after 2 years (I think) the classes you passed you will still get credit for but no longer affect your gpa. Kinda like how a ticket is still on your driving record after 2 years but they no longer count as points against it. Might want to see what your school’s policy is on this and then you can just wait it out and enroll again at a later date to finish.
EDIT- during that 2 year hiatus I realized that the reason I quit going to all those classes was because I wasn’t all that interested in that particular field. When I went back and finished I decided on a totally different career path and graduated with a 3.8 gpa and attendance wasn’t an issue.

Don’t listen to her. People mature at different ages. Find a major that you enjoy and help you find a job. Put 100% and get good grades. You can do it!
