Has social media done more to connect people or isolate them?

I am curious about this.

I think initially, like in the days of Bebo etc, it brought people together, niche interests found their people and it certainly allowed people to express their individuality.

But it’s morphed a lot from that because those with extreme views also found their people, and social media became echo chambers. On top of that it became very much targeted by bots and people pushing agendas. It now pretty much exists to cause social divide, and while the niche groups of like-minded people exist, overall it’s a source of isolation and division.

it has affected people differently, obviously. I am very open and relaxed with people and I used to have a lot of friends who just like me where from other parts of the world, and later got scattered all around again. Social media has helped me stay in touch with them, but also reconnect with people in my home country (former band mates, high school friends, etc). I have also used social media to promote different projects, like art exhibitions or small gigs. As I prefer meeting in-person when possible I have been preserved from looking for love, friendship or social contact online. I understand that people who are more recluse or introvert might be more tempted (hence the success of influencers who profit from loneliness)

Capitalism works by isolating people, so social media in the service of capitalism will isolate people.

Definitely isolate. Communication between people these days is terrible.
