I took a paycut 10yr ago to work at a CCRC with old people. I loved it. Only managed one year and had to get a better paying job

Yes, it makes more money too. I went from working with kids to being self employed in the trades. Post covid parents became really hard to deal with and my job changed and just wasn’t as enjoyable. I switched to trades where I work for myself, work with my hands and can listen to podcasts all day.

I stopped worrying about getting a college degree and work is the service industry. I’m happy with my decision

I didn’t take an “easier” job per se. I found a different job that provided greater flexibility and much, much less stress. The icing on the cake is that I make 30k more a year.

My last job was stressful because I was a manager and worked under terrible management myself. Lack of support, etc. – it was a domino effect. In my new role, no one reports to me. I realized climbing the latter isn’t all it’s cracked out to be, and I took a job that allows me to clock in, do my job, and shut the laptop at 5.

I also refuse to ever put work email on my personal phone again. If it ever becomes an issue, my employer can pay for a separate phone.

New opportunities allow you to reset boundaries.

Instead of going into the next hamster wheel (postdoc), after my PhD I took a job as data manager/steward and I provide support to scientists in the rat race of getting the next grant. Meanwhile I have a permanent contract and don’t deal with publish or perish.

I stopped working for jerks. I don’t care how prestigious the job is, it’s not worth it if you have other options (I do get we don’t always, had to suck it up at times too).
