Help me decide my life! US vs UK

r/

Hi all, hoping to gather some impartial opinions on a massive life/career decision coming up sooner than I’d hoped! So some background- I’m a US citizen on year 3 of my postdoc in the UK (contract up this summer) in ortho basic research. I’ve also got an expensive chronic illness that needs to be taken into account with all this decision making, which is currently well-managed thru the NHS. Basically I’ve got two main options on next step:

1) Current PI has agreed to extend my postdoc contract for another 12mos, with the hope that I’ll land one of the 2 career fellowships that I plan to apply for (received good scores on the last round but sadly was not funded). The PI is very supportive but the lab environment isn’t the best (interpersonal issues). I’ve had a few minor pubs and am about to receive a large chunk of data in the next weeks that should give me material for 1-2 good first authors. I really enjoy living in the UK, especially not having to worry paying for doctor visits/meds, love not having to maintain a car, and enjoy proximity to London/Europe. Of course I also am happy to not be in the crosshairs of the current US political admin.

2) My PhD mentor, who I worked with prior to my PhD and throughout & with whom I have an excellent working relationship, has offered a research assistant professor position in the relatively low CoL area where I grew up in a blue state. The lab/department was one of the best places I’ve ever worked, I love the city and also have friends and family nearby. If the election had gone differently this would be a no brainer pick for me, but now I’m super concerned about potential NIH cuts (which fund pretty much all the research I’d be doing) and the general anti-science climate. It’s exciting that this would be a promotion, but if things go south in the US I’d be screwed and also competing with all the other US scientists trying to leave, whereas I’m only 2 years away from ILR in the UK (timer would reset if I ever moved back here).

I’d really like to stay in academia, but I do have previous experience in industry if it came down to it. There also might be some flexibility with start date for this new position, which could help me wrap things up here.. but who knows what the political climate will be like then? Essentially I need to be able to predict the future and hoping some of you have insight! Really appreciate everyone who made it this far & tia for any feedback.

I would go for #2, only concern is NIH funding, is the position soft money?
