Good coffee can be experienced just as well with milk/cream sugar

r/

This is to all the coffee snobs who make a face when I put sugar in your coffee. You don’t need to experience bitterness to appreciate a good aroma. It does NOT make you less of a man to not like that bitter garbage you pretend to enjoy so much. I can tell between a good coffee and a bad coffee with milk and sugar

This is not unpopular. Most people do not drink black coffee.

  3. Ciprich Avatar

It’s not that deep bro. Do you always get offended this easy?

  4. Feral_doves Avatar

Milk brings out the flavour! It’s like when someone mixes paint and adds a little white so you can see the resulting color better.

  5. Simply_BT Avatar

“Someone enjoys something I do not… they MUST be faking it!”

  6. New_General3939 Avatar

It depends, if you’re really trying to experience the coffee and be able to tell what differentiates different coffees from each other and taste the subtle differences, I’d try it black first. But I like my coffee best with a dash of milk, so if I’m just trying to enjoy it, not “experience” it, I’ll drink it with milk.

  7. CofffeeeBean Avatar

I mean… it’s a preference? I drink coffee with milk no sugar but don’t really give af about how others like their coffee. If you are my guest, tell me what you like and I’ll prepare it for you.

  8. Keverman34 Avatar

The world is often a burning hellscape, I’m going to enjoy my flavored creamer

  9. starrypeachberry Avatar

It depends lol. Depending on the amount and type of milk and sugar it can mask the taste and quality of the coffee.

It definitely doesn’t make you less of a man though!

  10. Intelligent_Pop1173 Avatar

Some people actually do enjoy black coffee, but most people add something to it whether it’s creamer, milk, sugar, or sweetener. At least in every work environment I’ve been in. The creamer I used to put in the work fridge with my name on it would often be gone within two days by other obnoxious people who wouldn’t buy their own. So I don’t think this is unpopular.

I think at least milk is very often enjoyed with good coffee all over the world. Creamer I do use to mask the taste of bad or mediocre coffee.

  11. TactitcalPterodactyl Avatar

I used to think the same until I had fresh roasted (like 2-3 days old) coffee. The flavor and aroma is unbelievable, it’s so good black.

Most Coffee we buy in stores, even what we consider to be “good” coffee is 1+ month past roasting, and it loses like 70% of it’s flavor in that time.

  12. JohnTeaGuy Avatar

    >It does NOT make you less of a man to not like that bitter garbage you pretend to enjoy so much.

If you want to make your argument in good faith then dont call something someone else likes “garbage” and accuse them of “pretending” to enjoy it.

    >This is to all the coffee snobs who make a face when I put sugar in your coffee.

Well quit putting sugar in my fucking coffee.

  14. Commercial_Tough160 Avatar

I like a little bit of coffee in my cup of cream and sugar, mostly for colour and aroma. And if you don’t like it? Get yer own damn cup!

I also enjoy anchovies on pizza, so I’m no stranger to controversy.

  15. Impossible_Theme_148 Avatar

Good coffee can be experienced with milk and sugar

But dairy – mutes the flavour of the coffee

Sugar mutes the flavour of the coffee

So – if the coffee tastes nice, you are hiding that taste.

If you don’t think the coffee tastes nice by itself then muting the flavour and giving it more sweetness or dairy will improve it – but if you actually like the coffee I don’t see any advantage in taking away some of that flavour

  16. Pristine-Sun4877 Avatar

It’s not bitter if it’s not burnt. Creamer and sugar can’t make burnt coffee good.

I’ve learned to love black coffee because it was easiest. Creamer is not always available or safe to drink. I could never get a good ratio so I learned to love black. It’s like a punch in the face that you need when you are at the end of your rope and exhausted at work.

  17. Pillonious_Punk Avatar

    Cream with Coffee is unpopular????

  18. Own_Shine_5855 Avatar

I guess my wife is a man…. She’s the one that kept calling me a sissy for drinking coffee with sugar / cream. Dropped the sugar and did cream….was still a sissy.

Now a black coffee drinker for the last 5 years. If someone puts any sugar in my coffee it’s not drinkable to me anymore.

You 1000% can change your preferences.

  19. Satanic_Impulse69 Avatar

that’s like diluting your whiskey with coke and then acting like you can taste the difference

  20. Naive-Benefit-5154 Avatar

So here’s my take. I like Vietnamese coffee. The condensed milk and sugar will not take away from the bitterness so you have a bittersweet drink which I love.

Many coffee drinks you end up not tasting the coffee as the sweetness drowns out any coffee flavor that was there.

  21. VFiddly Avatar

    >This is to all the coffee snobs who make a face when I put sugar in your coffee.

    What, lol?

That’s not snobbery, people just have preferences and it’s fucking weird to put sugar in someone else’s coffee without asking if they want it.

  22. KingHashBrown420 Avatar

I would say about 90% of the people that I serve coffee, have it with milk

  23. Appropriate_Army_780 Avatar

Water can be experienced in soda drinks. That does not mean its the same.

  24. SJ_Barbarian Avatar

“… when I put sugar in YOUR coffee.” [emphasis mine]

You can do what you want with your own coffee, but you don’t get to decide what I want or like. I drink black coffee because I like it.

  25. alley_kat95 Avatar

I like mine with sugar but no milk and I feel like it actually enhances the flavor even more. Kind of like how adding salt to a dish brings the flavor out. Really I don’t know why people are so judgy when it comes to coffee. My mom drinks hers black, my boyfriend likes to load his up with sugary flavored creamers. And it’s like who cares? Let’s all caffeinate in peace!

  26. Ok-Car-5115 Avatar

Not sure this is actually an unpopular opinion. I’m a coffee connoisseur and I don’t give a mangy rats backside what people put in their coffee.

  27. Ok_Wing8442 Avatar

Yes, in fact if you something really nice you can leave out the coffee

  28. MatJosher Avatar

I had a waitress lecture me when I added sugar to an espresso. As if she was going to faint onto ground over the insult.

In reality it was just standard, commercial coffee that was stale and very skunky. It could have easily been from an old motel. People are silly and want to flex sophisticated culinary on you. Whatever.

  29. funnytoenail Avatar

As one of these coffee snobs you’re trying to address – Good/great, well prepared coffee coffee isn’t bitter.

And while I enjoy a good black pour over (v60), espresso and americano, I also enjoy a nice flat white or cortado.

  30. Student-bored8 Avatar

I thought most people didn’t drink coffee black?

  31. QuantumDorito Avatar

You’re just having cheap coffee tho

  32. DaisyCutter312 Avatar

If you want a coffee-flavored milkshake every morning, you’re welcome to drink it, just like I’m welcome to my opinion on your choices. Neither one of us needs to change what we’re doing here.

  33. Bilbo_Baghands Avatar

I’ll agree that you can put cream and sugar in coffee and make a great tasting drink. But I’ll argue that you’re not experiencing “the coffee” just as well since you’ve masked it with the cream and sugar and are unable to experience the coffee portion of the drink the same.

Throw some bourbon in a drink that has 2 different juices, simple sugar, and another liquor and tell me you’re experiencing the bourbon just the same as someone drinking it neat. You’re experiencing something else completely.

  34. DaysyFields Avatar

I’ve not had sugar in tea or coffee since I was about twelve and adding it doesn’t make the drink sweet, it just tastes horrible.

  35. Fluffydress Avatar

I would never be mean to you if you put sugar in my coffee, but I would ask you to redo it, because for some reason the sugar and coffee don’t blend well and I end up feeling nauseous.

  36. CrustyT-shirt Avatar

I love espresso but i also love cappuccino and I also love Irish coffee. Just drink what you want. I don’t enjoy the pumpkin spice and whatever but, that’s just because I don’t really like things that are too sweet. Bottom line is, you do you and fuck elitism.

  37. Bilbo_Baghands Avatar

Who thinks it makes someone less of a man? Sounds like you’re reading too much into things and have some issues. I’m guessing you want to like black coffee for some reason, but it wasn’t for you. So now you’re making fun of it.

  38. Rusty_Trigger Avatar

I do believe that the initial reaction everyone had when drinking their first cup of black coffee was that it tasted terrible. Just like alcohol, you had to force yourself to drink enough before you acquired a taste for it. The first time I drank coffee was when it was more than half milk with tons of sugar (basically warm coffee ice cream) and it tasted great!

  39. ImonZurr Avatar

I agree! I tend to say, “If you need to put stuff in it, then it’s not good coffee,”

However! Sugar/milk/cream/brown sugar/maple syrup all really do enhance the great taste and aromas

  40. Ahhmyface Avatar

I mean, idgaf what bullshit you believe, but if you think black coffee is just de defacto bitter then you really don’t know shit about coffee and probably aren’t informed enough to justify your opinion.

Lots of different flavor profiles. Some sweet, some nutty, some spiced. Probably not the best idea to drink Starbucks xxx dark burnt crisps black if you don’t like bitter, but that’s your call I guess.

  41. FamousLastWords666 Avatar

    High quality coffee isn’t bitter

  42. ejbalington Avatar

Have you ever tried drinking black coffee with something sweet like a donut? The bitterness compliments the sweetness. Also good coffee tastes pretty good black. I think black coffee is an acquired taste like beer.

  43. snyderman3000 Avatar

Fellas, is it unpopular to take cream and sugar with your coffee???

  44. Expert-Examination86 Avatar

“You like your coffee different to me – you’re lying about how you like your coffee”

Not unpopular, just stupid and wrong.

  45. TheCount00 Avatar

I agree. Have coffee however you enjoy it. But for the people who enjoy cream and sugar don’t complain when it’s made “too strong”. You can add hot water, milke, cream, sugar, whatever and dial down the flavour, but you can make coffee full flavoured again.

  46. pplatt69 Avatar

I ran bookstores with cafes in them.

Most people drink their coffee with milk or cream. The overwhelming majority.

    So… unpopular opinion?

  47. Problematic_Owl Avatar

Firstly, if your coffee is bitter you either buy bad coffee or you don’t know how to make it properly.

Secondly, as someone who enjoys both options, both milk and sugar masks the taste of coffee itself – it’s still good and yes, quality of coffee makes difference here as well, but I noticed I tend to opt for black coffee if the coffee I bought is good, to sugar and milk if it’s not that good.

Take from that what you will I suppose.

You calling people snobs and then saying they are “pretending” to like something you dislike just because you dislike it and calling it garbage actually makes you same as them, which is quite ironic.

Oh and just in case, if “creamer” refers here in comments to that dried powdered shit and not actual milk or cream, for love of God people, read up on the ingredients in that stuff. Drinking that on a daily is not good for you.

  48. Boris-_-Badenov Avatar

    good coffee doesn’t exist.

it tastes bad, and black coffee brewing has a horrible stench.

  49. floppy_breasteses Avatar

Of course it can. It’s the same as putting condiments on a good burger.

  50. GoldenTheKitsune Avatar

I don’t care, I rarely drink coffee. If it’s a nice cappuccino, I don’t add anything. If it’s a bad bitter cappuccino, I use the given sugar. Whatever, I am not coffee police
