This Mom Blasted Her Neighbor for Complaining About Her Pumping Alarm and the Internet is Completely on Her Side

Having a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit is a level of stress most people cannot even begin to comprehend. You are living in a constant state of terror while completely exhausted. The absolute last thing you need during a medical crisis is a grumpy neighbor complaining about his beauty sleep. But one mother on Reddit recently found herself in exactly this nightmare scenario, and her mama bear response is going totally viral.

The Original Poster is currently navigating an incredibly scary reality. Her daughter was born over three months early and is still fighting in the NICU. The tiny baby has periods where she stops breathing, her oxygen saturation drops, and she literally turns bright blue. With no projection for when the baby gets to come home, the mother is completely terrified and feeling helpless.

There is very little a parent can do in this situation besides offer cuddles and supply breastmilk. To keep her baby fed, this exhausted mom is expressing milk for a minimum of 20 minutes on each side every two to three hours. This grueling schedule applies around the clock, including the middle of the night.

To make a horrific situation even worse, her neighborhood recently experienced a massive flea infestation. To eradicate the bugs from her home, she had to tear up all of her carpets and throw away her sofa and her mattress. She and her fiancé are currently sleeping on a blow up mattress directly on the floor. Without furniture or carpets to absorb sound, every little noise she makes carries straight down to the neighbor below.

The mother has a strict overnight pumping schedule set for 11:30 pm, 1 am, and 6:30 am. Setting alarms is the only way she can wake up to provide food for her sick child. But the downstairs neighbor decided he had suffered enough. He marched upstairs and brazenly knocked on her door to complain that her 1 am alarm was waking him up.

Instead of telling him to kick rocks immediately, the mother tried to be incredibly polite. She apologized and explained the biological science of breastfeeding. She told him that she cannot turn that specific alarm off because nighttime expression directly impacts her milk flow for the entire day. The immense stress of the situation has already caused her supply to drop from 100 ml down to roughly 50 ml. She already feels incredibly guilty about her dropping supply and literally cannot afford to miss a session.

She even offered a highly generous compromise. She told the neighbor she could set the alarm anywhere between 1 am and 3:30 am and let him pick the exact time that worked best for him. The neighbor completely rejected the offer. He demanded she just turn the alarm off entirely or wait until after 5 am to pump. He clearly has absolutely no idea that milk producing hormones actually peak between 1 am and 4 am.

When the neighbor doubled down and complained again about his sleep, the mother finally snapped. She fiercely told him that her premature daughter needs her milk and she will do absolutely everything to make sure the baby is fed. She flat out told the man that her baby is her priority, not his sleep, and slammed the door right in his face. It was a perfectly executed boundary.

In a bizarre twist, the mother confided in a friend who actually called her an a**hole. The friend tried to claim that skipping one single expression would not hurt anything, completely invalidating the mother’s intense struggle to maintain her dropping supply. Unsurprisingly, that friend has absolutely no idea what she is talking about. Middle of the night pumping is undeniably the most crucial time for maintaining lactation.

The Reddit comment section wasted zero time declaring this mother completely not the a**hole. She is dealing with a premature baby in the hospital, sleeping on a deflated air mattress, fighting off fleas, and sobbing over a dropping milk supply. The absolute last thing she needs to worry about is a grown man whining about a phone alarm. The neighbor needs to log onto the internet, order a heavy duty white noise machine, and leave this poor woman alone.
