Gas prices: cash vs. debit/credit change?

r/

Usually card price is 10¢ more a gallon over cash. But yesterday and today, the few stations I drove by had the same prices for both. Was there a law change or something in California? Or just those stations coincidentally making the same error?

That’s an interesting observation about gas prices! It’s great to see some stations offering the same price for cash and card. I haven’t heard of any law changes in California regarding this, but it could just be a temporary promotion or a strategy to attract more customers. Sometimes, gas stations adjust their pricing based on competition or other factors.

All that comes to mind is Senate Bill 478, which bans credit card surcharges at most businesses including gas stations. That was enacted in July 2024 though, so if you’ve only just started seeing this change then I’m not sure.

Some add .10 for credit and debit. Some add .10 for credit but not for debit. Some have all the same as cash.

Or, they could have signage that alternates the pricing. When you first see it, there will be three cash prices. Then, if you wait 20-30secs, the prices will change to credit/debit. Then they’ll switch back again. You probably didn’t notice if you just drove past.
