Generic pizza with no frills (i.e. Margherita) is better than pizzas with lots of toppings.

Margherita allows you to immerse way more into the taste of the base and whatever sauce you have. If I wanted a meat taste or a vegetable taste I’d make myself a sandwich.

    Not unpopular.

  3. orneryasshole Avatar

I want to taste peperoni on my pizza, not just the base.

  4. skronk61 Avatar

I agree OP. It takes a great chef to get toppings right. Most people don’t have the skill for it

  5. ownworldman Avatar

When talking about good pizza, margharita is the best.
In bad or average pizzeria, more toppings is better for the sandwich effect.

Nothing sadder than ordering margarita to realize sugo tastes like a cheap bought one.

  6. GrandmaForPresident Avatar

Bro, basil is a vegetable l

  7. Bilbo_Baghands Avatar

I don’t think this is “unpopular” at all.

  8. sonny_goliath Avatar

Bad pizza (Pizza Hut etc) needs toppings to make up for not great crust/sauce. But quality pizza should be able to be crust and sauce only and be good

  9. xstrawb3rryxx Avatar

    Marinara.

    Cheese doesn’t belong on pizza.

  10. BensOnTheRadio Avatar

A great plain slice of pizza is one of the great pleasures in life, and what I use as the metric for how good a place is. If your plain pizza is good, I’m willing to try your other varieties. If it’s bad, I’m never going back.

  11. bllueace Avatar

If it doesn’t have min 5 toppings it’s not a pizza and I don’t want it. It’s just bread with a bit of cheese and sauce

  12. ace1oak Avatar

yeah this depends on the pizzeria, i like both, sometimes i want that all meat stuff crust pizza with ranch, but a nice marg or diavola, i could eat every day

  13. French_O_Matic Avatar

Margherita is how you judge a pizzeria. Do they have the basics tuned in ? If not, why would they be able to succeed in more complex pizzas ?

  14. somedude1912 Avatar

Pizza is best with three toppings. Sausage or pepperoni, not both. Together is too much grease.

  15. Flutterpiewow Avatar

The best one is quattro formaggi, kinda like margharita but more

  16. mauore11 Avatar

I agree. Thin crust, fresh tomato, basil, cheese, olive oil is hard to beat

  17. shthappens03250322 Avatar

I would rather have meat bread. Give me a thin layer of sauce and lots of cheese and every meat you can imagine.

  18. dreamerinthesky Avatar

I appreciate a fresh Margherita. I love the basil, mozzarella and tomato. They all go so well together.

  19. MrShaytoon Avatar

This is 1000000% accurate. It shouldn’t be an unpopular opinion bc it’s legitimately true.

I used to own a pizza shop for a few years. The basic pizzas always tasted the best bc you could savor every ingredient. The more toppings on the pizza just killed the taste and flavor. It’s like here’s a salad, you’re just eating veggies or more grossly here’s every meat, sometimes both.

  20. PhilosophyBitter7875 Avatar

A plain cheese slice, a white slice and a margherita slice should all be on point at a pizzeria before you try any of the heavily modified slices. And if you are buying a pie just keep it simple, nobody wants a baked ziti pie, you only buy that as a slice.

  21. goregrindgirl Avatar

I wouldn’t say that Margherita is my favorite type of pizza (and I do like one or two toppings on my pizza) but I do think when toppings are overdone it makes a pizza taste worse, not better. A lot of pizza places think the more cheese and meat they put on it, the better it will be. But at some point, it just becomes a massive pile of meat. I want to be able to actually taste the sauce, base, and cheese as well.

  22. TheOneThatWon2 Avatar

Somewhat agree. I’ve always been of the opinion that a pizza is best with 2-3 at most toppings with some kind of proper vision for the flavor. Things like supreme and meatloaves go a bit to overboard and loose the plot

  23. 1BenWolf Avatar

Would you make me a sandwich?

  24. dogfacedponyboy Avatar

I don’t think that is a very unpopular. I much prefer simple pizzas. I always get a plain cheese pizza (either mozzarella or just grated Parmesan cheese), and then maybe another pizza with at most one topping. Maybe pepperoni, bacon, olives, or mushrooms.

  25. YourAverageEccentric Avatar

Depends on the pizza place and time. Going to the artisan place with a simple menu with an emphasis on good ingredients? Margherita will be a solid choice. Night time drunken pizza from that place that’s more about being open late into the night than about culinary experiences? Margherita will probably be a disappointment.

  26. Constant_Try_8167 Avatar

Agreed. This is the only pizza I usually eat.

  27. fieldsofanfieldroad Avatar

Sandwiches are better with just butter and cheese. Allows you to really appreciate the quality of the bread. If I wanted a meat taste, I’d make myself a pizza.

  28. Bolognahole_Vers2 Avatar

Veggie Pizza is better than meat lovers.

  29. vadabungo Avatar

I may be misreading this, but a basic (generic) cheese pizza is not synonymous with margherita pizza. two different things, at least where im from.

  30. I_Springroll Avatar

    This shouldnt even be unpopular

The pizza holy trinity is dough sauce cheese… now i love pineapple and pepperoni but you dont mess with a sacred thing

  31. rattlestaway Avatar

Yeah I always order it like that, I don’t like dough to be soft, crunchy is better

  32. CrossDeSolo Avatar

Lately my wife has been on a soppressata with hot honey binge. I get why, way more umami, but pizza to me is a margherita pizza no toppings. Simple man

  33. weebitofaban Avatar

No, but it is telling if your pizza place can’t even get the most basic shit correct.

  34. ButterscotchPast4812 Avatar

Yes I agree with this 100%!

  35. paintingdusk13 Avatar

This is not an unpopular opinion

  36. Stinkcatfartcano Avatar

I kinda agree. I love a good well made margh. Or a big slice of pepperoni pizza. Flavours stay distilled and pure. I don’t hate more toppings but I do hate pizzas that mistake quantity of toppings for good.

  37. JuggaliciousMemes Avatar

    Pineapple enters the chat….

  38. alphaphiz Avatar

A margarita is tequila, triple sec and lime juice so WTF is on margarita pizza.

  39. GremioIsDead Avatar

    Well, you’re certainly wrong…

  40. FunOptimal7980 Avatar

I think the issue is that the margherita needs to be really good for that to be true. Otherwise toppings are better because they mask the taste of mid sauce or cheese.

  41. Responsible-Sail954 Avatar

Sure, but I want meat or something.

I’ve had plain pizza for the first 15 years of my life, I’m over it.

    Is better? Subjective.

  42. PizzaBootyGuy Avatar

Agreed. I also don’t feel like absolute crud after eating a Margherita as opposed to most pizzas. It feels so guilt free.

  43. BoltsGuy02 Avatar

I like both, pizza is good

  44. SWiftie_FOR_EverMorE Avatar

Completely agree with the exception of sweetcorn. I think that on occasion one maybe two topping can enhance the pizza but too many spoils it.

  45. DiamondTough7671 Avatar

You sure you’d want the meat and veg distracting from the bread and mayo taste in the sandwich you’re having instead?

  46. Ok-Drink-1328 Avatar

    i don’t understand these “humble bragging” takes…. a sandwich?… to enjoy toppings?… really?

  47. LutschiPutschi Avatar

Oh yes, Margherita is my favorite too. I really like the dough-sauce-cheese ratio here.
Of course, I have also eaten pizzas with more toppings. Eating with your hands is almost impossible, the dough bends under the load, half of it falls off… and there was rarely anything in the taste that completely amazed me.
