Every time this man is brought up people whine about Winds of Winter. Has he broken promises and deadlines? Sure. But he is 76 years old, and doesn’t have the capacity to write like he did when he was younger. If people were insulting your elderly grandpa and telling him to get to work, you’d be sick of it.
There is a double standard where people think that our elders should have to retake driver’s tests or not hold public office (both of which i agree with). Yet they still expect this overweight elderly man to put in the work of a young author.
He will likely never finish this series and his notes will be passed along to an author who can do the work. Let the man enjoy his last years in peace, comfortably, on a pile of cash. He’s done enough.

When he started writing it he was 61 though.
Maybe he should have got his finger out of his arse and written the damn book when he was only in his sixties then.
I don’t think asking an old aurther to write a book in ten years is really asking much.
Hasn’t he taken on multiple other projects since he started this book though?

His stated wishes are that no one finishes it for him. He’s also repeatedly made false promises about when he would finish it. Let’s face it—he wrote himself into a corner, got rich doing it, and now doesn’t really have any incentive to do the hard work of delivering on all his promises.
Mate, Stephen King was churning out about four books a year in his seventies. The dude’s just lazy
Look, he can do what he wants, but he should honestly be straight up about it. Either just be like “Hey, I’m burnt out and have no plans to finish the series” or “I’m having problems with how I want this to end, and I have no idea if or when I’ll finish this”.
I think most people have a problem with how he keeps claiming it’s coming and see no progress about it.
He said in 2015 he was going to be done by the end of the year
He was 45 when the first book came out. He is doing other projects and writing other books, not the ones people want. I don’t care if the book comes out. I’ve never read any of it or seen any of it. The point is, it wouldn’t be an issue if he didn’t stop writing to focus on a TV show of said books before the book series was out.
People who insist on defending Martin can be just as annoying as the people who insist on attacking him. He doesn’t need you to stand up for him.
If you’re not already mentally prepared for the Brandon Sanderson version of Winds of Winter and Dream of Spring, you’re a silly silly human being
